⚠️ BitFuFu doubled its hashrate in a month — to 20.6 EH/s. While some miners exit for AI, this one went the other way.

BitFuFu's August report, out this morning: Bitcoin production up 55.4%, from 112 to 174 BTC. Total managed hashrate hit 20.6 EH/s — up 45.1% from July.
Self-owned hashrate grew just 5.6%, to 3.8 EH/s. The real jump came from third-party hosting clients — up 58.5%, to 16.8 EH/s. BitFuFu is scaling mainly as a hosting platform.

Fleet efficiency improved through the scale-up: 16.7 J/TH, down from 18.0. Power capacity up 35%, to 344 MW.

The context: just yesterday, Hyperscale Data announced it's fully exiting mining in Michigan for a $1.2B AI deal. Same week, opposite bets on the same megawatt.

At BTC near $ 80,500 with hashprice recovering, BitFuFu's expansion looks calculated, not reactive.

Takeaway: the market isn't one direction. The difference isn't whether to stay in mining — it's how efficiently you run what you chose.

📊 Independent test: how much VNISH actually saves in real summer heat.

The Hobbyist Miner tested stock Bitmain firmware against VNISH on two machines at 95°F (35°C) — real summer shed conditions in Pennsylvania.

On the L9 (Scrypt), power draw dropped by roughly 400W at comparable hashrate. After the 2.8% dev fee, net savings came out to $0.49/day per machine, around $179/year.

At scale: 100 machines — $17,872/year. 500 machines — nearly $90,000/year in net savings, on electricity alone.

The test also highlights features that don't exist on stock firmware at all: auto-switching between presets based on chip temperature, automatic restart when hashrate drops below threshold, minimum fan speed control. For hosted fleets, the author considers this just as valuable as the wattage savings — less downtime, fewer site visits.

⚠️ The US is losing its share of global Bitcoin hashrate. Russia and China are gaining. Bloomberg broke down why this week.

Per Hashrate Index data, Bitcoin mining capacity has dropped 18% compared to last October. The biggest decline: US-listed public companies redirecting their power into AI infrastructure.

The 2026 numbers tell the story. US hashrate share fell from 37.5% to 36.7% — a loss of roughly 55 EH/s. Russia's share grew from 16.4% to 17.2%, and China's from 11.3% to 12.2%.

Both Russia and China also lost absolute hashrate this year — Russia 13 EH/s, China 10 EH/s — just less than the US did, which is why their relative share went up. The entire global network is shrinking unevenly, and the US is shrinking fastest.

Mining companies with existing power infrastructure now have a choice — keep mining Bitcoin or lease those same megawatts to AI data centers. AI pays more. Public US miners, under shareholder pressure to maximize returns, are choosing AI at scale.

For Russian operators, this stacks on top of what we covered back in early July: Bitcoin's legalization for foreign trade opened a legal monetization channel right as US competitors are physically leaving the mining market for AI.

Fewer competitors online, more share for whoever stays efficient.
