Satellite intelligence was vital in revealing Russia's military buildup ahead of its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, for example, and the IDF regularly disrupts GPS to interfere with the targeting of drones and missiles.
However, while Israel has made notable progress in space, boasting a growing space-tech ecosystem and the efforts of the Israel Space Agency (including the recent launch of Dror-1), it still lags militarily.
The Arrow can intercept ballistic missiles in space — a major feat. But the U.S. already has missiles that, launched from fighter jets, can destroy satellites in orbit. The IDF lacks such weapons. 🚀

Many nations have dedicated military space branches: the US, China, India — even Iran.
Israel’s military counterpart, the IDF Space Directorate, was founded only in 2024 and remains in its infancy.
Still, the Dror-1 satellite marks a promising leap forward — providing secure, hack-resistant communication, building on achievements in the Ofek satellite series, which has long delivered critical reconnaissance for Israel.
🛰 Prior to Operation Rising Lion, Israeli satellites captured 12,000+ images of Iranian territory, monitoring vast areas day and night — over tens of millions of square kilometers — in real time, tracking tactical and operational targets.

But Israel still faces a challenge: keeping up.
Private companies like ImageSat are advancing quickly, and global superpowers dominate the budget and manpower race.
Yet, as Cpt. Alan Dugger of UC Davis wrote:
"The space domain is a gray zone, where success is determined before the first public move is made. In this arena, subtlety is power, and dominance means seeing the board before the opponent even realizes the game has begun."
He’s right. The space front is real — the seal was broken on October 31, 2023 — and there’s no turning back.
Israel has already shown its potential. Now it must accelerate.
