🪵 Neanderthal wooden tools found preserved in stone in Spain
Spanish archaeologists at Abric Romaní have cataloged 597 wooden remains from Neanderthal living areas dating from 62,000 to 40,000 years ago.
You might picture early humans relying only on stone, but calcium-rich spring water coated fallen wood and tools in a limestone crust, creating hollow molds that preserved their shapes as the wood rotted away over millennia.
Among the finds are spears, bark trays, and a mysterious wooden club, showing you that woodworking was a routine part of daily life rather than a rare exception.
