Happy International Day of Awareness of the Special Development Needs and Challenges of Landlocked Developing Countries, 6 August, 2025. 2025 Theme: "#LockedOut: Breaking Barriers, Driving Connectivity". This year marks the first celebration of this international day. This international day is designated based on the UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/79/320 on 17 July, 2025.
This day is important because there are 600 million people living in 32 Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), facing hard development hurdles due to lack of sea access, geographical isolation, and trade costs that are 30% higher than those of coastal countries. Of course, those of us who come from countries with coastlines will find it difficult to imagine what their lives are like.
Of the 32 LLDCs, 16 are located in Africa, 10 are located in Asia, 4 are located in Europe, and 2 are located in South America. The smallest is Bhutan by less than one million people and the largest is Ethiopia by 135 million people. The severity of the challenges faced by the them is further enhanced as 16 of the 32 LLDCs are Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and approximately 40% of their urban population lives in slums or around 100 million people.
Let's us ensure that no one is left behind in our pursuit of sustainable development, wherever they are in our beloved Earth. Stay connected with all those landlocked countries, especially the developing ones which we call them by the abbreviation LLDCs.
