► Concerns about a further deterioration in the situation surrounding oil flows in the Middle East pushed oil prices sharply higher again overnight and during early Asian trading. Iran-backed Houthi rebels advanced toward coastal areas along the Red Sea bordering the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait. Oil prices have since given back part of those gains after hopes emerged for a potential and rare meeting on Monday between a six-member bloc of Gulf states and Iranian officials to discuss the future of the Strait of Hormuz. However, the meeting has not yet been confirmed. The reality is also that the increasing hostilities between Saudi-backed forces and the Houthis could complicate these plans, as they have significantly improved Iran’s position.

► Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman called President Donald Trump twice on Thursday and urged him to strike the Houthis. Trump declined and said that, for now, he has no plans to intervene directly against the Houthis.

► Oil prices reached multi-month highs overnight. At the same time, we are seeing US Treasury yields at decade highs, with the 10-year US Treasury yield approaching the 5% level. Combined with rising inflation concerns and increasing expectations for two more Fed rate hikes this year, the USD has appreciated - although not against the JPY, which benefited during Asian trading from somewhat lower oil prices, even though they remain at very elevated levels.

► We see a high risk that oil prices move higher again from here heading into the weekend. The US CPI data later today will likely confirm the inflation risks.

► We closed our USD/JPY position overnight at our TP ✅ - as well as our Gold position, our 49th consecutive successful Gold / Silver trade. USD/JPY is now trading more than 70 pips below our triggered TP. We are getting back in here.

► The USD initially jumped sharply higher in reaction to the US CPI data after core inflation came in at 0.3% MoM versus the expected 0.2%. The remaining data were largely in line with expectations, although the monthly core inflation reading is arguably the most important figure. We therefore see a CPI report that came in slightly hotter than expected - although potentially not compared with shadow expectations after yesterday’s hot PPI data.

► Accordingly, we initially saw an immediate spike in the USD, which then cooled again. Our USD/JPY hit the TP ✅📸 - overall an absolutely perfect trade.

► The market is not treating the CPI data as a negative surprise. This is also visible in Gold, which is now trading above its pre-CPI level - although in the initial reaction it even fell below the key $4300 level, as we predicted.

► We are getting back into USD/JPY here and are getting a similar entry to before - actually even lower! We could see some additional cooling in the USD first, but expect USD gains toward the end of the session and also expect oil prices to likely move somewhat higher again before the end of regular trading.

► EUR/USD fell slightly further below the key 1.16000 level. This level will remain the key level today and also into next week.

► We see a market reacting with relief, as shadow expectations for the CPI data were likely higher than official analyst expectations following yesterday’s sharp rise in PPI. However, PPI typically leads CPI by around 3-4 months - so this is no real relief at all, particularly as there are signs that inflation is accelerating again. US core CPI rose 0.3% MoM in August versus +0.2% expected. No surprise: The gasoline index rose 3.9% in August, accounting for around one-third of the monthly increase in the all-items index.

► Rate hike expectations rose - initially in a panic reaction. But even as the market calms down again, I expect around 70-80% to now price in a Fed rate hike - current numbers even show 89%!

► Gold is now trading above $4380, and we expect increasing resistance from here toward the key $4400 level and beyond. Silver is up more than 2.2%, although following significantly larger losses in previous sessions.

► Gold is extremely volatile here, but we are starting to build a SHORT position. As so often in recent sessions, we are once again taking the contrarian position. This is a high-risk trade, and we also expect Gold could still rise above 4390 and potentially toward 4400 or slightly above before turning lower.

In addition, US Treasuries are stable for now after the recent sharp moves. Oil prices have also declined from their overnight shock highs - another temporary relief. Our position is now off-profit. We are tightening our TP ✅ a bit further, but expect investors to turn more cautious again - particularly in the second half of US trading. You can make a re-entry (SHORT) in the 🔽 7675 - 7689 range, allowing us to close significantly in profit near our initial entry.

► We are seeing broad gains in New York. Oracle’s strong earnings report is also providing additional tailwinds for the important AI infrastructure sector, with ORCL itself up almost 8%.

► In the short term, we want to benefit from the rebound moves and are choosing DELL here, which is currently trading around 1.8% higher near 516.00 - after the stock fell 5.4% yesterday. We already sold DELL on Wednesday when the market, and particularly retail traders, aggressively bought the stock after earnings, only to then run into the unexpected correction - at that point Dell was still more than 12% higher than it is now. We sold that spike completely against the market and could hardly have been more right. Dell then even saw significant panic selling.

► Dell saw further sharp losses during late US trading yesterday - losses that were too strong and driven by panic selling.

► ORCL’s strong earnings report is actually also a major tailwind for DELL, even though both companies compete in large-scale AI infrastructure development - but in reality far less than most traders think. If anything, the opposite is true: All AI infrastructure stocks benefit from the enormous demand for AI infrastructure solutions. ORCL’s earnings report was strong, but significantly less impressive than what DELL reported. We want to trade the initial dip buying in DELL and expect immediate, fast gains. It is therefore important to enter quickly here!

► We are seeing strong dip buying - at times even panic buying - which has now pushed DELL sharply higher like almost no other stock. DELL was the perfect choice at the NYSE opening, although the rapid gains may have caused some of you to miss a good entry (Dell opened at 518.07; unfortunately, due to the delayed opening, I also did not get a good entry myself 📸). This is exactly the kind of fast buying we expected immediately after the NYSE opening. If you are still LONG, you can close significantly higher - potentially even near/above 550.

► However, I still do not share this extreme optimism here, and we are selling the sharp gains that have now pushed the Nasdaq up 1.2%. The Dow is up 600 points. We still expect the S&P 500 to face resistance near current levels - specifically in the 🔽 7675 - 7695 range.

► We are seeing the first signs of profit taking in the chip sector - particularly in memory stocks.

► Oil prices are down more than 3% today with around two hours remaining in regular US trading - although this follows yesterday’s surge of over 6%.

► We expect some returning gains from here in the final trading hours, as investors remain concerned about further escalation in the Middle East. Fighting has now also spread to the Red Sea coastal areas near the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The Iran-backed Houthis are gaining significant ground in Yemen and attacking Saudi Arabia’s oil infrastructure. This leaves the kingdom facing a choice between expanding its military operations and accepting greater rebel influence. The Houthis’ advance near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait increases their ability to disrupt shipping through the waterway and also strengthens Iran’s negotiating position.

► Saudi Arabia has been forced to suspend operations at some energy facilities that came under attack 📸. This advance comes as Iran attempts to regain control over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz following the outbreak of war with the US and Israel. This makes the Red Sea increasingly important as a route for Saudi oil exports.

► We are buying Brent here, which has fallen slightly more than WTI, and expect prices to edge higher into the regular close and during after-hours trading amid concerns about further escalation over the weekend.

On Friday, we closed two more Gold positions 📸 - one of them already during early Asian trading - bringing us to 50 significantly profitable Gold / Silver trades in a row. An achievement I never thought would be even remotely possible to reach.

► Days like today show very clearly how heavily the FTSE 100 is still shaped by the “Old Economy” - significantly more so than other major European indices. The FTSE 100 is trading clearly in positive territory, up almost 0.8%, supported by financials, energy, materials, and defensive stocks overall. At the same time, we saw losses during the Asian session after oil prices jumped sharply again. Saudi Arabia shut down a major crude oil pipeline following attacks, disrupting a key route that bypasses the Strait of Hormuz. Oil prices are up around 2.5%, while fuel prices - including diesel and E10 in Europe - are reaching or approaching record levels.

► We are also seeing declines in AI-related stocks after Anthropic and OpenAI announced measures to slow the race toward ever more powerful AI models and better understand the risks associated with the technology following a series of security incidents. The two companies, which develop the world’s most powerful AI systems, are calling for a slowdown in AI development. However, this may face resistance from forces within the tech industry, financial markets, and the Trump administration, as gains in AI-related sectors have recently been a major growth driver on Wall Street.

► Even though traditional sectors are likely to outperform overall, general sentiment is too negative to expect significantly more upside from here. We are selling the strong short-term outperformance of the FTSE 100.

► Our S&P 500 position closed at TP ✅📸 at the start of Asian trading. The strong USD also pushed our USD/JPY into TP ✅📸. With losses in Asia and the US, the more tech-heavy markets - which are much more dependent on the performance of AI-related sectors - are starting the week clearly in the red. We see Chinese markets as less affected by calls to slow AI development, which also shows that AI development in the US (+ “Western world”) and China is increasingly diverging.
