Browser-Based Access to Second Life: Limited Testing Begins Today

Starting today, Second Life residents can help us test access to Second Life directly through the browser, with no download or GPU required. Initial testing will use the standard viewer UI, but in the next phase of work we will dramatically simplify the user interface, with the overall goal of greatly improving the accessibility of Second Life for a larger audience.
How to Participate:
New Residents: Beginning next week, a fraction of new registrants will be randomly selected to experience their first Second Life session through their browser during the sign-up process.
Existing Residents: You can try the new browser-based experience for yourself by visiting zero.secondlife.com. During our test phase, the web version of Second Life is not meant to serve as a replacement for your desktop Viewer or mobile app. We are still in early experimental development of this project, so please note that capacity is limited, and wait times may occur. Session durations will be time-restricted during this phase.
Important Notes for Current Residents:
No Changes to Existing Viewers: The downloadable Second Life Viewer and popular Third-Party Viewers (like Firestorm) will continue to be fully supported. This browser-based initiative is an addition to existing platforms, not a replacement.
Testing in Progress: While we encourage you to explore the browser-based version, we kindly ask that you avoid creating new accounts just to access this feature, as this may skew our testing data.
Known Issues: For the initial release of this browser-based Viewer, you cannot upload files, voice chat is not yet enabled, and chat history and preferences are not stored across sessions. However, we do plan to address some of these limitations in future updates.
Give Feedback: Your feedback will help us in the design process. For this first phase, we are most interested in finding any failure cases where you are unable to connect at all.

Our internal name for this initiative is ‘Project Zero’, because our goal is to reduce to zero the barriers to getting into Second Life: the system requirements, the possibility of not being able to install or crashing, and the many barriers present to getting accustomed to the interface.
Roadmap
To make Second Life accessible to a larger audience, we will begin by using cloud-based servers to render the world, adding a simplified, modern UI built from web components. We will start with basic UI elements like chat and navigation, using design patterns similar to those we are using in the mobile client. Then, working closely with Second Life content developers, we will re-write the most difficult components, such as HUDs and editing your avatar. The final experience will be a dramatically simpler and more accessible UX, without reducing the full richness of experiencing the world. Server-side rendering and streaming means we can increase frame rates without reducing graphic quality, while reducing and ultimately eliminating crashing and other bugs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Wasn’t streaming tried in the past?
Yes, a couple of times. However, the price/performance for the underlying streaming technology and service has changed greatly in the last couple years – partially because of the rise of AI and GPUs in the cloud. It is now possible to stream pixel-perfect 1080p with no detectable lag. As part of this experiment, we will be closely monitoring operational costs in relation to its positive impact on growth and retention for return on investment.

Anyone who can watch Netflix can use Second Life in the browser. And, as mentioned above, you can still access Second Life from the official or third party viewers.
Will it work on mobile?
No. This project is designed for laptop and desktop access, but without the need for a download, fast CPU, or graphics card. The streaming technology might be adapted for future mobile use, but not right now. The SL Mobile Client is available on iOS and Google Play stores.
What about shopping?
In the first phase, there will be no changes to the shopping experience in Second Life. As we complete the second phase of UX changes, we will include avatar dressing, HUDs, and shopping, working closely with SL content developers.
What about avatar customization?

Tilia Wallet Integration: US Dollar Balances are securely managed through Tilia Wallets, providing a centralized, compliant, and reliable system for handling fiat currency.
User-Friendly Tools: Updates to the Second Life Marketplace, Cashier, and Account dashboards make it easier to interact with your account and manage payments.
Improved Payout Experience: Enhanced payout mechanisms, supported by Tilia, including faster and more payout options like direct bank deposit (coming soon).
Robust Security and Compliance: Tilia, a regulated financial institution, ensures secure payment processing, detailed transaction tracking, and alignment with regulatory standards.

Account History
Your Account History page will also change to split out the positive or negative Balance Due value into these two positive values for US Dollar Balance and Balance Due. Both values can move depending on the transaction being recorded, so there may be some getting used to this layout. We plan to make improvements to this page soon.

There will be no changes to fees for existing services. New payout types and speeds that will be coming soon may have different fees based on the underlying costs involved with those payout methods.

All are offering their best to inspire your Valentine's fantasies from a romantic evening with your bae, to a party with your friends, and everything in between. You will definitely find something to suit you! Every store will have at least a 20% discount on all items and a free (non-group) gift for shoppers or a gift certificate valued at L$300 or above!
The event formally opens to the public on Friday, January 31st at 9am PT - but who wants to wait when you can get early access?! If you can’t contain your excitement, join the official Second Life Birthday group inworld to be granted immediate access.
Before you jump inworld, you can get a sneak peek at many of the items that will be available in the official Second Life Shop & Hop Flickr pool. And don’t forget to share photos of your haul after your shopping excursion!

The Isle of View, which opens on February 3rd, is our annual tribute to all things romantic via four regions filled with forested walks, cozy nooks for cuddling, and romantic swan boat rides.
Visit one of the Love Pavilion gift kiosks to browse through a variety of gift selections that you can send to your friends and loved ones on Valentine’s Day. The selection of gifts includes heart lollipops and balloons, an adorable teddy bear, a chocolate box with rings, cutesy cupcakes, love lanterns, and, of course, romantic roses. We even have a special Plushie you can have sent to your special Valentine or just get one for yourself! To select and send your free gifts, follow the directions on the sign adjacent to the kiosk. Or alternatively, click on the help buttons on the gift kiosks.
VALENTINE'S LOVE TRAIN
Our special Bellisseria Valentine's Event returns this year. "Love Train Trolleys" operated by our own LDPW Moles depart from the station on the Welcome Hub every few minutes on February 14th from 11:30am - 12:30pm PT. The 30 minute ride ends with a teleporter that will take residents directly to Dunk & Hug a Linden or Mole, but residents can hop on at any point as the trolleys go by!
DUNK & HUG A LINDEN OR MOLE EVENT
Are you feeling “some kind of way” about the Lindens or Moles? Show your love (or friendly aggression) for the makers of Second Life at our annual Dunk & Hug a Linden or Mole Event, held this year on February 14th from 1pm to 3pm PT at the Isle of View. Come early for some fun conversations and plenty of soaked Lindens!

2K BOM is LIVE! Let the Baking Begin!

Residents, the wait is over! We’re thrilled to announce that as of February 3rd, 2025, 2K Bakes on Mesh (BOM) is now officially live!
After an exciting round of testing on Aditi, where many of you helped us refine this feature (thank you, beta testers!), we’re now rolling it out to the main grid. That means higher-resolution baked textures are here to take your avatars to the next level!
What is 2K BOM?
If you missed the beta launch announcement, here’s the scoop: 2K BOM allows compatible textures to bake at up to 2048x2048 resolution, bringing sharper details, crisper clothing, and a whole new level of avatar customization. But don’t worry—this won’t send your GPU into a meltdown! BOM will always bake at the highest resolution available among your layers, meaning:
🔹 If all your layers are 512x512, your bake will stay at 512x512.
🔹 If you mix 512x512 and 1024x1024 layers, the bake will be 1024x1024.
🔹 If at least one layer is 2048x2048, your bake will be 2K!
And for those wondering—no, 2K BOM does not apply to your eyes. They’ll remain safely capped at 512x512 to keep things running smoothly.
What Does This Mean for You?
This upgrade means sharper, more detailed avatar textures—whether you’re rocking an intricate tattoo, finely embroidered fabric, or a hyper-detailed skin. Creators and fashionistas, rejoice! Your designs will now have even more depth and clarity.

Faster Payouts Are Here! Second Life Completes Migration to Tilia Wallet

We're excited to share great news with the Second Life community: The Tilia Wallet payment system upgrade is now complete, bringing faster, more secure transactions and payouts!
This means that, on average, all existing payout connections and transactions within the Tilia ecosystem will now process faster than ever! This upgrade also marks a significant step forward in enhancing the financial and billing experience for all residents, ensuring greater security, reliability, and flexibility.
Tilia has managed payments, tax forms, and KYC processes for Second Life for a while now. With this upgrade, they now also handle all fiat currency transactions, including securely holding USD earnings in Tilia wallets and processing credits (payouts).
This upgrade also brings both familiar and new payout options, including PayPal, Skrill, and the newly added MassPay, with more payment and payout provider capabilities coming soon!
What This Means for You
The integration of Tilia Wallet brings several key improvements that will streamline and speed up your transactions and make managing your USD balances easier than ever. Here’s a quick recap of the major updates:
