How to prepare for an Investment Banking interview?


1) Know your CV inside out:
Every line in your cv has a potential to attract multiple questions around that, So it’s better not to lie on your cv. Also if you have any experience around IB - prepare well for questions on the deal / industry you have worked on

2) Employer:
Spend good time understanding what the company does, what are the products they have, recent deals, sectorial preferences, etc.

3) Modelling and technical skills:
Formulas / understanding such as WACC, FCFF, FCFE, EV, Valuation types, etc are basic expectations and can be asked in almost every interview
Modelling also forms a critical part of your overall evaluation- so make sure you are all hands on with it

4) Ecosystem understanding
Make sure you are prepared with a couple of companies in private market as well as public market inside out - including key investment highlights and strong backing.
Also get knowledge around a couple of sectors for ex - logistics / e-commerce and understand what is the business model that works, how do they make money and what are the unit economics

5) Cultural fit:
Know why you want to be in IB? What do you bring on the table and all other standard questions. Please put personal touch to it and shouldn’t be mechanical on nature

6) Take a breather:
No amount of preparation can make the nervousness go away and there is always going to be some element of surprise - so rather stay confident and its okay to say that you don’t know a particular answer rather than answering it wrong!
