How Pokémon Go Data Built a New Navigation System for Drones
Millions of people playing Pokémon Go accidentally mapped real-world locations, and that data now gives drones 1.5-meter precision without GPS.
Late last year, Niantic signed a deal with a US defense contractor to adapt their spatial AI model for high-precision drone flight. Instead of relying on vulnerable satellite signals, the drones analyze billions of user-contributed 3D points captured during gameplay to figure out exactly where they are.
Standard GPS signals often get lost or jammed between tall buildings, while older offline navigation methods required expensive, custom-built aerial scans. Rigorous tests of the new AI system showed an error reduction of up to 70% compared to standard positioning tools.
It turns out your virtual monster hunts left behind a permanent blueprint of the physical world.
