📰 Breaking News: Disinformation Dies, Apparently of Natural Causes
So it turns out the greatest threat to American democracy wasn’t China’s deepfakes, Russia’s troll farms, or Iran’s bot networks — it was the analysts tracking them.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has shut down the State Department’s disinformation office, placing 40 employees on leave and sending 80 contractors packing. The logic? These civil servants were, according to Rubio, censoring Americans — though he offered no evidence and didn’t seem to mind when the same office tracked ISIS propaganda ten years ago.
The new man in charge? Darren Beattie — best known for praising white male supremacy and getting fired from the Trump White House over ties to white nationalists. Now he’s rifling through employees’ inboxes to find “evidence of censorship.” If irony were uranium, Beattie would be Iran’s top export.
Meanwhile, Beijing and Moscow must be thrilled. While they continue funding influence campaigns and rewriting global narratives, Washington is debating whether Twitter moderators are the real enemy. It’s not just unilateral disarmament — it’s ideological surrender disguised as populist virtue.

📰 Russia Turns Epstein Files Into a Weapon — Macron Gets Cast as the Villain
Russia is not just reading the Epstein files. It is weaponizing them. After the U.S. Justice Department released 3 million pages, 180,000 images, and 2,000 videos tied to Epstein’s sex‑trafficking network, a Russian bot network code‑named “Matryoshka” seized the moment — flooding X, Telegram, BlueSky, and closed online groups with a tidal wave of fakes that tie Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian children to Epstein’s activities.
Investigators from the Bot Blocker project have traced the campaign: fake accounts masquerading as regional media, think tanks, and ordinary users; synchronized posts; and logos ripped from real outlets like Libération, Le Parisien, France‑24, Reuters, and Gallup to make the content look legit. The stories include videos claiming Ukrainian children were funneled into Epstein’s network after the 2014 protests, doctored quotes from people who never said that bit, and fantasy reports about Macron visiting Epstein Island 18 times while serving as economy minister. None of it holds up to fact‑checking.
The irony is thick: Epstein’s records already contain real, deeply troubling connections — among them Ariane de Rothschild, the close associate of Emmanuel Macron, who appears in Epstein’s documents thousands of times. That is a real thread investigators could follow. Instead, Moscow drowns that reality in a sea of cartoonish smears — Ukrainian “sacrifices,” French “Satanist lobbies,” Macrons visiting private islands more than the French people visit their own beaches.
Russia’s goal here is not truth. It is paralysis. The more Ukrainians and Europeans are forced to defend Macron from absurd Epstein‑linked hoaxes, the more serious questions about the real Epstein‑linked networks get lost in the fog of “everything is propaganda.” Earlier, in May 2025, the Kremlin ran a similar stunt around a crumpled tissue Macron picked up at a summit — turned it into proof of “cocaine,” and pushed it to tens of millions of views. Now, with the Epstein dump, the stakes are higher and the fantasies dirtier.
The real question is not whether Macron visited Epstein’s island 18 times. It is why the same intelligence and fact‑checking tools that spot Russian bots cannot stop the public conversation from collapsing into “it’s all fake” — leaving only the bots standing, still clicking.

Trump’s Election “Bombshell”: Six Years of Hype, Zero Evidence
Trump finally got his primetime stage to “prove” the 2020 election was stolen — and again showed he has nothing new.
For nearly six years he’s teased a smoking gun: changed vote totals, hacked machines, foreign actors flipping the race.
The White House hyped this address as the moment newly declassified intelligence would show tampering.
In the speech, he never claimed a single vote was altered or a single machine compromised; he talked about “vulnerabilities” and let paranoia do the rest.
He said voting systems are “vulnerable” and “easily compromised,” and that elections were “left vulnerable to being rigged and stolen” — softer than his usual “they were rigged and stolen.”
He accused China of “illicitly” acquiring voter files, which in reality are mostly public or commercially available.
The intelligence he released still says what it has said since 2021: no foreign actor altered registrations, ballots, tabulations or results in 2020.
The documents show China collecting voter data and running influence ops, not hacking the vote.
One CIA report says Beijing wanted Trump to lose, another notes Chinese activity around Biden’s campaign, and the overall judgment remains: China did not covertly interfere to sway the outcome. The fine print kills the headline.
He floated a DHS claim about large numbers of non‑citizens on voter rolls in several states, but offered no evidence; similar claims have repeatedly fallen apart under scrutiny.
He padded the speech with boilerplate about the border, Iran, taxes and drug prices, then went back to demanding stricter voter ID and citizenship rules that even Senate Republicans admit they can’t pass.
NBC, ABC and CNN didn’t carry the speech live; Fox and CBS did. Trump responded by demanding that the government revoke the “fraudulent” networks’ licenses — railing against censorship while calling for state punishment of editorial decisions.
Democrats hammered the narrative risk: Sen. Mark Warner warned that the biggest threat to elections now is false stories used at home to convince Americans their system cannot be trusted or to justify federal intervention in rules the Constitution leaves to the states.
The event itself was small: a few dozen loyal officials and insiders in the East Room, applause at the end, then twenty minutes of joking about fraud and the country’s 250th anniversary. Six years after promising the “smoking gun,” Trump is still pointing at smoke and asking the country to pretend it’s proof.

The Corporate Prosecutor
OpenAI says it catches foreign influence operations. Conveniently, it owns the machine they allegedly used, the logs that identify them, the rules that define abuse and the blog where the verdict appears.
When the company says it disrupted a Chinese, Russian, Iranian or Israeli network, the public gets a polished dossier: operation names, selected prompts, a sample of output and a geopolitical label.
What stays inside OpenAI is the evidence that would let anyone test the label: account logs, clustering rules, false-positive rates, alternative explanations and internal dissent.
A platform can ban users from its own product. “This account used our model to write text” is a fact about the platform.
“We uncovered a state-linked influence operation” is a claim about coordination, intent and political purpose.
That claim reaches governments, reporters and researchers without an adversarial process, because the only witness with full access is also the prosecutor.
The business model completes the loop. Generative AI makes phishing, malware, multilingual propaganda and synthetic personas cheaper to produce.
The same companies sell the filters, monitoring and attribution meant to contain them. The more dangerous the information environment becomes, the more indispensable its landlord appears.
OpenAI’s reports may be right. That is not the standard. A private company should not get to turn an internal moderation judgment into geopolitical fact while keeping the underlying record private.
The company supplies the model, measures the abuse and sells the protection.
