How to make notes for Mains/Optional?

Let's understand some basics and let's be clear.
1. In GS you'll write an answer for 250 words and 150 words

2. In Optional it varies between 150. 200 and 250 words

3. Your time is limited.

Then why are you making notes running through pages.

A simple trick for mains is preparing for questions specifically. Which means, suppose you're reading the topic floods in disaster management. If I was you, what would I be doing?

1. First I'd read the PYQP mains to understand what's been asked. It's a very simple topic. Three things would be asked.

Causes of floods
Consequences of floods
Adaptation and mitigation
Recommendation by NDMA

Nothing more than this will be asked.

If it's a 150 word question then only two topics would be asked. So we clear in our assumptions?

Now how will you make the notes?

You should start an introduction of 3 lines. Start with an intro in your notes. Think of the best intro, search and write it down.

Now the body. Divide the topic And write points in bullet format.

Just 5 points in each topic. But the best ones. You'll read only those 5 points. Not add anything. Keep on revising those point till it rests in your subconscious memory.

Make a map. Think what map you can make. Add a lot of content in your map.

Finally a way forward or conclusion as the question/topic demand.

One thing, the entire answer shouldn't cross 3 pages. You should make your notes in answer format and then write it.

Revise and revise.
Next time when you read something about floods in newspaper or anywhere don't make notes. Because your notes is already made. Skip that in newspaper. Slowly and slowly you'll see a lot of things gets repeated in the newspaper. Your reading time of newspaper will reduce as so the headache of making notes. When there's news on floods just pick up your notes and read it. That way you're revising rather than just reading the newspaper
Don't write a book in the name of making notes. You're gonna be a bureaucrat first, an author later. Once you become a ranker you can obviously publish your notes. Till then don't write a book or a PhD thesis. Be very specific and trust your notes.
