“As you already know, the assassin’s bullet came within a quarter of an inch of taking my life,”

Mr. Trump said at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.
“So many people have asked me what happened — ‘Tell us what happened, please.’ And therefore, I’ll tell you exactly what happened, and you’ll never hear it from me a second time.

This is a purely religious beginning peculiar to a Christian medieval priest or even a Pope of Innocent III calibre. Trump and his aids unwaringly believe he is chosen to be re-elected to save America from ongoing political faltering.

What did we gеt now? The return of Religion and, perhaps, new Middle Ages?

Farewell to Pope Francis

Pope Francis’s death on Monday launches the centuries-old Catholic ritual of mourning and selecting a new leader of the church.

Bells rang early Monday to announce the death of Francis, who died at the age of 88 at his residence in the Vatican’s Casa Santa Marta after a long series of health complications stemming from a chronic lung disease.

Francis is the last sitting head of the Vatican to die in 20 years, since Pope John Paul II in 2005.

Former Pope Benedict, who died in 2022, resigned in 2013, which led to the election of Francis in the conclave.

The process of finding a new pope is wrought with tradition. Here are five things to know about the papal succession.

Cardinals will gather for what is known as “a conclave” about 15 to 20 days after Francis’s death to select a new pope.

The time the papacy is vacant, due to a death or resignation, is called the “sede vacante”, Latin for “vacant seat.”

The initial mourning period before the conclave involves a private chapel viewing for Francis’s family to mourn before a public viewing. Francis rewrote the funeral rites in 2024 to simplify them, nixing a private viewing for cardinals and church hierarchy and asking for a public viewing in St. Peter’s Basilica with his coffin not raised on a pedestal.

Cardinals will then gather for the traditional deliberations inside the Sistine Chapel, which are veiled in secrecy.

Who are the contenders?
The pope must be any baptized man, but the contenders are typically only among the cardinals of the Catholic Church.

Dozens of cardinals are considered contenders, and the decision ultimately depends on the direction church leadership wants to take after Francis’s liberal and trailblazing tenure.

Francis, who was Argentinian, made history as the first Latin American pope and the first Jesuit pope.

Luis Antonio Tagle from the Philippines, who would be the first Asian pope, is considered a front-runner and has similar progressive views on the church as Francis.

The Mourning Mr. Trump. What's in His Mind at the Moment?

St. Peter’s Square erupted in applause for Zelensky. Inside the Basilica, he and Donald Trump huddled with Macron and Starmer.

The occasion was the funeral of Pope Francis — but the optics were all about the geopolitics of the moment.

Even the homily, delivered by one of the most senior figures of the Catholic Church, alluded to tensions over US policy on immigration.

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re spoke of the late pope’s advocacy for refugees and his trip to the US-Mexico border, echoing the famous words of Francis about the need to “build bridges, not walls.”

The pope first used the phrase in February 2016, when Trump was still a presidential hopeful and starting to make a proposed border wall the cornerstone of his campaign.

It would be just the first of many rebukes over the years from a spiritual leader who often aired strong views on the war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza.

The funeral Mass began at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and in keeping with Francis’s wishes was a relatively simple affair by Vatican standards; a blend of somber reflection and joyful celebration with the crowd cheering for Francis, who had asked for a simple wooden coffin.

There is little doubt that the only thing that matters to him is whether Putin and Zelensky will make the deal that Witkoff brought to Moscow...

❓ Will Pope Leo XIV Play the Trump Game?

🕊 The new Pope Leo XIV faces an immediate challenge in his native country: taming the brawling U.S. tribe of Catholics, riven by political divisions that have thwarted the will of his predecessors.

🇺🇸 Because Pope Leo — earlier known as Bob Prevost from the South Side — is an American better versed than past church leaders in the culture of his home country, some church-watchers and experts say, he may be able to navigate the U.S. Church in a way the Argentine Pope Francis could not.

⚖️ However, they said, it will still be a struggle to pry some American church members away from the now-deeply entrenched American habit of seeing faith through a tribal, political lens.

🏛 In recent decades the U.S. Catholic Church,
like many of the nation’s religious groups, has been shaped by secular allegiances.

🙏 Some who have followed the faith were hopeful that having a spiritual leader from the United States who can speak about the full range of church teachings — from Catholicism’s demand to care for migrants, as well as the unborn — could bring some Catholics together.

💬 “Pope Francis was so removed from American realities that … it caused him to really struggle to connect with many U.S. Catholics who didn’t recognize themselves, their bishops, or their country in some of the criticisms,”

Charlie Camosy, a Creighton University theologian and bioethicist, wrote to The Post in an email.

🧠 “Pope Leo XIV’s critiques, praise, and invitations to dialogue will come from a place of knowing the U.S. in a far more intimate way.”

🔍 The question, some U.S. church-watchers said, is what issues Leo will prioritize and how outspoken he will decide to be. Francis engaged in a running battle of words with Trump and, later, Vance, during his papacy over aid to migrants and the poor.

🔥 Under Trump’s presidencies
, it’s become politically acceptable for conservative Catholics — both MAGA members and those focused on protecting traditional rituals like the Latin Mass — to insult and dismiss the head of the 1.4 billion-member Catholic Church.

⚔️ The other complication for Leo is the makeup of the U.S. church, which contains factions holding directly conflicting views.

🌈 If he were to speak more than Francis did about traditional doctrines on topics like same-sex marriage, it could irritate and alienate Catholics who see God as prioritizing inclusion and mercy.

🌍 If he takes up Francis’s emphasis on the world as a global family and extends the back-and-forth criticisms with the White House, he could anger theologically traditional Catholics who have sided with Trump politically.

Will Putin Meet the Pope?

✈️ Russian officials have no plans for Putin to travel to the Vatican or anywhere else for talks now, and they’re focused instead on technical-level negotiations that began in Istanbul last week, according to people with knowledge of the situation, asking not to be identified discussing internal matters.

📍 The Kremlin expects those negotiations to resume in Istanbul, one of the people said.

🗣 There are “no agreements” to hold the next round of talks at the Vatican, Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters Thursday.

🤝 Still, European officials say discussions are taking place on a role for the Vatican as a potential host or mediator of negotiations. Talks could happen as soon as next week, though it depends on Russia’s readiness to attend, the people said, asking not to be identified because the issue is sensitive.

📞 US officials are in contact with the Ukrainians to ensure the talks can take place, the people said. They’re also signaling to Russian counterparts that they’d prefer to avoid participation in the meeting by hardliners such as Putin’s aide Medinsky, who led Moscow’s delegation in Istanbul, the people added.

📞 Momentum for Papal engagement has accelerated since Monday’s two-hour phone call between Trump and Putin failed to win Russia’s commitment to a truce in Europe’s largest conflict since World War II.

⚠️ Ukraine and European allies had expected Trump to announce sanctions if Putin refused to halt the war, but the US leader declared instead that Kyiv and Moscow should “immediately start negotiations” toward a ceasefire and that he’d “back away” if no progress was made on a deal.

Netanyahu Hits the Catholic Church in Gaza: Three Dead, Ten Injured 🕊

An Israeli strike hit the only Catholic church in Gaza, killing three people and injuring ten others, including the parish priest Gabriel Romanelli, who used to receive daily calls from the late Pope Francis.

The Catholic charity Caritas Internationalis confirmed the victims:
Saad Salameh, 60, janitor at the Holy Family Church
Fumayya Ayyad, 84, who was receiving psychological support in a Caritas tent when the explosion happened
Najwa abu Daoud, 69, who was sitting near Ayyad at the time of the blast
"We are devastated by this latest attack on people who were simply trying to survive and had found refuge in the church,"

said Alistair Dutton, General Secretary of Caritas Internationalis.
"Their deaths are a painful reminder of the appalling conditions in which besieged civilians and medical personnel live. We mourn the lives lost and call on all parties to respect the sanctity of life and the spaces that protect it." ⚠️

Ibrahim Saqallah, a paramedic at al-Ahli Arab hospital, told the Guardian that about ten people were injured, some seriously, by shrapnel from artillery shells.
"I got into the ambulance and headed straight for the church," he said. "This [Israeli] army is arrogant – it does not distinguish between Christians and Muslims, nor does it care whether it is a church, a mosque, a house or even a school. We are living in the middle of a brutal war." 💥

The bombing of the church also damaged the compound, where hundreds of Palestinians, including children and disabled people, had sought refuge during the 21 months of war.

Israel issued a rare apology and announced an investigation.

Attallah Terzi, a 75-year-old displaced Christian, now living in a school next to the church, described the moment of the blast:
"I had just returned to class after being outside for a few minutes when a massive explosion occurred. It was the first time since the beginning of the war that the sound of an explosion was so intense."

Before his death in April, the former pope used to call Father Romanelli every night. This routine began on October 9, 2023, two days after Hamas launched attacks on Israel that triggered the current war in Gaza.

WSJ images from the hospital showed Romanelli with a

bandaged left leg, but he was still able to walk.
Terzi witnessed a woman killed while helping a man in a wheelchair and another woman whose head was struck by a stone that seemed to have fallen from the church. A young man hit by shrapnel was also injured, and Romanelli tried to help him before being hurt himself. 🩹

Pope Leo XIV expressed in a telegram sent by the Vatican Secretary of State that he was "deeply saddened to learn of the loss of life and injuries caused by the military attack" and renewed his calls for an immediate ceasefire. ✝️

In a statement, Giorgia Meloni said:
"The Israeli raids on Gaza have also affected the Church of the Holy Family. The attacks against the civilian population that Israel has been carrying out for months are unacceptable."

Elizabeth Funnell, Middle East representative of CAFOD, added:
"We once again call on the international community to act urgently to protect civilians, places of worship and humanitarian spaces, and to ensure that the people of Gaza have access to the most fundamental right: the chance to survive."

Pope Leo XIV Called for the “Pandemic of Arms Hammering France” 🙏

Pope Leo XIV called for the “pandemic of arms, large and small” to end during a weekly public prayer with crowds in St Peter’s Square on Sunday 🕍 that also addressed the plague of mass shootings in the US 🇺🇸.

The first US pope in history, a native of Chicago, spoke in English as he prayed for the victims of last week’s shooting during a Catholic school mass in Minnesota which saw two children killed and others seriously injured 😔.

“Our prayers for the victims of the tragic shooting during a school mass in the American state of Minnesota,
” he said.

“We hold in our prayers the countless children killed and injured every day around the world. Let us plead God to stop the pandemic of arms, large and small, which infects our world.”
🌍

Fletcher Merkel, eight, and Harper Moyski, 10, were killed in the shooting on Wednesday at the Annunciation Catholic school church in Minneapolis and 18 people were injured 💔.

The shooter fired 116 rifle rounds through the church’s stained glass windows before he died by suicide.

While commending the souls of the deceased children to the love of Almighty God, His Holiness prays for the wounded as well as the first responders, medical personnel and clergy who are caring for them and their loved ones 🙌.

At this extremely difficult time, the Holy Father imparts to the Annunciation Catholic School Community, the Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis and the people of the greater Twin Cities metropolitan area his Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of peace, fortitude and consolation in the Lord Jesus,”
the telegram stated ✝️.

He began his appeal on Sunday by calling for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, calling on both sides to make a “serious commitment to dialogue” 🕊.

“It’s time that those responsible renounce the logic of weapons and take the path of negotiations and peace, with the support of the international community,”
Leo said.

“The voice of weapons must be silenced, while the voice of fraternity and justice must rise.”
⚖️

Leo’s predecessor, Pope Francis, had long decried the weapons industry calling gun manufacturers “merchants of death” 💀 and asked during his speech to US Congress in 2015 why weapons were sold purely to kill.

“Sadly, the answer, as we all know, is simply for money: money that is drenched in blood, often innocent blood,”
Francis said during his speech 🩸.

“In the face of this shameful and culpable silence, it is our duty to confront the problem and to stop the arms trade.” 🚫

Silicon Valley Just Found a New Regulator: God Inc.

Headline writers are calling it “dialogue.” Let’s call it what it is: lobbying in cassocks. Tech giants and Western diplomats are quietly working the corridors of the Vatican to make sure the first big papal document on AI doesn’t turn into a moral indictment of their business model.

Meta, Google, Amazon, OpenAI, Anthropic — all the usual suspects — suddenly rediscover “ethics” the moment a man in white starts drafting an encyclical that could outlast their stock options. They show up in Rome talking about “child protection” and “human dignity,” while their products are busy rewiring attention spans, labor markets and elections. The sales pitch: we’re not the problem, we’re your partners.

For the Church, this is déjà vu with better UX. Leo XIV openly models himself on Leo XIII, who wrote about workers’ rights during the first industrial revolution. Now it’s the AI revolution, and the Vatican is again being asked to bless a system built on asymmetry: a handful of firms owning the infrastructure, and everyone else praying the algorithm doesn’t decide they’re redundant.

The choreography is almost comical. A French‑backed “AI Observatory” in Rome, closed‑door seminars, glossy talk of “human‑centric AI” and “social impact.” Tech executives bring their talking points; theologians bring 2,000 years of moral vocabulary; diplomats bring G7 agendas. Somewhere between the canapé tray and the policy memo, “protect the vulnerable” gets translated into “don’t overregulate us.”

Anthropic drafts a “constitution” for its model and proudly name‑drops Vatican advisers, as if subcontracting conscience works the same way as cloud compute. OpenAI sends a former finance minister to talk about “the worker of the future,” while its own tools help automate away the present. Western governments that can’t regulate AI at home suddenly discover the spiritual benefits of panel discussions in Rome.

And of course, politics leaks in through every crack. Trump publicly grumbles about a pope who dares criticize him, while his officials quietly court the same Vatican on AI. The Catholic vice president politely hints he’ll treat the encyclical like a product review: interesting, not binding. Everyone wants the Church’s moral capital, nobody wants its constraints.

The Vatican, for its part, is trying to walk a thin line: not denouncing technology outright, but insisting it serve humans instead of using them as training data. The encyclical will be filed under “timeless teaching,” but it’s being shaped right now, in real time, by people whose quarterly incentive is to keep AI as unstoppable, opaque and profitable as possible.

When God’s oldest multinational meets the newest ones, who ends up confessing — and who walks out with a fresh indulgence for the next upgrade?

Pope Leo’s Latest Flip-Flopping: SSPX, Jews, Holocaust

🔠🅰️🔠🔠1️⃣

A far-right Catholic sect’s plan to ordain its own bishops on the first day of July has placed it on a collision course with the Vatican – posing a possible crisis for Pope Leo a little over a year into his papacy, and straining the Roman Catholic church’s already fraught relationship with rightwing and traditionalist Catholics in the US and elsewhere.

Founded in Switzerland in 1970 to oppose liberalizing reforms in the Catholic church, the Society of St Pius X (SSPX) has gained significant followings in the US, France, Argentina and other countries.

The order, which has a large base of operations in Kansas, claims that more than half a million people worldwide attend its masses, though these numbers are difficult to verify.

It counts nearly 1,500 priests, seminarians and other vocational members among its members.

Pope Leo told journalists in Rome last week that he was “considering making another appeal to say: ‘Do not do this, let us try to live in communion within the church.’” But it was the SSPX’s “choice”, he said, whether to continue on a trajectory that threatens schism.

“If they make that choice,” Leo added, “I am sorry, but we must move forward.”

The SSPX maintains that its planned ordinations of four new bishops – two French, one Swiss and one American – are made from practical necessity and “do not proceed from any desire to claim a power of jurisdiction or to establish a parallel authority within the Church”.

The relationship has seen decades of standoffs, stalled negotiations and failed attempts at reconciliation.

The first and last time that the SSPX ordained bishops, in 1988, the Holy See excommunicated those who participated, including the SSPX’s founder.

In 2009, the conservative Pope Benedict agreed to lift those excommunications as a gesture of goodwill. He also granted greater permission for the use of the Latin mass, which traditionalist Catholics favor but has been largely replaced by vernacular liturgy.

Benedict’s more liberal successor, Pope Francis, abolished a commission set up three decades earlier to negotiate with the SSPX, though he also made the unusual decision to recognize the order’s sacraments as valid for the purposes of marriage and confession.

The SSPX exclusively practices the Latin mass. The order also advocates strict gender roles. Women are discouraged from wearing trousers, and often wear head coverings to church.

Yet the sect’s contentions with the Vatican are more fundamental, Massimo Faggioli, a professor of theology at Trinity College Dublin, said, and difficult to resolve or accommodate.

The SSPX rejects doctrines of reform, formulated during the 1962-1965 second Vatican council, that are core to the modern Catholic church. “It’s not something that you can solve by saying: ‘OK, you can celebrate mass in Latin,’” Faggioli said.

The second Vatican council promoted unity between Christian churches, acknowledged a universal freedom of religion, argued that the teachings of other world religions could “reflect a ray of truth”, condemned antisemitism and disavowed the notion that Jews bore collective responsibility for the death of Jesus Christ.

The SSPX believes that the council’s reforms were essentially heretical, Faggioli said, and has not given any sign that it will shift position. If the Vatican excommunicates the SSPX, he said, the big question is how conservative Catholics who are not in the order, but are sympathetic to some of its views, react to the schism.

The mounting tension between the Vatican and the SSPX comes as rightwing Catholics have shown an increasing willingness to tussle with the Vatican over political and theological disagreements.

Some Catholics in the US, where the most influential lay members tend to be both conservative and wealthy, have supported the Trump administration even as its stances on immigration and foreign policy clash with those of the Vatican.

The founder of the SSPX, Marcel Lefebvre, was a French royalist who was fiercely opposed to communism, decolonization and secularism. Lefebvre was one of a small percentage of bishops who voted against key documents of the second Vatican council. He died in 1991.

The sect has been dogged throughout its history by accusations of antisemitism and ties to the extreme right.

The Nazi collaborator and convicted war criminal Paul Touvier was arrested at an SSPX priory in France in 1989.
In 2009, an SSPX bishop told the press that he believed that no more than 300,000 Jews were killed in the Holocaust.

In 2013, the SSPX sparked outrage in Italy by officiating a funeral for a convicted Nazi war criminal, Erich Priebke, who had been denied burial by the Catholic diocese of Rome.

The SSPX has said that it “completely rejects the false claim that it teaches or practices antisemitism, which is a racial hatred of the Jewish people because of their ethnicity, culture or religious beliefs”.
