“Since Mr Bukele came to power in 2019, his country (El Salvador) has attracted less investment, relative to the size of its economy, than any in Central America.” - The Economist

You can now obtain Uruguayan permanent residency in a single trip

This is obviously huge news. Up until recently, to convert temporary residency into permanent residency in Uruguay, you had to physically spend at least six to seven months in the country.

But starting earlier this year this requirement was quietly dropped. No announcement was ever made. Immigration agents and lawyers just started noticing that these checks weren't being done.

So effectively, you can now fly to Uruguay for a few days and apply for permanent residency in a single trip without any investment required. You just need to demonstrate minimal income (about $1,500 for the main applicant) and that's it.

This is quite incredible. Immigration programs usually become harder, not easier, especially in such high quality destinations.

Uruguay is now as easy as Paraguay or Panama were ten years ago, back when one could get permanent residency in a single trip.

It is now arguably Latin America's most interesting Plan B residency, especially when combined with attractive tax incentives.

We discuss this in the video with Macarena, my local immigration agent 👇

But there is a caveat

To be completely frank with you, this deal is too good to last. Uruguay immigration appointments will quickly get snapped up by applicants.

Nobody fully understands why these changes were implemented. Does the left-wing government want more immigration? Is it a temporary bug in their systems? Was a handover poorly done?

Regardless, you should advantage of this opportunity now if you want a Southern Cone Plan B. But realize that this pathway is not a guarantee, and getting an appointment may take as long as four months. In-process applications may even get halted if it turns out this was a fluke.

And you can always count on them making it more difficult in the future, by asking for minimum investments in the country as they do for people who want tax residency without spending much time on the ground.

This is like having an auditor on your case all the time, but also a free tax advisor.

Better or worse than some tax departments that don’t answer the phone anymore such as the IRS?

Montenegro is now making a clear distinction between EU citizens and others

•EU and Swiss / Norwegians can easily get residency in Montenegro
•Non-EU people are divided between:

∘Countries that have visa-free access to Montenegro such as the US, Canada, some East Asian countries, Latin America, etc
∘Countries that do not have visa-access to Montenegro.
And in this category, Montenegro unofficially makes a difference between people who:

⬩Do not have visa-free access to the EU, but have a history of traveling there
⬩Do not have visa-free access to the EU, and do not have solid EU travel history

This is a bit technical, and not all of it is written in law, but it's important for people to understand that citizenships really do have tiers in many immigration departments' internal protocols.

People are trying to get into Montenegro right now in order to be grandfathered into the EU when Montenegro joins in two years or so.

It's a gamble that could pay off, but that isn't as easy to pull off as many people think. Together with my immigration agent Marko we discuss all the ways to get residency in Montenegro, in the next post 👇

Personal freedom in Montenegro

Why are people moving to Montenegro?

•Low taxes
•Beautiful country that combines Mediterranean weather with skiing in winter
•High levels of personal freedom
•Homeschooling tolerated for temporary residents and multiple international schools
•International expat community
•Easy for Europeans
•Easy residency in Europe for non-European OECD countries

Just don't expect easy permanent residency or citizenship.

Much of Western Europe is now significantly better value for money than Latin America regarding restaurants.

Combined with throwing hundreds of people in prison over tweets and Facebook posts, the UK does not fail in its march towards all-encompassing state control.
For all those people saying banking busts only happen in sh*thole countries such as Paraguay, a family member of mine has just tried to make a transfer from his Credit Mutuel account in France.

Transfer denied due to « technical reasons »

There are not that many safe havens / tax havens left in the world.

Panama is not perfect and has its own risk profile but having a Plan B there is a no brainer.
Africa's next chapter is being written. Come see it for yourself.

Africa is misunderstood as an investment destination. Some dismiss the continent entirely, fixating on political risk, poverty, and instability. Others paint it as a boomtown of opportunity without highlighting the obvious challenges on the ground.

I believe the truth lies somewhere in between, and that serious investors should be paying attention. Africa is the final frontier of rapid demographic growth in the 21st century. As its cities expand, its middle classes develop, and its economies mature, I believe international capital will increasingly have no choice but to look toward the continent.

Africa is not a monolith. Identifying where opportunity actually lies requires getting on the ground, meeting the right people, and looking beyond the headlines.

That's why I'm inviting you to Nairobi, Kenya, May 23–27, 2027.

The Wandering Investor Live: Nairobi, Kenya 2027

Five days exploring investment, business, and lifestyle opportunities in one of East Africa's most dynamic cities.

Following our successful events in Buenos Aires and Panama in 2026, we're taking The Wandering Investor Live to Africa for our biggest event yet.
Nairobi is the preeminent business hub of East Africa with a lifestyle that surprises many first-time visitors.

After 18 years of traveling and working on the continent, Kenya stands out to me because of its established financial sector, entrepreneurial culture, growing cities, and position as a business hub for East Africa.

I want you to meet the people building businesses here, see what your money can buy, ask difficult questions, and decide for yourself whether Kenya deserves a place in your investment portfolio or international lifestyle strategy.

What will we explore together?

Over five days, we'll get out of the conference room and into the real Kenya:

• Public markets and major companies: Visit Kenyan businesses, meet local executives, and explore the Nairobi Securities Exchange and equity opportunities
• Actionable real estate: Tour Nairobi's residential neighborhoods and developments, including apartments starting at $50,000 and higher-end properties at prices that may surprise you.
• Entrepreneurship and private investment: Meet founders, investors, and business leaders in Nairobi's growing technology and startup ecosystem, often called the Silicon Savannah.
• Local experts: Hear about the country's development, investment risks, geopolitical position, and potential role in a wider Plan B strategy.
• The Nairobi lifestyle: Experience rooftop drinks, excellent restaurants, group dinners, and some of the city's most interesting neighborhoods.
• An unforgettable African safari: Head out in search of lions, rhinos, giraffes, and zebras, with Nairobi's skyline in the background. We'll also plan a visit to the famous Giraffe Centre.

All of this alongside a group of globally-minded investors, entrepreneurs, and independent thinkers who share your interests and ambitions.

Join us in Nairobi, May 23–27, 2027. Early Bird tickets are now available.
Attendance is limited, and we're now accepting requests for invitations.
