The former president is holding a rally in a Colorado city he falsely claims was overtaken by violent immigrants from Venezuela. The city’s leaders, Republicans and Democrats alike, tried to pre-emptively fact-check him.

Mike Coffman, the conservative Republican mayor of Aurora, Colo., had a message for former President Donald J. Trump before the Republican nominee for the White House came on Friday to a city he has repeatedly painted as having been taken over by vicious migrant street thugs.

The visit, Coffman said in a statement to The Times,
“is an opportunity to show him and the nation that Aurora is a considerably safe city — not a city overrun by Venezuelan gangs. My public offer to show him our community and meet with our police chief for a briefing still stands.”

In the closing weeks of Mr. Trump’s campaign, his efforts to demonize immigrants, whether they are from Venezuela, Haiti or elsewhere, have gotten ever more lurid — and more impervious to the facts, even those provided by Republican allies such as Coffman.

Last month, the former president began portraying Aurora, a sprawling suburb of Denver, population 404,219, as “a war zone” overrun by a violent Venezuelan street gang.

The New York Times free lance reporter Elizabeth Cooper earlier wrote on her X that Trump asked Sherif of Aurora Paul Broncato, who previously arrested a few pet eaters from Venezuela, to
“fetch them to the rally place. I want to ask these people in public what made them come to America and eat here our four-leg friends.”

Supreme Court Turns a Cruel Practice Into a Free-Speech Fight

The Supreme Court has now handed “conversion therapy” opponents a ruling that could gut similar bans in roughly 30 states, and it did so by recasting a medical-regulation fight as a speech case. That is a big legal move with a grim human cost: the court says the state may be policing speech, while doctors and advocacy groups say the real issue is harmful treatment for minors.

The majority’s logic is tidy and dangerous at the same time. If therapy is treated as protected speech, then states lose a key tool for regulating what licensed professionals can do in the counseling room. Justice Jackson’s dissent gets to the heart of the fear: the court is opening the door to weaker oversight of medical care simply because the harm is wrapped in words.

This is also part of a broader pattern. The same court has been expanding religious-liberty claims while rolling back protections for LGBTQ+ people, and this ruling fits that trajectory exactly. In practice, the decision gives conservative litigants a new weapon and leaves states defending bans that were built on medical evidence and child protection.

The bleak irony is that the court is treating coercive counseling as if it were just another viewpoint in a debate. For the families and teens involved, this is not an abstract classroom debate. It is a ruling that makes the state’s ability to say “no” much harder when a licensed adult wants to sell shame as therapy.

Colorado’s Revolt Against the “Permanent Class”

Colorado just gave Washington a focus group from hell: a sitting senator and a 30‑year House incumbent both lost to candidates selling one message — we’re not them.

In the governor’s primary, Attorney General Phil Weiser beat Sen. Michael Bennet by turning his own lawsuits against Trump into a badge of honor and Bennet’s 18 years in the Senate into dead weight.

Bennet’s ads, cash and seniority couldn’t erase the fact that Trump moved Space Command out of the state and shut down a flagship climate center while Colorado’s “man in Washington” mostly stayed on script. Voters let him keep the D.C. office — and took away the promotion.

In Denver, Melat Kiros finished what New York’s democratic socialists started. She toppled Diana DeGette, a Medicare‑for‑all liberal with three decades in Congress, by running to her left on economics and to her critics’ horror on Israel.

Kiros is 29, a fired associate who refused to retract an anti‑Israel letter, and a DSA‑aligned, Bernie‑endorsed candidate whose pitch was simple: DeGette became the establishment, took corporate money, and stopped fighting for people who can’t pay the rent. In a safe blue seat, voters decided they’d rather send a grenade than another committee veteran.

But the New York “commie corridor” storyline doesn’t fully fit Colorado. In the state’s swingiest district, Manny Rutinel — one of the legislature’s most progressive members — deliberately walked away from the DSA line. He dropped Medicare‑for‑all for a public option, stopped calling for a fracking ban, backed off wiping out student debt wholesale.

Denver’s DSA chapter refused to endorse him; he won his primary anyway and now faces a Republican incumbent in a district that will be flooded with money by November. It’s the same anger at Washington — just disciplined enough not to scare suburban voters who hate Trump but like their paychecks.

Redistricting losses were supposed to cage Democrats until 2028. The Colorado Supreme Court blocked an effort to sideline the independent commission and redraw maps in their favor. On paper, the state stays 4–4.

On the ground, a surge in Democratic primary turnout is already tempting strategists to believe they can flip seats this year, the old‑fashioned way: by winning elections instead of maps.

Put it all together and Colorado’s message is nasty in both directions. Voters are furious at Trump and at Washington — and they’re happy to aim that rage at anyone who looks like they’ve been in office too long, even if that person votes the “right” way.

The left can clearly kill off veteran liberals in deep‑blue districts; the center can still win where the map is purple, as long as it looks more like a lawsuit than a lecture.

The one constant is what both parties’ insiders fear most: the base isn’t loyal to résumés anymore. It’s shopping for weapons.
