🧮 Bitcoin miners are refocusing on AI and high-performance computing (HPC) to diversify revenue flows and capitalize on growing demand. Companies such as Core Scientific, Hut 8, and Bit Digital are leveraging existing infrastructure to capitalize on opportunities that will be valued at $38 billion by 2027. This shift provides stable revenue and higher profit margins, allowing miners to be at the forefront of technological innovation.

📍Miners at a Crossroads: Bitcoin or AI?

Yesterday we looked at how institutions may soon pour billions into mining. But the story doesn’t end there.

We decided to dig deeper:
• Is switching from Bitcoin to AI really just a matter of swapping chips?
• What hidden costs are miners walking into when they rebuild for GPUs?
• How stable are AI hosting contracts if most clients are early-stage startups?
• And what compliance headaches await those who leave the relatively simple world of ASIC farms?

On the surface, AI looks like easy money. In reality, the pivot is far more complex — and carries risks that could drain both capital and focus.

Meanwhile, miners who stay put may be positioning themselves for the next wave of institutional demand. The real question is: who survives long enough to ride it?

💡We break it down in today’s investigation:

😬Mining conditions are tightening — and the market is starting to show it

The US power market is quietly changing the rules of the game
In key regions covering 13 states and more than 67 million people, regulators are revising electricity tariffs as AI data centers rush to secure direct access to generation. Power is becoming structured, scarce, and expensive.

🧐That shift is already visible on-chain
Bitcoin’s network hashrate has slipped on a monthly basis — a pattern that typically appears when marginal miners can no longer absorb rising costs.

Electricity breakeven levels for common ASIC models have dropped by over 35% year over year, forcing difficult decisions across the industry.

⚡️Galaxy Digital just closed a deal worth almost $1B — but not in mining.

On July 6, Galaxy delivered 133 MW to CoreWeave at its Helios site in Texas, with CoreWeave already committed to 526 MW under a 15-year lease across all three phases. Helios was originally a bitcoin mining facility built by Argo Blockchain back in 2021; Galaxy bought it in 2022 for about $65M after Argo hit trouble during the crypto winter.

After the 2024 halving, mining margins tightened, power got more expensive, and AI companies started paying more for the same electricity miners used to count on.

But scale matters here: Helios is 2,200+ acres with gigawatt-scale grid capacity. That kind of pivot is available to almost nobody. Most operators aren't sitting on thousands of acres — they've got a fleet in a container. And the real question there isn't "leave for AI." It's simpler: is every unit actually pulling its weight, or is margin quietly leaking out through firmware and thermals nobody's checked in months.
