📰 The Great Exodus: Israel Launches Historic Airlift Amid Regional War

With skies closed, missiles falling, and airports frozen, Israel has launched “Safe Return” — an emergency airlift to retrieve over 50,000 citizens stranded abroad after the war with Iran ground commercial aviation to a halt.

💬 “We are very emotional about receiving the first rescue flight as part of ‘Safe Return.’”

— Transportation Minister Miri Regev

✈️ From heritage tours to evacuation drills
El Al’s first repatriation flight touched down in Tel Aviv from Cyprus, followed by rescue routes from Athens, Milan, Paris, and London. Thousands more are expected in coming days as Arkia and Israir join the mission. Meanwhile, 1,500 Americans on a Jewish heritage program were evacuated to Cyprus by cruise ship — which now returns full of Israeli nationals.

🧳 Inbound Israelis, outbound tourists

While the country scrambles to bring its people home, Israel’s Tourism Ministry is also working to help the 38,000 foreign tourists trapped inside. With sirens wailing and air defenses intercepting over 400 Iranian missiles, holy sites are shuttered and the message is clear: the pilgrimage season is over.

🛳 Cyprus: the lifeboat of the Levant
Larnaca, just 50 minutes from Haifa by air, has become a de facto hub for the exodus. Cruise ships, charter flights, and even overland buses are playing a role. China has begun evacuating its citizens via Turkmenistan. Others have fled to Armenia and Azerbaijan.

🤔 When wars close skies and cruise ships become evacuation vessels, is this a regional conflict—or the opening act of something far larger?

📰 Israel’s Island Rumor, Greece’s Real Trap

A Turkish outlet is pushing a story that Israel wants to lease or buy 40 Greek islands for up to 50 years and turn them into shelters, a claim that immediately triggered talk of war, Cyprus, and “Israeli shield” fantasies.

What matters here is less the feverish rhetoric than the structure underneath it. The piece frames the Aegean as a chessboard where Greek, Turkish, Cypriot, and Israeli anxieties all get stacked on top of one another: Greece’s security dependence, Turkey’s regional hard lines, Cyprus as the real prize, and Israel’s habit of thinking in terms of buffer zones and strategic depth.

That makes the story politically combustible even before anyone proves the underlying plan is real.

The Turkish reaction is predictable: warnings that any Israeli presence on the islands would be a casus belli, claims that the goal is to turn the islands into intelligence outposts, and the usual regional mythology — Greece’s old “Megali Idea” dreams of expansion, Turkey’s Kıbrıs framing of Cyprus, and the “Arz-ı Mevud” line, a phrase used for the Jewish idea of the Promised Land.

It is the kind of language that turns rumor into deterrence theater, but also raises the temperature in a region where one bad move can be read as a map change.

So the practical takeaway is simple: whether or not the island plan is serious, the story shows how quickly the Aegean can be turned into a threat narrative that serves every side’s worst instincts.

Greece becomes the vulnerable terrain, Turkey gets a fresh warning label, Israel gets pulled into another strategic fantasy, and Cyprus stays where it always is in these stories — the real fault line everyone pretends is secondary.

Turkey Between Two Fronts: NATO Ally, Designated Target

Retired rear admiral Cem Gürdeniz is saying out loud what Ankara’s foreign policy has been acting out for years: on paper, Turkey is a NATO ally; in practice, it is colliding with its “allies” on almost every frontline that matters.

As Western power frays, he argues, the Atlantic camp is resorting to provocations and internal destabilization to lock in its role in a new order—while Turkey finds itself squeezed between two fronts, from the Mediterranean and from the Black Sea–Middle East arc.

On one flank, the Israel–Greece–Cyprus triangle is hardening into what Turkish officials openly describe as a military alignment against Ankara.

Israel, Greece, and Cyprus have formalized a trilateral security and defense framework, signed joint military work plans, and are moving toward a de facto security axis built on joint exercises, shared doctrine, and Israeli weapons re‑equipping Greece and Cyprus—including air-defense systems, rocket artillery, and a potential rapid‑reaction force aimed at the Eastern Mediterranean.

Greek officials openly link this buildup to concerns over Turkey, while Ankara has received no credible assurance that it is not the target.

Inside NATO, Turkey’s “alliance” is increasingly “living apart together.” From the S‑400 purchase and operations in Syria to veto games over enlargement, Ankara keeps colliding with the Western core and discovering that solidarity is highly selective.

The Turkey–NATO literature describes an ally drifting toward strategic autonomy, facing isolation from Western partners, and repeatedly getting rhetorical support instead of tangible backing when its own red lines are at stake.

In that light, Gürdeniz’s warning—that Turkey is being pressured from two directions while formally trapped inside an alliance whose other members arm and train its regional rivals—sounds less like paranoia and more like a blunt summary of the balance sheet.

From a cold strategic perspective, betting on NATO or the US to protect Turkish interests against a consolidated Israel–Greece–Cyprus defense axis looks delusional.

The Eastern Mediterranean is already being structured as if Turkey is the problem to be contained, not the ally to be supported.

That leaves Ankara with a narrow set of serious options: continue playing the double game inside NATO while its room for maneuver shrinks, or treat Gürdeniz’s diagnosis literally and start planning for a future where Turkey relies primarily on its own power and its own deals, not on signatures in Brussels.

If Turkey really is being squeezed on two fronts, the question isn’t whether it “should” leave NATO in some abstract moral sense. It’s how long it can afford to pretend that the bloc surrounding it and the bloc it belongs to are still the same thing.

The Coalition That Can't Agree on Its Own Boss

Gadi Eisenkot wants Israelis to enjoy their beach vacation in Cyprus. His billboards near Larnaca airport say so directly: "Israelis, enjoy! You deserve it," followed by a second sign on the way home: "Landed? Had fun? Now come back and win!"

A Cypriot MEP is now demanding a ban on foreign election ads, which means Eisenkot has achieved something Netanyahu never managed: uniting Cypriots against Israeli politics.

Back home, the general-turned-candidate has bigger enemies than tourism regulators — namely, his own bloc.

"A reality where a party leader with 8 to 10 seats demands the premiership is not appropriate," Eisenkot said, a line he's repeated for months, most recently aimed squarely at Naftali Bennett.

Translation from campaign-speak: I have more mandates in the polls, so kindly step aside and let the man with the bigger poll number run the country.

Meanwhile, Yashar! just recruited Eliana Sachs, 25, model and social activist from Beer Sheva, who lost her mother and brother to an Iranian missile strike on the city, to run the party's youth wing.

Eisenkot called her "the Israel of today — determined, values-driven, a true blend of action and spirit". Grief, rebranded as campaign strategy, is apparently the fastest-growing sector in Israeli politics this cycle.

And when Ynet's Moran Azoulai pressed him on his own record, Eisenkot didn't dodge — he doubled down: "As chief of staff I said that until the bodies of the fallen are returned, I won't approve bringing in workers from Gaza.
Not one laborer entered from Gaza in all four years I served as chief of staff." A hard line delivered with the confidence of a man who knows exactly how many mandates that kind of sentence is worth in October.

So who's actually running this campaign — the candidate polling ahead of Netanyahu, or the grief, the guilt, and the billboards doing the polling for him?
