Sending the ‘Eid Sacrifice (Qurbāni) abroad to the poor?
Shaikh Ibn ‘Uthaimīn (rahimahullāh) states that it is not allowed to send money for Ud’hiyah (‘Eid sacrifice) overseas as a means of feeding meat to the poor. Then, he explains in detail why―and here are the main points he mentions:
1. People send the price of their sacrifice (Ud’hiyah) overseas to poor countries and the meat is given to the poor. Some people encourage this and adverts are placed to convince people to send money overseas for the sacrifice. This behaviour in the most part is due to their ignorance of what the Sharī’ah intends and ignorance of the Sharī’ah ruling in this matter.
2. The first and most important reason for the ud’hiyah is that the slaughter of the animal itself is an act of nearness to Allah ― it is from the most virtuous types of worship. So, the intent is the slaughter itself done by the one who is offering the sacrifice.
3. The slaughter in the name of Allah is mentioned at the time of sacrifice which one cannot do when the money for the animal is sent overseas to be carried out by others.
4. If the money is sent overseas, one cannot eat from the meat that is sacrificed as his ud’hiyah ― and eating from the sacrificed meat is something that is enjoined by Allah in His Book and also established as the Sunnah of the Messenger (salallāhu ‘alaihi wasallam), his family and his Companions. In fact, eating from the sacrifice is regarded as an obligation by a large number of scholars ― so, regardless of whether it is obligatory or recommended, if the sacrifice is done overseas, he cannot eat from his sacrifice (nor can his family, relatives, neighbours and the poor people of his town).
5. By sending it overseas, one has removed a great distinguishing sign of this day of ‘Eid from his land.
6. This great distinguishing act of Islam of Ud’hiyah is removed from our presence, and our offspring do not see it or feel its greatness ― when it is done in the location you live, the whole household feels this goodness and benefits from the sacrifice of ‘Eid.
7. So, it is a clear and great error to send the cost of the sacrifice to another land instead of doing it where you live.
8. The mistake they make is that they see the sacrifice solely as food for the hungry―and that is an error. If you are truthful in desiring to help the poor and to feed the hungry, then you should send money to them for food, drink and clothing. Who is preventing you from that?
9. So, you should clarify to the people that what they do is wrong (by sending money for sacrifice overseas)―explain to them that they should perform the ud’hiyah in their homes (locally) and eat from the sacrifice (and feed others).
10. So, the intent of the sacrifice is not to obtain meat for the poor―rather the most important intent is to attain nearness to Allah by the slaughter (dhabh) of cattle.
11. If one truly wants to help the poor and feed them, send them your money so they can eat, alhamdulillāh.
Allah stated:
وَالْبُدْنَ جَعَلْنَاهَا لَكُم مِّن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ لَكُمْ فِيهَا خَيْرٌ ۖ فَاذْكُرُوا اسْمَ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهَا صَوَافَّ ۖ فَإِذَا وَجَبَتْ جُنُوبُهَا فَكُلُوا مِنْهَا وَأَطْعِمُوا الْقَانِعَ وَالْمُعْتَرَّ ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ سَخَّرْنَاهَا لَكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَشْكُرُونَ
“And the cows, oxen, or camels driven to be offered as sacrifices ― We have made for you as among the symbols of Allah, therein you have much good. So mention the Name of Allah over them when they are drawn up in lines for sacrifice. Then, when they are down on their sides after slaughter, eat thereof, and feed the poor who does not ask, and the beggar who asks. Thus have We made them subject to you that you may be grateful.” (Al-Hajj: 36)

Q: Which is best to offer as sacrifice, a cow or a ram?
A: Offering sheep as sacrifice is better; however, there is nothing wrong in offering cows or camels as sacrifice.
The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to offer two rams as sacrifice, and offered one hundred camels on the day of his farewell pilgrimage. What is meant is that he (صلى الله عليه وسلم) offered sheep as a sacrifice which is best, and he who sacrifices cows or camels- one seventh of a camel, and one seventh of a cow- they are all good deeds and there is no problem in doing so.

"Your Excellencies, Highnesses, and distinguished guests, pilgrims performing Hajj, honorable attendees,
Peace, mercy, and blessings of Allah be upon you.
On behalf of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, we are pleased to welcome you and extend congratulations to you and all Muslims on the occasion of blessed Eid Al-Adha, praying to Allah to return it upon the Islamic nation with goodness and peace.
Allah has honored the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia with caring for the Two Holy Mosques and the holy sites and serving their visitors.
We affirm that, with Allah’s help and guidance, we will continue the blessed efforts undertaken by the Kings of the Kingdom since the reign of King Abdulaziz bin Abdulrahman Al Saud in carrying out this great responsibility.
In conclusion, we pray to Allah to accept the pilgrims’ Hajj and righteous deeds, return them safely to their homelands, and preserve our countries while granting continued security and prosperity.

Oh Allāh, we make supplication to You that You reward the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and it's rulership for all their efforts during this year's Hajj Season 1447 | 2026.
Upon visiting the The Prophet’s Mosque (Al-Masjid an-Nabawi) (صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ) in Madinah - the following book was being offered inside the Masjid 🕌.
📖📚 For the benefit of all pilgrims and visitors to read and take benefit.
The Subject:
From the important beneficial knowledge regarding the Hajj and Umrah - in preparation for the blessed season.
🎁 A complimentary gift provided for 🆓 - for all who visited the blessed masjid during the Dhul-Hijjah season 🏔️.
✅ Saudi Arabia declared the 1447 AH Hajj season a success with officials praising the highly coordinated operation - that enabled more than 1.7 million pilgrims to perform the annual pilgrimage in safety and comfort.
The announcement came after pilgrims completed the main rites of Hajj:
- including standing at Arafah (عَرَفَة)
- spending the night in Muzdalifah (مُزْدَلِفَة)
- performing the stoning of the Jamrat al-‘Aqabah (الرمي)
- the Sacrifice (الذبح)
- the shaving of the hair (الحلق)
- and ending with Tawaf al-Ifadah (طواف الإفاضة)

• How can it not be when its reward is so tremendous?
• An accepted Hajj: returning home free of sins and attaining Paradise.
• The benefits of this life and the Hereafter are attained and witnessed during Hajj.
• Imām Ibn Bāz: the four benefits of Hajj.
• When the Companions were prevented from performing Hajj: Al-Hudaybīyyah.
• The dream of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) in which he saw the believers entering Makkah in a state of security.
• Hajj is among the greatest manifestations of Tawheed, the Oneness of Allāh.
• The reward of the one who dies in a state of ihrām.
• A profound statement of 'Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allāh be pleased with him) regarding the Black Stone.
• The Day of 'Arafah: a day on which Allāh frees many of His servants from the Hellfire.
