The Boat of Charon (1919)
By
José Benlliure y Gil (1858–1937)
103 × 176 cm
Museu de Belles Arts de València
In The Boat of Charon, José Benlliure brings to life one of the most haunting moments in Greek mythology—the passage of souls across the river Styx into the underworld. The scene is charged with an eerie, otherworldly tension: an aged Charon, draped in tattered garments, thrusts his pole into the dark waters, ferrying lost souls toward their final fate. The sky is stormy, and the boat is filled with figures in varying states of despair and resignation.
Some souls sit shrouded in white, eerily silent, accepting their fate, while others writhe in agony, reaching toward the boat in desperation, pleading for passage. In the waters, half-submerged figures claw at the air, their eyes filled with terror—souls who, perhaps, were not granted passage because they failed to pay Charon’s toll.
To the right, a tormented spirit lifts his arms in a final, futile attempt to escape his doom, while behind the boat, ghostly figures swirl in a spectral storm, perhaps a symbol of souls lost to oblivion.
In Greek mythology, Charon is the grim ferryman of Hades, tasked with transporting the souls of the deceased across the Styx (or, in some versions, the Acheron)—the dark, treacherous river separating the world of the living from the dead. According to tradition, only those who received a proper burial and had a coin (obolus or danake) placed under their tongue could pay Charon’s fare and cross into the underworld. Those who lacked payment were doomed to wander the riverbanks for eternity, restless and forgotten.
Charon himself is a chilling figure—ancient, skeletal, and indifferent to the suffering of his passengers. He is not a judge of souls; he merely ensures their journey is completed. Once they arrive at the far shore, their fates will be decided by Hades, Persephone, and the judges of the dead (Minos, Rhadamanthus, and Aeacus). Some souls will be sent to the Elysian Fields for a blessed afterlife, others to the Asphodel Meadows for a ghostly, dreamlike existence, and the wicked to the Tartarus, a place of eternal torment.
