Guys pls welcome Ishwarya R AIR 47 IN UPSC CSE 2019... Currently an IRAS PROBATIONER and incidentally ex member(now Admin cum mentor) of this Group😁
Friends,
Many of you will be fans of cricket. From sachin to dhoni to kohli, we'd have had our icons. You know why they are icons? They practice a lot to excel.
Professional cricketers have an analysis of their past shots, the shots of the opponent etc. They study the opponents bowling style to understand how effectively to bat against them.
But that's not the only thing they do. They also focus a lot on their fitness regime and try to be at the peak fitness levels.
A sum of all the above is success. So why I'm saying this now?
1. The everyday fitness which is tiring yet a must is just like the reading you do everyday. It will be tiring and sometimes you may question what's the necessity of all this and think there are easier ways outside. But think again for, this everyday reading is one which keeps you updated. Or in cricket terms, in the form. If you study regularly and fulfil your targets, you will have the first level of confidence
2. The second is about analysis. Players look for the mistakes they have committed earlier such that it doesn't gets repeated again. And they've the help of professionals analysts too.
But in preparation for upsc, we're our own analysts. So it's very important to analyse our failures or mistakes. Am I not very clear yet? Ok, allow me to explain.
If you've attempted a mock test, what one would do. He/she would correct ir once and then read the answers for the wrong/un-attempted ones and move forward.
Is this an analysis? Touch your heart and answer this. Take a second or two, if you fall in the above category. Think whether what you are doing is an analysis?
No is the answer.
An analysis is about understanding your pros and cons. You've to analyse why you're getting a particular question wrong. You need to list down the causes for getting it wrong. You need to do a cross analysis of the previous mocks to understand have you been repeating the same mistake. If yes, then you've to plan for a course correction.
You've to see the questions which you are getting right and make sure you understand that also.
This breaking down of your performance into brick and brick is called an analysis. And my second point is, i want all of you to do this for every test you're going to be writing.
If I'm very optimistic, I'd ask you to lool back at your previous tests too. But I know that time is a scarce resource. Hence focus on analysis and not merely reading down.
3. Now coming to the third and most final, also the important point. Why do you think people do net practice after their fitness? To get a feel of the nuances that they've learnt right?
Do you think Dhoni just came to the field and start hitting helicopter shots? No. He has to analyse the bowler, time the shot and then deliver. It involves so much of planning.
So i want you all to start planning how you're going to play those two hours. Which shots you're gonna take at first and which at last. I want you to make sure if something goes wrong, like if the batsmen is hurt, who's gonna be a bye runner or who's gonna be the substitute at the field.
I just want you to be prepared mentally so that you don't say tomorrow this wasn't expected. UPSC is known for throwing surprises. So be ready to get surprised.
One way of planning is learning to play shots just by seeing the action of the bowler. How?
Suppose I give you a paragraph to read, say, about the office of speaker. Now, in part of your regular fitness regime you'll give a reading.
In net practice you'll attempt few questions on the topic.
But what i want from you people is to get into the psyche of the bowler. Think how's he gonna deliver the ball. Whether it'll be on the leg or off. Whether it'll be to the stumps or a wide ball.
I want you to be the question paper setter. The ultimate weapon, the Brahmastra. Put your mind in the mind of the bowler and think, if the bowler has to defeat you, how will he? For *YOU KNOW YOUR WEAKNESS MORE THAN ANYONE*
So while reading a topic frame a question of your own by thinking if I'm going to get bowled / get a wrong answer how would i

set the question.
In this transformation, you'll start thinking from the question paper setter perspective instead of the student perspective. You'll know that your off side is weak and there's a gully. Won't you be careful there?
Apply the same logic here. You'll get through very easily and the next shot would be a helicopter one.
All the very best guys.
