Show off!
Create a habit of talking about your skills, experience, and talents.
Why to do it? To promote yourself.
The world is very competitive. If you want to be noticed, you need to constantly remind the society you exist and you are worthy.
You may be the nerdiest Django developer with >10 years experience on high-load projects. But if you don't tell the others that you are awesome, no one will find it out. And you may miss great opportunities.
So how to tell the world about your talents?
Contextually.
When writing a blog post, add an educative story from your background. Or leave a competent comment on something.
Talking to humans is more complicated because you have to think faster. Try to wrap your speech in an elegant blanket of self-promotion. Like this:
Example 1:
Stranger: We have used boto3 in our SaaS service, pretty cool!
You: Oh, I know boto3. My team used it when we were on contract with ZARA. How do you deal with caching?
Example 2:
Stranger: Our country name sounds very hilarious in English!
You: Wanna hear how "Russia" is pronounced in Chinese? You will laugh!

Diverse your growth
I'm obsessed with preparing to events that will happen to me in the future.
I talk to people who are older and smarter than me to adjust my today choices.
One of my today strategies is diverse growth. That means I'm not aimed to become a master in one field, but try many of them: programming, design, marketing, sales etc.
This is both good for business and for a career.
As for business, a diversified man will hire proper people with a higher success rate. Besides, understanding what your people do and why will give you a huge benefit as a leader.
As a multi-specialist, you will understand a wider variety of processes that may happen in your company. It will make you more useful because of a deeper understanding of what exactly each department is responsible for and how it operates. Also, it will help you to communicate with colleagues way better.
My hyposethis is that after 30 I will be less open to new knowledge, will not be so energetic.
I will be able to focus only on one major thing. Thus become an expert in it. But as a diversified folk, I will also have some experience and knowledge in other fields as a big bonus from the past.
Actually, this thinking may be applied to other aspects of life. While I'm young I strive to try different countries and workspaces to find the ones I like, I lived in a flat and in a townhouse and discovered the benefits of each, I change my hobbies once per 1 year.
Thus when I become an inert 35 y.o. man, I will know exactly what I love and what to do to live a more full and happy life.
N.B.: Thinking too much about the future may result in anxiety. Please do not be too much into it and carpe diem.

The UX Book I Recommend to Every Programmer
"The Inmates Are Running the Asylum" by Alan Cooper.
This book helps to understand the main purpose of any person who is involved in a software creation process.
It's dead obvious, but product owners, managers, designers and especially programmers tend to forget it.
The only purpose of a software developer - is to serve users. And to serve users properly you need to understand their needs and behavior patterns well.
We use to forget whom we serve and do a lot of unnecessary stuff: code optimization, useless refactoring, implementing features without a customer development, creating brilliant custom UI for projects where the Twitter Bootstrap can do the thing perfectly etc.
The book gives just the right mindset and helps to set priorities more effectively and ship better products faster.
Other things you will learn:
1) The importance of prototyping, how and when to do it.
2) Why not each configuration option worths being added.
3) What are the user scenarios common types and how to prioritize them properly.
The book contains Β±300 pages and easy to read. However, it repeats its ideas again and again and thus sometimes feels tiresome.
However, the majority of great non-fiction books can be reduced 3-10 times.

ββThe Rhythms Experiment
A friend of mine (Martyn) inspired me to run an experiment.
During 3 week I'd been recording my current physical and mental state. There was no particular goal for the experiment. I just wanted to get a bird-eye view of how I feel during a month. And then just see what I can learn from it.
So what I learned:
1) I'm very pumped in the mornings. So I'm better to do the complicated tasks before noon. I should also try to wake up even earlier.
2) A trip to coworking is extremely exhausting > better to take UBER or go in Thai in winter.
3) An instant sleep of 15 mins is a Godbless trick to refresh my body and mind.
As a bonus I got a deeper understanding of my state and feelings.
The sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JRbc39CchSqmrYahBt1zVwinoGp7MIpp-FBTVpvGUZU/edit?usp=sharing
Legend: a cell color explains a current productivity level: green best productivity - I feel super pumped, light-green feels OK - can work, orange - can barely work and the worst - when I can't work - is red.
A thick black border marks a quick session of a sleep 15 mins (I will write about this hack in the future).
Try it yourself! Who knows what you will find out about your body.

How to Find Time for a Side-Project
So you are young, skilled and passionate. You make your living with a desk-job.
Being a creative person, you are spouting with great ideas.
One day you started a side-project. "This is a wonderful idea and it's gonna be an awesome project!" - you thought on the day one. You are full of enthusiasm and energy.
You work a lot on evenings and weekends. So far so good.
Some time went by. It turns out it's quite a challenge to find free time for building the project. You now prefer Netflix on evenings and weekends. The progress is slowed down and you feel sad.
You seek new tasks management tools and time-management methodologies. You try this and that: work in the mornings, work before bed etc. But the project is still fairly stuck. Where is the root of the problem?
It's inside you :>
The majority of projects die because founders stop believing in an idea. They may not even admit it to themselves.
If you feel there is something more important to do but to work on your side-project - it's the very first sign of an approaching death. You lost the motivation.
Why does that happen? Because of 2 things:
1) You actually never had a steady motivation. When you started the motivation was not decent. It was based on momentary emotions, not on deep passion or real numbers and experience.
2) You kept forgetting to feed your motivation: frequent releases and feedback from real users is what keeps you and the team highly motivated.
So. Answering the initial question: how to find time for a side-project? Find a decent motivation first, free time will come automatically.

A Tiny Productivity Trick that Always Works
I want to share my favorite productivity booster. It's legal, natural, simple, quick and super useful.
In one of the previous posts (https://t.me/serene_startup/30), I showed my rhythms table. As you can see thick black borders always followed by a green high-productive phase.
A black border stands for a short 10-15 mins nap.
How-to: lay down on a sofa or on your folded hands on a table, close eyes and try to go off. It works even if you don't completely fall asleep. You don't need to sleep much: a couple of minutes is OK.
Effect: instant productivity boost. The effect lasts a couple of hours.
When: I got used to contantly monitor my state and use this trick whenever I feel tired. It can be 1 or more naps during a working day.
Side-effects: blood sugar go down a little. Short derealization.
Try this and tell me how it worked for you.

Where to Get Early Adopters
You started building a product a few months ago and finally got it doing the job. Congrats!
Now you need to test it on real users to get feedback and some satisfaction and become more motivated.
What you need to do is to show it to some early adopters. Not even adopters, to some enthusiasts, geeks. To people, who will agree to suffer your poor UI and use the product through pain and countless errors.
Those are not guys from Product Hunt and Hackernews. Betalist audience also expects something more-or-less polished and presented on a landing page. So where to find such users?
1) Friends.
Pros: they will never say "no". They will test it more or less thoroughly.
Cons: they will never say "you made shit". The feedback will not be sincere.
2) Cozy startups communities (like @solofounders).
Pros: the feedback will be various and honest. Also there are chances to get a good discussion of your product.
Cons: you first need to build trust in the community. It takes months of constant contribution. You can't just break in and get anything you ask.
3) Cold outreach (my favourite).
Pros: the fairest feedback. If you are a good asker (not just spam, but choose carefully whom and how to outreach), there are chances to get not only feedback, but a loyal follower or even a customer.
Cons: it takes a lot of time to find a suitable target and prepare a well-personalized letter to arouse interest. However, the more you practice, the better it goes.

One follower asked me why do not I share insights from my current project.
So here is one.
If you will ever start your own website builder project you will face this problem.
You will have your website builder app. It will be a SPA (single page app) running on something like ReactJS.
This app allows your users to build pages: change texts, photos, buttons, etc. Neat.
What happens to a page after it is built? It is published and can be accessed by thousands of visitors.
The visitors do not need to see the builder UI. You will have to somehow hide it on their browsers (ideally not to load at all).
Options:
1) Create a new bundle of your SPA and use SSR (server-side rendering) to display the HTMLs to the visitors.
2) Use a lightweight template engine and render HTMLs independently from the builder SPA.
I chose the 2) because my goal is to provide as smooth UX for clients and as bulletproof websites for visitors as possible.

1) Create a new bundle of your SPA and use SSR (server-side rendering) to display the HTMLs to the visitors.
Pros: you only maintain one rendering module. Dramatical development time reducing.Cons: taking care of SSR (another server) and bundling. Delay (to process SSR) after each small page change. If you donβt have time for establishing SSR (trust me, you will never have time because making a website builder is a ton of work) you will serve a SPA for landing pages which is unnatural and may potentially lead to problems (broken SEO, broken open graph fetching, delayed client-side rendering).2) Use a lightweight template engine and render HTMLs independently from the builder SPA.
Pros: blazing fast updates when editing a page, bulletproof architecture. Zero maintenance time.Cons: it takes a lot of time to add new templates because you need to support 2 codebases: one for the SPA and one for your lightweight template engine.I chose the 2) because my goal is to provide as smooth UX for clients and as bulletproof websites for visitors as possible.
Hey folks. I keep being silent and there is a reason for that.
I have participated Vipassana a few months ago. Vipassana is a 10 days retreat where participants are taught how to meditate. We had ~14 hours of meditation every day.
If I say it was tough I would say nothing. But more important is such a deep dive inside myself changed my character significantly. Now Iβm much more focused on my inside feelings rather than on the outer world, and this thing doesnβt go away.
Thus I kinda lost motivation to share my thoughts and experience here and anywhere else.
Iβm not wining, itβs just a fact.
Iβm not saying goodbye. But posts will come much less often.

Leave your laptop at work
You work with your MacBook all day long (if you are a startup founder you work much more than an average worker).
Then at home, you talk with friends on Twitter, watch Netflix, play video games, scroll memes, watch porn or (the worst) work even more. Your brain and eyes are constantly tired.
Here is a simple solution: leave your laptop in an office or co-working space. Make yourself a gift and start taking some real rest.
The main profit is that you will not work at home anymore. Even if there is a super important thing which must be 'fixed right now'. It can wait, you are not a firefighter. Thus nothing can pull you out of your relaxing context.
What are the other benefits?
1) This will increase your productivity the next day. Image a husky doggo which is locked up in a house all day long. When you are back home and take your friend for a walk, the doggo will run like a wind.
2) You will get real relaxation. Spend time with your family. Do something together: cooking, drawing, just talking. Your body and brain will enjoy it so much. Good relax means good work the next day.
Bonus: leave your laptop in an office on weekends too. This might sound a bit too hardcore. But I believe in you!
Give it a try. Do it just once and see what happens.

You don't have to build a unicorn
Startup media have created a picture of a successful startup guy who we all want to be. A successful startup is rich and cool. He meets with celebrities and raises millions.
But the real efforts behind this picture are never disclosed because we do not want to read stories and real-life - we want to dive into sweet dreams.
Today's epiphany is that you do not have to mimic this picture. You can go in your own way.
My life became much simpler when I dropped all those dreams about being "a successful startup guy".
To be successful and happy:
- You do not need a million dollars in revenue.
- You do not need Apple as your client.
- You do not need to have an interview on TechCrunch.
- You do not need a selfie with Bill Gates.
- You do not need to be a YC alumni.
- You do not need to have a cool investor.
- You do not need to live in California.
- You do not need to have a MacBook.
- You do not need to hustle in conferences an forums.
- You do not need to have an investor at all.
- You do not need to have a huge team - you can go alone if you want.
- You do not need a colorful office with a smoothie machine.
- You do not need a 'hockey stick' growth.
- You do not need to follow advice of smart people.
- You do not need a slick landing page (I can provide it though ποΈ).
- You do not need to build a unicorn - you can remain small for decades.
It is your startup and it will be created in your unique style.
Do what you want and enjoy your own amazing adventure!

I want to start blogging but I do not know what to write about
So you are working on a project. You are digging the tech very deeply, you made plenty of UX researches and got valuable feedback from your users.
You are so much into your industry and niche: you know less-know details and insights. You know everything about your competitors: its strong and weak parts, its history and personas behind it.
This is actually a unique knowdledge. It can not be found anywhere.
You are mining gold, and the gold is your unique experience. The combination of your product and your authentic approach to build and to market is freaking exclusive.
So share it!
People really do want to consume content from truly experienced folks. There are not so many bloggers who has spend years digging into one single industry.
Share your experience with others. You will be also read by guys who are making similar projects or who are facing similar problems.
Do not think about traffic and profits. Simply start sharing. This will make you happy because of your human nature - we need to be accepted and loved by the society.
And if it makes you happy you will want to do it again and again.
Passion comes first, results comes afterwards.

UX is everything
I love spreading my thoughts over the globe and see what happens. It helps both others and me. The readers learn something new and inspire, I put my past experience in order.
I have a WordPress blog but I rarely write something. One day I realized that WordPress makes me sick and that is why I procrastinate when there is an opportunity to create a cool post.
My point is if writing is simple and pleasant, you will write more.
And sooner or later obtain a writing habit. Naturally!
That is why I mostly write in this Telegram channel.
Telegram is easy to use and quick as hell (sweet native technologies awww yeaaaah!).
Medium and Teletype are good alternatives too.
So if you are struggling to begin your blogging career try not to think about creating a serious super-customizable blog with email-capture banners, tons of meta tags, open graph images for all social networks, cross-posting features etc - all that massive amount of features that WordPress gives you.
Try with a simpler tool. It can bring you much further π

Sup!
That Covid-19 thing perhaps made you stay at home. It is a good choice and I encourage you to do so.
But staying at home is lame. Mainly because working from home is a huge challenge.
Let me help you a little. Meet these tips which will keep you productive while staying at home:
1) Schedule your day. From now on you are responsible for the beginning and the end of the working day. Set certain "start working" time and "throw keyboard away" time. Don't cheat!
2) Context is everything. Trick your brain! Make it think you arrived to another place where you will work. If you have another room for that - you are golden. Changing clothes to something formal also works pretty well. Sit and think about some more things which will send a signal "it is working time!" to your brain.
3) Rituals can be your secret weapon. When you were working from the office, you started your day with a ride to the office, saying 'hi' to colleagues, drinking a cup of coffee with them. Now all those rituals are impossible. So to dive into a working flow you need to create new rituals. It can be a breakfast, a meditation session, a little yoga.
4) Your family must understand that you are not you when you are working. Tell them that you are busy. Really-really busy for very real.
However, if you have little kids you are doomed lol
5) This one is my favorite. If you tried everything and nothing helped. If you just can't work - don't work! If possible, throw your MacBook away and simply enjoy the time with your family. Don't make this temporary productivity loss make you upset. It will go and you will be back on the track soon.
I would consider this as an opportunity.
You changed the environment, now you should expect an immediate creativity boost. Try to finish one of those uncracked nuts - now it is a perfect time to solve complicated tasks!
It is also a wonderful opportunity to try yourself as a remote worker. Are you enjoying this? If yes, perhaps you should never come back to the office (Β¬βΏΒ¬)

3D will be a trend
Desginers from all over the world are trying to find a new way to inspire people. Vector illustrations and static mockups are cool, but to stand out, you need to do something that others can not do.
3D is not something you can try quickly. It has a steep learning curve and requires rare skills.
Rotato knows it and going ahead of time. Check out the 3D mockups presentation generator:

A couple of unobvious ways to promote your personal brand:
1) Run a local meetup. Even a small one (5+ ppl) counts.
2) Continuously help other people. This is how you get loyal fans. Help. Help. Help. This must become your credo.
3) Give public feedbacks on the tools you use. Mention it in Twitter so they retweet you.
4) Create a Telegram channel.
5) Follow interesting people on social networks. It works yet may feel unethical sometimes.
6) Ask the local community to do a speech and tell something cool.
7) Take each interview opportunity seriously and do your best.
8 ) Work on your charisma, speech, language, posture, look, smell.
9) Become someone's mentor.
10) Make a rich email signature. Do not be shy to include your projects, interview, social networks, photo.
11) Book a professional photography session. Do some photos in different outfits.
12) Join each online community and participate. At least occasionally.
13) Create an online community.
