Each year, Senses Cultural celebrates World Autism Month in April. The month begins with World Autism Awareness Day on April 2, according to the unanimous declaration of the United Nations Generally Assembly. As a result, April is designed to mark the importance of the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, and help improve the quality of life of those with autism who are integral parts of our societies.

We are excited to celebrate Autism Month this April, by raising awareness about autistic persons and their unique social interactions and non-standard learning experiences. At Senses Cultural, we specifically offer support to communities working on or dealing with autism.

Senses Cultural also promotes its Art for Autism projects to build awareness through the arts about the role of societies and women in dealing with autism.

This month, we urge you to consider donating to our other projects as well, including a gene therapy project that we launched with the UC Davis MIND Institute. The project funds two post-doctoral research positions at MIND to advance the knowledge about and treatments for autism. We also hold regular photography exhibits on autism, and offer prizes to photographers and artists.

The rate of autism in all parts of the world is rapidly increasing, so your support matters and is greatly appreciated. We look forward to continually sharing with you our latest programs, and thank you for your support!

Remembering Our Honorary Advisory Board Member

Franklin D. Lewis

Franklin D. Lewis, Senses Cultural Honorary Advisory Board Member, has sailed on. A great heart has passed away, and we wish his family and loved ones our deepest sympathy and unwavering support.

Professor Lewis joined our board in 2014, and shared his rich experience on converting narratives to support our work on autism and neurodevelopmental disorders. His own work focused on a variety of subjects, including the transfer of stories from Persian and Arabic to European languages, comparative literature and translation theory, Islamic studies, Sufism, and Baha’i studies. He guest-edited an issue of Iran Nameh about Rumi, and a special issue of Iranian Studies on Ferdowsi’s The Shahnameh. In 2000, Dr. Lewis’s Rumi: Past and Present, East and West (Oxford: Oneworld) received the BRISMES British-Kuwaiti Friendship award. The book has thus far been translated into Persian, Turkish and Danish. His translations of Rumi’s poetry appeared in 2008 as Rumi: Swallowing the Sun. Working with Iranian scholar Hassan Lahouti, he also edited and translated the Spiritual Lessons of Borhân al-Din Mohaqqeq of Termez.

Dr. Franklin D. Lewis grew up in Southern California and attended the University of California in Berkeley and the University of Chicago. He previously taught in the Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Studies at Emory University in Atlanta. He served as associate professor of Persian in the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and as deputy director of the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Chicago. He also served for a decade as president of the American Institute of Iranian Studies.

His loss and amazing good will is deeply felt in our community.

We recognize it is hard these days to start the New Year with a list of positive intentions. In the last few weeks we have witnessed human tragedy. In Europe, thousands of migrants and refugee families are without protection. In Ukraine, a devastating war is leaving people struggling in the cold without access to heat or electricity or basic security. In Iran, women and children are staging an uprising to reclaim their rights. The world is only slowly recovering from a global pandemic, but natural disasters are causing immense humanitarian crises.

As I wonder about the fate of these communities, I recognize that we cannot let their tragedies simply pass us by. Many of these communities need to enjoy the benefits of peace, security and health. We at Senses Cultural obviously need to think about the safety and security of families, mothers and children dealing with autism and neurodevelopmental disorders.

By seizing this moment to begin 2023 on a note of hope, I like to share that at Senses Cultural we stress the importance of human security and environmental sustainability to protect the autistic community and others dealing with similar neurodevelopmental disorders. If people with autism and neurodevelopmental disorders are unsafe, the consequence impacts the welfare of entire communities.

So please let’s join hearts to think about the needs of people with autism, and help us deliver our programs.

We wish you all a very good New Year!

Grief Over Earthquake in Middle East, and Fate of Families
**
We are deeply saddened by the devastating earthquake that has rocked parts of Turkey and Syria, and claimed thousands of lives. For years, Senses Cultural has worked hard to reach out to the Syrian refugee community, many of whom live along the borders between Turkey and Syria and others in the United States, to offer free services to families to cope with autism and neurodevelopmental disorders.

Our hearts go out to the suffering of the people of Turkey and Syria, and we are here to offer whatever services we have to aid communities in need to cope with autism and neurodevelopmental disorders in these difficult times. Our services are free, and available to anyone who reaches out through our website to seek them.

International Women’s Day | Art for Autism

Senses Cultural
March 8, 2023

March is Women’s History Month, March 8 is International Women’s Day, and the week of March 6 is Women’s Week. This week the Art for Autism at Senses Cultural is featuring women who are making a difference, as mothers and educators or scientists and community leaders. Their combined work promotes awareness on Autism, Autism Spectrum Disorders and Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

We also join our voices with all the women in the Middle East and around the world who have joined the women of Iran on their Woman, Life, Freedom March.

Happy Women’s Day!

A Nowruz wish for families with special needs

In this season of spring, we want to share a special family and community Nowruz wish, for health, happiness, peaceful times, and all the best that you wish for yourself and your family. To live in harmony and protect our environment and mother earth, let us be compassionate, embrace peace and prosperity for all, help those in need, protect women who symbolize life and freedom, and allow Nowruz to bring joy to our lives.
This is also a time for new resolutions. We believe in making positive and healthy choices this spring, and to start the year off on the right foot, we came up with a few easy steps to try out as parents and children or adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other neurodevelopmental disorders:

1- Act now if you or your child needs help with developmental milestones, by reaching out to us. At Senses Cultural, we offer free programs, podcasts and educational webinars on ASD and neurodevelopmental disorders, and we can help connect you with local and community resources, educators, physicians and experts working on the topic. Remember, there are plenty of resources to help you, and if you are a refugee, a migrant, or Persian-speaking, we have the resources to help you.

2- Prepare your home to enhance the safety around you. By making your home safe and secure, you and your child can stay out of harm, and by making it peaceful, you can reduce unnecessary stimulants.

3- Stay happy by joining a community of likeminded people who can have a positive impact on you and your family, and get rid of stress as much as possible. Follow our podcasts too, because our team of educators and psychologists offer tips on how to build a positive life.

4- Engage in our Art for Autism https://sensescultural.org/2021-art-for-autism/ programs, or in art programs in your local communities. Art, along with certain sports, create positive and meaningful lives. Find your child’s interests, connect through the arts with your family, and find art programs that you can work with to promote belonging to a group of likeminded individuals.
