Second Life Spotlight - Emery Milneaux
https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/second-life-spotlight-emery-milneaux-r11206/

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Emery Milneaux, co-founder of The Arcade, a landmark shopping event in Second Life. With the return of gacha, The Arcade is making a highly anticipated comeback, reimagined with care and creative spirit.

How long have you been in Second Life and how did you first hear about it?
I joined in 2007. I was watching Gossip Girl and saw a promo for a virtual Upper East Side. It was part of a tie-in experience with Linden Lab where you could enter the show’s universe and mingle with the “social elite.” When I followed the link, it had me install Second Life. I logged in through the Gossip Girl portal, but I didn’t stay there very long. I wandered out and started exploring the rest of SL pretty quickly. (If you’re wondering though, I’m definitely a Blair.)

What inspired you to become a creator and event organizer in Second Life?
It started pretty organically. I had built a coffee shop in SL, and when it started getting traffic, I added a small gift shop. I didn’t know how to model, so I used full perm kits and combined them into something that felt original. That was my very humble entry point into content creation.

Around that time, I met Octagons Yazimoto in-world. We became fast friends, and to this day she’s one of my best — in Second Life and in real life. One random day, she sent me a blind TP (no message attached). That was normal for us, so I accepted. But when I landed, she was buzzing about an idea she had for a gacha event. She asked if I’d help with the graphics and branding, as that’s where my experience lies in real life. I adore Octagons, so I was happy to jump in and help. Within a few days, I was a co-owner. It all moved very quickly.

After The Arcade became a realized idea, I started taking my own brand (Commoner) more seriously. I taught myself how to model so I could stop relying on kits and start making original mesh. Katharine McGinnis, another original owner of The Arcade, helped me through that process. She was instrumental in teaching me my way around Blender.

Shifting from kits to custom mesh was a turning point. It was empowering to finally make exactly what I wanted instead of relying on whatever was available on Marketplace. That changed everything.

Shortly after the gacha ban, I closed Commoner because The Arcade needed my full attention. But it’s a year of reboots and I do love a comeback, so… Who knows? Anyone down for a game of Chatterbox?

You are one of the founders of The Arcade Gacha Events, one of the most well-known shopping events in SL. Can you tell us about how and when The Arcade first began?
The Arcade launched in 2012. At the time, gacha events were starting to appear in SL, but none of them had a fully fleshed-out identity. We didn’t just want to create a gacha event. We wanted to create a universe, and we wanted to create it before anyone else could.

I think you’d be pressed to name another event in Second Life with its own theme song and a beloved mascot. That kind of stuff isn’t implemented by accident. It takes a lot of thought and intention. Everything from the layout of the venue to the tone of our announcements is part of a larger story we’re telling. People might throw around the word "greedy" when they talk about gacha, and I’ve heard it more than once over the years. But you can’t build something like The Arcade without caring a lot about how it makes people feel.

It was never just about machine pulls. It was about creating something memorable. Something that lingered.

Thirteen years later, despite wild ups and downs, here we are.

Who are the other people involved in running The Arcade, and what are their roles? How has your team evolved over the years?
Alby Yeetly is a newer addition to the team. He’s helping with Creative and Social Relations, making sure we’re inviting the best possible creators and bloggers, and that we’re showing up the right way on social media. He has an incredible eye for talent and quality, and he’s brought a lot of fresh perspective to the event.

We also have JasmineStardust and Diana Winchester, who assist Jules and our creators during setup. They’re the first line of support when anyone needs help on-site, and they keep everything moving behind the scenes.

It’s a small team, but a strong one. Everyone involved genuinely cares about the event, and that’s what makes it work.

The Arcade is making a big comeback this July, what changes can we expect?
There’s been a lot of polishing since the last time you saw us. But the heart of the event is the same, and that’s what we’re most excited to share with everyone again. No more workarounds, no more experiences to accept or HUDs to attach - Just pure gacha play. Our goal has always been to surprise people with things that already feel familiar. That mix of nostalgia and discovery is what made The Arcade exciting in the first place.

Behind the scenes, we spent a lot of time talking with creators. Not just about the format or the rules, but about the bigger picture. We knew there was hesitation after the ban, especially with the back-and-forth that followed. We wanted our roster to feel strong, but more importantly, we wanted people to feel confident that gacha was really back. This wasn’t a quick decision from Linden Lab. These conversations have been happening for months.

We wanted to come back with intention, and with the right people on board. But before we could make any of those moves, gacha needed to be fully restored.

What are some of your favorite past memories or standout moments from The Arcade's history?
When The Arcade first opened, it was hosted on a community estate of eleven sims. We had closed off the main sim before launch, but minutes before opening, all the surrounding sims started filling up with avatars. Residents of the estate couldn’t even get to their home parcels because the entire region was packed with people trying to get a sneak peek or find a way in early. It was chaos, but it was also the first time we realized we had created something people were truly excited about.

Another early memory that still makes me laugh is how completely unprepared we were for yard sales. The idea of people reselling and trading rares hadn’t even crossed our minds. Suddenly our user group was exploding, and we were scrambling to set up rules, moderators, and some kind of structure to manage it all. Now it feels like a given, but back then, we were totally thrown.

These moments kind of defined what The Arcade became. Something bigger than we expected, with a life of its own.

How do you think shopping events like The Arcade have influenced virtual fashion, design, and community engagement in Second Life over the years?
The Arcade changed the way people approached shopping in SL. It made presentation matter. Creators started designing with more cohesion and collectability in mind. Shoppers became collectors. And there was a real sense of community around it. Trades, wishlists, shared hauls. It gave people something to talk about (for better or worse

It also made something else clear. People saw for the first time that event coordination could actually be a viable job in SL. That part has always made some people uncomfortable, but I think the saturation of events over the years shows how much that mindset has shifted. Once The Arcade entered the mainstream, it became obvious that events had value, and that organizers could be compensated for their time and vision.
That said, it also became more important to look at motivation. Not every event is built with intention. Some are just revenue streams. And while I won’t criticize anyone for trying to make something work, I do think people can tell when an event has a point of view versus when it’s just trying to cash in.

What made The Arcade different is that it was never just about filling vendor spots. It was about creating something worth showing up for. And we’re grateful to have that opportunity again.

AI Character Designer Update
https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/ai-character-designer-update-r11208/

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone in our community who explored, tested, and helped shape the AI Character Designer during its experimental implementation in Second Life. Your feedback, creativity, and passion brought these virtual personalities to life in ways we could only imagine when this journey began.

As part of our commitment to ongoing innovation and responsible iteration, we are announcing a pause in the Character Designer experiment. Starting Sept. 1, the Character Designer feature will be turned off and no longer available.

Why We're Pausing Now

The Character Designer was launched as an experimental feature to explore the potential of AI-powered characters in Second Life. Built in collaboration with our AI technology partner Convai, this tool enabled residents to create interactive, virtual characters with conversational capabilities.

From elaborate roleplay scenarios to immersive visitor greeters, your projects and feedback have been invaluable. This pause gives us time to carefully evaluate everything we’ve learned and determine how best to evolve this technology in a way that aligns with the broader future of Second Life.

This is not the end of AI in Second Life; rather, it is a thoughtful pause as we refine our strategy and continue exploring new opportunities for innovation.

What to Expect

Here’s what you need to know about the transition:

End Date: Sept. 1, 2025

After This Date: You will no longer be able to create, deploy, or run AI Characters using the Character Designer interface.

Existing Characters: Characters created through the Designer will no longer function or appear inworld after this date.

User Data: Previously created characters and their memory will not be retained post-pause.

Support: We’ve opened a dedicated forum thread and will be actively monitoring the Second Life experimental characters channel on our Discord server for your questions and feedback.

If you’re currently developing a character or planning a showcase, we encourage you to wrap up any inworld usage prior to the sunset date.

A Continued Commitment to AI Innovation

We also want to take a moment to recognize and thank our partner Convai for their outstanding work and dedication throughout this project. Their technology and creative energy were instrumental in shaping the foundation of the Character Designer, and we’re excited to continue collaborating with them on future AI initiatives.

Let’s Keep Building Together

To everyone who built a character, roleplayed with one, or provided feedback: thank you. Your participation helps guide how we bring emerging technologies into Second Life in meaningful, immersive, and community-centered ways.
We can’t wait to share what’s next.

AI Character Designer – FAQ

Effective: July 31, 2025
End Date: Sept. 1, 2025

GENERAL QUESTIONS

Why is the Character Designer being paused?
The Character Designer was launched as an early-stage experimental tool to explore the role of AI-driven characters in Second Life. After several months of community testing and feedback, we are pausing this experiment to evaluate next steps and refine our long-term AI strategy. This is not the end of AI features in Second Life—we're using this moment to regroup and plan for future development.

When exactly will the tool stop working?
The AI Character Designer will be turned off on Sept. 1, 2025. After this date:

You will no longer be able to access the Character Designer dashboard

AI characters created using the tool will no longer function inworld

CHARACTER MANAGEMENT

Will I be able to keep or download my character data?
No. Once the pause occurs, character profiles and memory data stored through the Character Designer will be deleted and cannot be recovered or downloaded.

What will happen to my character’s memory and persona?
Long-term memory and personality data are not transferable. The information tied to your characters will be permanently removed when the system shuts down.

Can I still log in using my alt account after the pause?
Yes. The alt accounts you used for characters remain valid Second Life accounts. You may continue using them manually just like any other alt.

COMMUNITY & SUPPORT

Where can I ask questions or report concerns about this pause?
We’ve opened multiple channels for community engagement:

Forum Thread – Ongoing Q&A and feedback

Second Life Discord – Real-time responses from staff and developers

Support Portal – For any account-specific issues

Will Convai still be involved in Second Life?
Yes! Convai remains an active and valued partner.

Can I still show off my character or project before the pause?
Absolutely. We encourage creators to take screenshots, videos, or host public showcases during the 30-day wind-down period. Feel free to share your work in the forum thread or on Discord.

THE FUTURE OF AI IN SECOND LIFE

Are other AI features coming?
Yes. We are actively and cautiously experimenting with other AI technologies to enhance Second Life’s creative potential, performance, and immersion. The insights from this project are already helping to inform future efforts.

New Release: 2025.05 - glTF Mesh Import
https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/new-release-202505-gltf-mesh-import-r11213/

🎉 New Features

Import glTF meshes straight into Second Life! This release adds simplified support for .glb and .gltf mesh uploads, making it easier than ever to bring complete assets from modern 3D pipelines directly into SL.

👉 Download the viewer here: https://secondlife.com/downloads

Last year, we introduced the ability to extract and upload PBR materials from glTF files: a helpful first step. Now, with glTF model upload, you can import creations more simply, streamlining your workflow from modern tools like Blender.

File types: .glb (recommended) and .gltf.

What to expect: Similar constraints to COLLADA upload (see "Mesh Constraints" below).

Materials: For this first release we don’t yet support a unified material upload in the mesh importer. You can still set up materials in-world after upload, or use just diffuse textures.

Quick Start: Blender → Second Life

Second Life Hand Eye Model by Paws Enthusiast

In Blender: File → Export → glTF 2.0 (.glb/.gltf).

Use .glb to pack textures.

Apply transforms and ensure your scale is correct before export.

In Second Life: Build → Upload → Mesh Model… and choose your .glb/.gltf.

Set LODs/physics as usual and finalize materials in-world.

Select a material upload path:

Diffuse Only: Check Upload Options → Include Textures

PBR: Upload and apply PBR materials separately using Build → Upload → Material

Because glTF is a widely used format, it’s also easier to bring appropriately licensed content from sites like sketchfab.com: export/download as glTF and follow the steps above.

Other Improvements

Frametime Metrics - We’ve improved frametime reporting by providing several new metrics so you can better understand smoothness, not just FPS. This helps creators profile scenes, attachments, and camera moves and quickly spot spikes.

Look for "jitter" and "frametime" in the Statistics Bar

Media Updates - Improved HUD media interaction via PRIM_MEDIA_FIRST_CLICK_INTERACT

Docs: https://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlGetPrimMediaParams

🐞 Bug Fixes (highlights)

Numerous stability fixes and crash reductions around new glTF paths.

Viewer polish across inventory, world map, Picks performance, image rendering, and PBR texture tools.

Thank you all for the thoughtful bug reports, testing and contributions! If you are interested in helping us build Second Life see our developer contribution guide here.

See the Release Notes for a full list of changes.

Known Issues

Joint overrides may not work for all glTF meshes.

Mesh Constraints

≤ 8 materials per sub-mesh
(Sub-meshes with more are split into additional meshes.)

≤ 65,535 vertices per sub-mesh
(Exceeding this will split the mesh.)

🤔Try it & Tell Us What You Think

We’re excited to see users work more simply with modern modeling pipelines. If you have questions, feel free to join our #content-features channel in Discord and provide feedback to us at https://feedback.secondlife.com.

See you in-world, and happy building!
https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/second-life-spotlight-barb-omgwtf-barbecue-r11214/

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Barb (OMGWTF Barbecue), the founder of Fifty Linden Fridays. For over 16 years, FLF has been a favorite shopping tradition in Second Life; meet the Resident who started it all!

How long have you been in Second Life, and how did you first hear about it?
19 years, 3 months. So crazy to see that written out! In 2006, I was pursuing a career in the arts as a printmaker, and had joined an online community called Art Dorks. Someone posted an article about SL and some of the seemingly bizarre things that go on there, so we all decided to sign up for a laugh, which is why I have such a non-serious name. I foolishly thought we’d just goof around for a couple of days and never log in again, yet here I am almost 20 years later. Guess I’m a fan!

You are the founder of Fifty Linden Fridays, one of the most popular and iconic shopping events in Second Life. How did the idea for it first come about, and how has it evolved over the years?
Way back in 2009 I had a clothing store called ‘This is a Fawn’ on the Starlust sim, and had made friends with a lot of the creators who had stores there like Pig, Schadenfreude, Tiny Bird, Clawtooth, katat0nik. The idea was born from brainstorming how I could increase traffic to my own mainstore by leveraging the customer bases of the stores of my peers, which would ultimately benefit us all. I thought if we all had a sale at the same time and everyone shared the list of LMs to their own groups, we could cross-pollinate and help each other out. I was lucky to have creators who were willing to try it out, and turns out it was successful.

Vintage photo of ‘This is a Fawn’ store

Over the years FLF has grown into something much bigger than just me, but I still try to keep the list each week somewhat small and curated, so that customers are able to go to all stores and hopefully discover something new. One of my favorite things in Second Life is discovering new stores, so I love having the ability to include some of the up-and-coming places I find in FLF so that customers can experience this joy as well.

FLF is currently celebrating its 16th birthday bash, can you tell us more about that?
Oh my gosh, it blows my mind to think that I’ve been doing Fifty Linden Fridays for 16 years. I am so grateful to the creators who show up every week, and (while I might be a little biased) I really do think that FLF has the best inworld group! The Bday Bash in August and FLF-o-Ween in October are fun seasonal events where creators can sell things, but also give gifts back to the FLF customers as a thank you for their continued support. It’s a big undertaking each year but it’s genuinely so fun to do and I know everyone really has fun with it, both creators and customers.

FLF Bday Bash running until September 5, 2025

In addition to FLF, you also run The Fifty. What inspired you to create this event, and how does it differ from FLF?
I wanted to try a monthly event as I hadn’t had the opportunity to do that before, so I came up with the concept of doing an event in a smaller format. Many monthly events have rosters of nearly 100 stores or more, and I thought it’s possible creators could be overlooked when there’s so much competition within the event itself. The Fifty was created to provide a slightly different take – we have 50 core/permanent designers, plus a rotating group of guest designers each month. I hope the format allows designers to shine a little more in each category, while also putting a spotlight on up-and-coming talent. I’ve also made it so our monthly rotation includes a more Men’s-focused round once every 3 months (next one is the September round!), as I know there are a lot of customers looking for male items and we want to make sure they know they can shop at The Fifty.

The Fifty Shopping Event
Nectarine is your personal brand for original mesh clothing, how would you describe your design style, and what inspires your creations?
To be a little goofy for a moment, I’m somewhat of an SL nevernude, and always looking for clothing that feels current and trendy that doesn’t expose any of my pixel bits. Some of the things I was looking for I wasn’t able to find, so I thought I would start making them myself! I’ve been a Fashion Designer in RL for 20+ years, so I have tried to leverage my experience in design and merchandising and bring that to my brand in SL. I’ve recently brought Nectarine out of retirement and I’m back to creating again! I’m learning all kinds of new skills, so I’m excited to see where it takes me.

Nectarine Mainstore

Tell us about some of the other Residents in SL who inspire you and whose work you admire.
Oh there’s so many - I’ve had the pleasure of watching Anya Ohmai go from creating sculpties to now creating some of the most compelling, engaging and original mesh works in SL. I have immense respect for dazai Voom, for introducing the concept of gacha to the grid on his sim Cioccolata years ago, and for the unique style of his work at D-LAB. Masa Plympton creates work at such a high level of quality for Deadwool that I often show it to people who don’t even play SL because I’m just stunned by the beauty of it! The Vordun Museum is one of my favorite places in SL and I really value what Jake Vordun has brought to the grid through the museum.

Friends at the Vordun

And while Redd Columbia of RC Cluster isn’t in SL currently, her irreverent, hilarious sense of humor and just genuine creativity in her work inspires me on a daily basis.

The newest Second Life Viewer release is here, and this one is extra special because so many of its features come directly from community feedback. Thanks to the requests and contributions shared on GitHub and through our feedback portal, this update delivers improvements you’ve been asking for.

Highlights

🌟 Inventory Favorites

You can now favorite items --outfits, objects, textures-- in your inventory for quick access. This makes it easy to find, sort, and use items that you love most!

🛠️ New Tools & New Features

This release also includes a collection of smaller updates that add up to a better everyday experience:

Hide your L$ balance by simply double-clicking on it. This can be useful when streaming your viewer or recording machinima.

Switch between light and dark titlebar on Windows. The Second Life title bar will now match Windows' system theme, and a better looking, updated icon has been provided.

Zoom in to Self is now available in the nearby chat menu.

Improved privacy with updates to Selection Hint and LookAt target behavior. You can now opt to hide your LookAt hints for increased privacy. This has been a long-standing feature of Third Party Viewers which is now available in the official client.

Snapshots now include timestamps in their filename so that they can always sort in chronological order and don't interleave with existing screenshots.

Mesh Inspection Tools: Builders can now view a specific mesh Level of Detail (LoD) and see detailed information about it using some additions to the viewers' build tools.

Force a selected mesh to a specific LoD using Build → Options → Selection level of detail, then view its geometry details through the More Info link in the build floater.

✨ Other Changes & Fixes

Avatar System: Avatars behave more smoothly with fixes to spinning rotations, multiple attachments on the same point, and skeleton resets. We’ve also prevented profile and group images from being used incorrectly as bake textures

Camera and Movement: Mouselook feels better than ever with the return of a full 90-degree upward pitch range. Camera flipping issues have been addressed, and settings have clearer descriptions.

Chat & Voice Enhancements: The chat system is more reliable with fixes for empty conversation logs and improvements to the emoji picker. Voice chat also benefits from better region transitions, cleaner slider displays, and automatic reconnection when tuning.

Environment & Rendering: Managing personal environments is easier with clearer Apply button states, improved notifications, and safeguards against deleting Library presets. Visual fixes for water, property lines, and lighting information also improve the overall experience.

UI & Quality of Life:

Placeholder text in fields is now automatically selected when clicked.

Thumbnail previews load more clearly without blurriness.

Extra key handling issues have been fixed to prevent accidental actions.

Links to worn objects can now be deleted properly.

Stability & Performance: Dozens of crash fixes and backend improvements help make the Viewer more reliable and stable across platforms, with better handling on Apple Silicon systems (Native support coming soon)

Marketplace UI Overhaul
https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/marketplace-ui-overhaul-r11219/

We’re making some much-needed updates to the Second Life Marketplace. Our goal is to create a modern, unified experience that is more responsive and easier to use on any device. We’ve been working on the UI and UX, and these changes are rolling out across desktop, tablet, and mobile browsers.

Right now, the new responsive product, category, and search results pages are live, and we are still working on making the rest of the site responsive as well. You may have noticed that some other pages, including the Marketplace home page, have been updated with some of the new elements, but are not yet fully responsive. We are still in an awkward in-between phase as we work to unify the presentation of all the pages on the site.

We’ve heard your feedback, and we’ve already fixed the blurry images that were appearing on search and category pages. We’re continuing to iterate on the remaining issues as well as proceeding with additional updates.

Addressing feedback

We want to address some specific feedback we've received regarding the new design:

Image Zoom: The new design uses the highest resolution product image available on the product page itself instead of a separate modal display like before. These images are presented at 100% scale, or at the largest size that the screen displaying it will permit. We understand that a dedicated zoom feature is a common request, and we are evaluating how this might work with the new design.

Page Gutters: The new design makes the "gutters" on the sides of the page only appear on wider screen sizes. This is a standard practice in modern web design, helping to create a cleaner and more organized look. Currently, the marketplace has dark gutters on every page; however, some pages are not yet fully responsive, which can make the dark gutters appear larger than appropriate. We are updating pages one by one to be fully responsive, so the dark gutters will dynamically resize in a way that makes sense for whatever device you're using to view the marketplace.

Additional feedback, like showing item counts for sub-categories, increasing the number of characters shown in an item name, and making the Marketplace home page fully responsive are all also on our radar and we hope to address them as soon as possible.

For the latest updates on when your feedback is being addressed, visit our feedback portal.

We're Listening

We are committed to shipping small, regular updates. Sometimes this means we may roll out a feature that isn't up to our quality standards. We are aware of these issues and are working to fix them as quickly as we can. We appreciate your feedback; it helps us identify and fix issues quickly.

We are working hard to make these updates and keep everything else running smoothly, and will share more as we make progress.

We also know that there are lots of changes and improvements to the functionality of the marketplace that you would like to see. We are planning work on those as well, and look forward to sharing them with you.
