Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) Tamil Nadu Project – Field Campaign Associate

ABOUT I-PAC

Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) is the platform of choice for students and young professionals to participate in and make a meaningful contribution to political affairs and governance of the country, without necessarily being part of a political party. I-PAC started as Citizens for Accountable Governance (CAG) in 2013 and has been operating in the socio-political domain for the last 5 years. This group, founded by young professionals from renowned academic and professional backgrounds, is described as India’s first and largest cross-party political advocacy group. I-PAC has transformed the way elections are fought in India by introducing professionalism and innovation at scale in campaigning. I-PAC aims to bridge the gap between citizens' aspirations and the incoming Government's priorities in its endeavor to support the election of visionary, progressive and inclusive leaders to public offices. IPAC has ensured that citizens' agenda becomes focal to its campaigns through 'Nitish ke Saat Nishchay' in Bihar and 'Captain de Nau Nukte' in Punjab. In UP, through the 'Kisan Yatra', I-PAC brought back the focus on the demand for farm loan waiver which found resonance across the country. In the recently concluded campaign in Andhra Pradesh, where YS Jagan and YSRCP registered a resounding victory, I-PAC was instrumental in drafting the ‘Navaratnalu’ – YS Jagan’s 9 welfare schemes to improve the living conditions of the people of Andhra Pradesh. Over the next 14 months, I-PAC executed YS Jagan’s Praja Sankalpa Yatra, wherein he took the message of the Navratnalu to the people and refined it further by getting a better understanding of their issues and aspirations.

Winter Study Tour aka Bharat Darshan has been one of the most excited phase of our professional training. The excitement started the day when we had received a mail to state our preferences over options of various routes. The excitement that infected us lasted till the day when we left New Delhi for our block leave. During the pre-WST talk, Nandini Ma’am said us, “Come back wiser”. Let me share my experience of my Winter Study Tour.

I was allocated Route no 4 which was my first choice. Our trip started from Kashmir valley to Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana and finally ending in New Delhi. Most of the places I visited during my travel was new. I have never been to Kashmir, Assam, Andaman, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

WINTER IS COMING…

So the entire trip was a new and unforgettable experience for me. The week before we left, there was intense snowfall in Kashmir Valley, especially Srinagar and hence most of the flights were cancelled. Though we reached Jammu, we were skeptical on reaching Srinagar and miss some exciting days of our trip with the Indian Army.

With some luck, our flight just got delayed by few hours. Our flight from Jammu to Srinagar was the first flight in a week. The half-hour travel sitting on the window seat and glancing the Pir Panjals were breathtaking. When the flight landed at Srinagar airport, it was totally covered by snow. Stepping out from our flight, winter and cold winds started gripping us.

We were divided and few of us were made to stay in the Old Airport Cantonment area of Kashmir. I’d wish to put on record the hospitality given by the Indian Army to us and the way we were shown various arms of the Indian army. No officer or jawan was ever hesitant to explain something to us or make us feel comfortable.

Travelling in the army convoys with Bullet Proof Jackets and Patkas all day made us feel realised how tough it is the life of an army man. While our internet and prepaid connections were cutoff the moment we entered Kashmir, our jawans were living that life, in farthest corners which remain cutoff during the winters, eating tinned food and guarding our outposts so that no terrorist infiltrates inside our motherland.

We explored Kashmir in one of the most tumultuous time in its history. With article 370 abrogated practically and Internet cutoff, life was indeed tough in the valley. But a positive result was that there were no major disturbances. Post-abrogation, not a single civilian life was lost due to stone pelting or insurgency. Even the NRC-CAA protests all over India had minimal impact in Kashmir. Extreme circumstances requires extreme measures.

While interacting with various army officers I realised one thing. Army is trained to kill and not to govern. Army can ensure dictated peace and hold the region in a semi-independent state for the civilian government to take over and maintain law and order. I increasingly felt how important Civilian government is and the IAS is. In the 70 years of independence India never slipped in being a military government like Pakistan or an authoritarian government like China because we trusted our democratic institutions and made them to work for the people.

The treasure of Central India

Madhya Pradesh showed us some of the best kept secrets of India. Forts such as Gwalior fort, Mandu fort etc., Bhimbetka caves, Smart city mission in Gwalior, Solid waste management in Indore, Mahakaleshwar temple of Ujjain and Sanchi Stupa. Over and above all this, we had our airforce attachment at Gwalior base, the place from which Balakot airstrikes happened. The 1st Squadron (The Tigers), the oldest of IAF’s Squadrons with Mirage 2000’s as their primary fighter jet. The attachment became even more exciting when we met a fighter pilot who was a part of Balakot operation. Apart from seeing the cockpit of Mirage 2000 firsthand, we also saw Sukhoi Su 30 MKI, MIG 21 Bison (the jet used by Wing Commander Abhinandan) in Balakot operation.
