📢 An urgent appeal to the international community: Suwayda Governorate in Syria is facing an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. For weeks now, the region has been under a suffocating siege imposed by the General Security and Ministry of Defense of the de facto authority, alongside #tribal militias loyal to Al-Jolani’s transitional government. This has resulted in a near-total collapse of essential services and severe shortages of water, food, and medicine.
• We urgently call for your immediate attention to the tragic humanitarian disaster unfolding in Suwayda, Syria.
• As of today, Suwayda has been subjected to an escalating siege imposed by the de facto authorities, leading to an acute shortage of essential resources for survival, including:
• Drinking water
• Bread and food supplies
• Infant formula
• Medical supplies, including medicines and disinfectants
⸻
🔎 Key Facts:
• Suwayda’s daily need for flour is 100 tons. After the destruction of the grain silos and the mill in Umm Al-Zaytoun by government and tribal forces, and with the siege continuing, the risk of famine has become imminent.
• Water infrastructure has been systematically sabotaged, including the destruction of wells in all areas entered by these forces. For example, the Tha’la wells, which supplied Suwayda city with 70% of its drinking water, were destroyed.
• All major reservoirs and wells in areas controlled by these forces were either blown up with explosives or looted.
• This is happening amid one of the harshest droughts Suwayda has ever faced, leading to the depletion of vital water dams such as Al-Jowlan and Al-Roum in Dahr Al-Jabal.
• More than 30 villages have been partially or completely destroyed, leading to a mass displacement crisis. The number of internally displaced persons is currently estimated at 100,000, deprived of water and food.
• These actions reflect a systematic and deliberate policy of starving and dehydrating the civilian population of Suwayda — a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and human rights.
⸻
📌 We urgently demand:
1. Immediate deployment of UNDP and UNICEF teams to repair and restore water sources and damaged infrastructure.
2. Recognition that the capacity of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent is insufficient to address the scale of this disaster, and therefore, an urgent need for broader international humanitarian intervention by organizations capable of delivering systematic and sustainable aid.
3. The opening of a humanitarian corridor to allow the direct entry of relief and humanitarian assistance. This is not a political issue, but an urgent humanitarian necessity and a core principle of humanitarian response.
⸻
⚠️ Important Notes:
• The Damascus–Suwayda road has been turned into a political weapon, used to pressure the governorate by cutting off the flow of essential food, water, and medicine — effectively engineering famine and mass thirst as a form of collective political punishment.
• Failure to open a humanitarian corridor amounts to complicity in the siege, starvation, and deprivation of civilians.
⸻
📢 We call upon the United Nations and international humanitarian agencies to intervene immediately and assume their responsibility to prevent the starvation, thirst, and suffering of approximately 600,000 besieged civilians in Suwayda, who are left without the basic means of survival.
