Second Life Spotlight - Teddy Toocool
https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/second-life-spotlight-teddy-toocool-r11289/

Today, we’re shining a spotlight on Teddy Toocool, founder of GUY Magazine, creator of The PORTAL, and organizer of the PRIDE in Space event happening in Second Life this June. Teddy’s work has helped connect and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community in Second Life for many years. How long have you been in Second Life, and how did you first hear about it? I’ve been in Second Life for 16 years. I remember seeing an episode of the television show NCIS that mentioned Second Life, and I thought a virtual world would be interesting. I was here about a week, and a little black cat from China walked up to me at a welcome center and said that I looked like I could use some help. She helped me, and I’ve been here ever since. You are the founder of GUY Magazine and GUY Studios. What inspired you to create these projects, and how have they evolved over the years? I founded GUY Magazine in August 2020 because I wanted to create a good resource for men in Second Life. Nothing against women of course, but I wanted something that promoted the parts of the world for guys, particularly gay men. I ran across a photography magazine and that gave me the idea to pursue an in-world publication. I had no experience with publishing, so I taught myself and put together a staff. After more than five years of producing the magazine quarterly, I’d say the quality of the magazine has gotten better, and we’ve maintained our focus with content highlighting destinations, entertainment, fashion, vehicles, gadgets, décor, and much more. We also feature advertisements, commentary, original gay fiction, and an adult back page section. In March 2025, I founded GUY Studios because I wanted to embrace video as the next step in creative evolution in Second Life. With the help of a very talented videographer, Echelon Alcott, the studio produces GUY Talk. This talk show comes out every other month and includes four commercials featuring in-world businesses. The talk show and commercials can be viewed inworld and on YouTube under GUY Studios. I had always wanted to get into the video side of it. For me, it’s all about promoting places, products, and businesses, and video has really opened up many possibilities for people to showcase their in-world creations. Watch all episodes of GUY Talk on YouTube Running a magazine and media platform in Second Life is a major creative undertaking. What has the experience of producing GUY Magazine been like for you over the years? It can be very challenging and time-consuming, but I love bringing people together with different talents and personalities to produce something that others can use and enjoy. It is also very rewarding to meet new people and to promote their businesses and products. One of my favorite parts of the magazine is the Taste Buds section because I enjoy cooking in real life. The PORTAL is a gathering space and teleport hub for the LGBTQ+ community in Second Life. Can you tell us more about how that destination came together and what kind of experience you hoped to create for Residents? During my first year in Second Life, I tried to get into a group called Gay Archipelago, but they refused me because my Sim was on mainland. The owner challenged me to make my own group, and that’s how Gay Events Grid-Wide was born. Years later, I added other gay grid-wide groups for listings, hookups, shopping, and DJs and hosts. It’s all about helping the LGBTQ+ community to connect and to find people, so I followed up the groups and created a teleport board about 12 or 13 years ago. Today, it has about 200 places on it, and I try to keep it current. Years ago, there were no resources for gay people to find where to go and what was going on. It’s free to join the teleport board. People just have to ask me to put their logo and landmark on it. I also created a location for the board called The
PORTAL, which I’ve had for about seven or eight years now. It is meant to be the portal for the gay community and their allies to connect. GUY Magazine PRIDE in Space 2026 is taking place throughout June. What can visitors expect from this year’s celebration, and are there any events or activities you’re especially excited about? GUY Magazine has hosted a PRIDE festival each year since 2021. For this year’s event, I wanted to have a unique theme, so I chose PRIDE in Space. For the festival location, I put together a retro, atomic-age space venue, loosely based on the old American cartoon, The Jetsons, from 1962. The festival will be held May 31 through June 30 and have more than 70 booths from vendors who are LGBTQ+ or community-friendly. There will be free gifts, music, rides, and shopping. Cash prizes will be awarded to the residents with the highest scores on games marked by signs when the festival closes at 11:59 p.m. SLT on June 30. A kickoff party with DJ Viktor Sandman will be held on May 31 at 2 p.m. SLT, and a mid-festival party with singer Djembe and DJ Rave is scheduled on June 14 at 2 p.m. SLT. Festival goers can compete for cash prizes on the ASTRO racing platform on June 6 and 21 or boogie down at a retro roller-skating party on June 20. For the first time this year, we will have live theater shows from Sarabande Theater, DREAM STARS, Glinka Gallery, and the Varro Theatre, as well as live performances from rock singer Tillen and J-Rock band Tsuki Noir. For the complete schedule with dates and times, visit The PORTAL and look for the festival events board. LGBTQ+ Residents to connect, express themselves, and build community. Why do you think spaces like The PORTAL, publications such as GUY Magazine, and events like PRIDE in Space are important for the LGBTQ+ community in Second Life? Many LGBTQ+ people use Second Life as a place where they can explore their identity and connect with others in ways they may not feel comfortable doing in their offline lives. The PORTAL, GUY Magazine, and the PRIDE in Space event help to foster a powerful sense of community. It’s about bringing together people from all over the world in a virtual space. It’s always been important to me to help support LGBTQ+ people in coming together and to celebrate the amazing things they do. Tell us about some of the other Residents in SL who inspire you and whose work you admire. I am constantly inspired by the incredible people in Second Life who are so talented and passionate about creating. Creativity allows us to think, dream, and imagine, and that’s important, especially when the real world can seem so limiting and isolating at times. I am so blessed to be surrounded by staff and friends who inspire and encourage me. My visions of providing resources for gay men and supporting others could not have been realized without the work of three people whom I greatly admire and appreciate. The first is Mardrakus Hekatos, a gifted writer and editor whose stories, articles, and countless hours of dedication helped make GUY Magazine and many of my other endeavors possible. The second is Echelon Alcott, an exceptionally talented photographer and videographer whose stunning images and videos open windows into the magical world of Second Life and invite others to experience its beauty and creativity. The third is Jennifer Fluffington, whose encouragement, passion, and creative know-how continually inspire me to dream bigger and imagine more. Where can people learn more about your projects? Lower Land Prices, Reduced Buy Fee, and Expanded Membership Value. Making Second Life More Affordable!
https://community.secondlife.com/news/featured-news/lower-land-prices-reduced-buy-fee-and-expanded-membership-value-making-second-life-more-affordable-r11295/

We believe participating in Second Life should be affordable for more people. That’s why we’re continuing our long-term efforts to lower the cost of participating in Second Life with another major reduction in land pricing, slashing the minimum LindeX buy fee, and continuously adding more value to our paid membership plans. These changes are designed to empower Residents to create, explore, build businesses, and grow vibrant virtual communities throughout Second Life. Continuing to Lower Land CostsEverything in Second Life begins with land. Communities, homes, businesses, roleplay regions, shopping destinations, art spaces, educational experiences, live music venues, and social hubs all depend on virtual land ownership. For the past decade, we have steadily worked to reduce the cost of land ownership in Second Life – including several rounds of major pricing reductions spanning all the way back to 2017. Our new pricing update (effective June 15, 2026) continues that effort by making it more affordable to own and expand land in Second Life. These changes significantly reduce the cost of creating larger and more immersive experiences in Second Life while helping support the creators, educators, businesses, and communities that make Second Life unique. Whether you’re building a new home, launching a roleplay community, opening a store, hosting events, or expanding an existing region, our goal is simple: make it easier than ever to bring your ideas to life. To see the full range of land options and pricing, visit the Second Life Land store. Lowering the Barrier to Entry for the Creator EconomyIn today’s economy, many people are looking for affordable ways to relax, socialize, create, and explore online – without committing large amounts of money upfront. That’s especially true for Residents who are just beginning to engage with the Second Life creator economy – as well as those who are making smaller purchases over time. To help make participation more equitable we are lowering the minimum fee for buying Linden Dollars to only $.49 - reduced from $1.49 (effective June 15, 2026).
