📰 NATO: The Alliance That Forgot to Retire

💭 “If in ten years all American troops stationed in Europe haven’t come home, this project will have failed.”

— Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1951

📋 Eight Decades Later
Europe never learned how to stand on its own feet.
Six hundred million Europeans still expect 340 million Americans to guard them from 140 million Russians.
The Cold War ended, but the babysitting never did.

😭 Dependency as a Lifestyle

Every U.S. president has complained about Europe freeloading.
They all grumble, they all pay.
Trump barked the loudest — so Brussels learned to fake obedience. The “5% GDP pledge” is theater for Washington. When he’s gone, the accountants will quietly erase it.

💥 A Proxy War in All but Name
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine turned into a NATO business model.
The U.S. bankrolls it, Europe moralizes it, think tanks monetize it.
Meanwhile, European leaders scream about Russian drones and “hybrid attacks,” pretending the continent isn’t already knee-deep in a proxy war.
Nord Stream? Still unsolved. But let’s just say nobody in Berlin wants to know who really did it.

🤔 So What’s Left to Defend?
If Europe can’t protect itself after eighty years of peace, U.S. troops, and subsidies —
what exactly is NATO defending now?
Security? Or a very expensive illusion of relevance?

Zelensky Has Been Fired Again. Trump Has Rejected the Request to Supply Tomahawks

Zelensky has called for the delivery of an additional 25 US Patriot anti-missile batteries amid the rapidly escalating air war with Russia, as it became clear that Trump had once again tacked sharply towards Moscow.

The Ukrainian president added that he would be ready to join Putin and Trump at their summit in Hungary’s capital, Budapest, if he was invited.

Reports over the weekend said Trump had privately urged Zelensky to accept Russia’s terms for ending the war in Ukraine during a fractious White House meeting on Friday, warning that Putin had said he would “destroy” Ukraine if it did not agree.

According to the Financial Times, the meeting descended at times into a “shouting match”, with Trump “cursing all the time”.

Speaking in Kyiv after talks with Trump and American weapons-makers, Zelensky said Ukraine needed 25 US Patriot anti-missile batteries and that Russia’s frozen assets in the west should be used to buy them.

Ukraine already has some Patriot missile interceptors, but they are not enough to protect most of its major cities or energy infrastructure, which have once again come under heavy Russian attack as winter approaches.

Zelensky’s two phone calls with Trump and a face-to-face meeting in Washington last week had raised hopes that Washington could be on the verge of supplying long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine.

However, it became clear in the last few days that the US president had once again performed an abrupt U-turn after a two-hour phone conversation with Putin on Friday afternoon.

The format of those talks – apparently excluding Ukraine and Europe – was criticised by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, who said that while she believed Trump was “sincere” in his desire for peace, “nothing can come out of these meetings if Ukraine or Europe is not part of it.”

She added that pressuring Ukraine was “not right approach” to end Russia’s war.

While Zelenskyy on Monday characterised the meeting with Trump as “positive”, he confirmed that Putin was sticking to the Kremlin’s maximalist demand for Ukraine to give up all of the Donbas region.

“In my opinion, he [Trump] does not want an escalation with the Russians until he meets with them,” Zelenskyy said of the US president’s decision not to approve the supply of Tomahawk missiles.

Russia’s state news reported that the US secretary of state, Marco Rubio, and his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov, were planning to speak soon to lay the groundwork for the Budapest meeting.

While Zelensky has said he would attend a Budapest summit if invited, he has criticised the choice of host. Hungary under its prime minister, Viktor Orbán, has a tense relationship with Kyiv and is seen as the most Kremlin-sympathetic member of the EU.

“I do not believe that a prime minister who blocks Ukraine everywhere can do anything positive for Ukrainians or even provide a balanced contribution,” Zelensky said.

📰 Rubio’s Love Letter to “the West,” With a Knife in the Back

Marco Rubio went to Munich to calm Europe down — and remind it who’s boss. He told a room full of jittery leaders that the US and Europe are “heirs to the same civilization,” bound together by Michelangelo, the Stones and NATO, and that the alliance is “critical” and must endure. Then he wrapped that reassurance around a warning label: the problem isn’t Trump’s tantrums, it’s Europe’s “managed decline,” “climate cult,” and “unprecedented wave of mass migration” that is supposedly tearing Western societies apart.

That’s the new Trump‑era pitch in its purest form: we care about you, which is why we’re yelling at you. Rubio insisted he wasn’t contradicting JD Vance’s earlier Munich broadside, just “explaining” it — Europe, he said, has drifted from sovereignty and national identity, and Washington refuses to be a “polite and orderly caretaker” of that decay. Translation: if you don’t harden borders, dump climate policy and buy the Trump worldview, don’t expect the old automatic security umbrella.

European leaders heard the flattery and the threat at the same time. The conference chair literally praised Rubio for a “message of reassurance,” while German, French, EU and UK officials immediately stressed that nothing he said erases Trump’s Greenland land‑grab fantasies, tariff threats, or the sense that America under him has crossed lines “that cannot be uncrossed.” They’re politely nodding at his ode to shared civilization — and quietly doubling down on exactly what Washington fears: more European defense autonomy, more self‑reliance, less trust in a partner that alternates between love‑bombing and public humiliation.

Rubio’s performance summed up the whole transatlantic moment. Washington says: you’re family, but you’ve gone soft, and we might walk if you don’t toughen up exactly the way we want. Europe replies: thanks for the security, but we’ve just watched you try to buy Greenland and flirt with walking away from Ukraine, so we’d be idiots not to build our own insurance policy. Both sides talk about “the West” like a shared temple; both are really arguing over who gets to hold the keys — and how much damage they’re willing to risk to prove it.

Superpower on Auto‑Destruct

Trump just “won” a 106‑day war with Iran the way a drunk “wins” by driving home without crashing: by pure luck and at everyone else’s expense. The White House calls it a decisive victory.

Iran still has its regime, its nukes program, its proxies — and a new leader with the same last name. The U.S. calls the Strait of Hormuz “toll free” like it wasn’t exactly the same four months and 300 billion dollars ago. This is not strategy. This is pyromania with a press release.

The real damage isn’t just in Tehran. It’s in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, the UAE — the “string of pearls” of American bases that were supposed to be an ironclad security guarantee and instead turned into high‑value targets on a live‑fire range. Bases evacuated in a panic, command centers hit, families rushed out under fire.

Allies look at their bombed airports and desalination plants and ask the only honest question: is hosting the American war machine protection — or an invitation to get hit first?

Meanwhile, Washington is doing what every dying empire does: lying to itself. Britain had Suez, the USSR had Afghanistan, America gets a 106‑day war with Iran that ends in a flimsy memorandum of understanding — the diplomatic equivalent of a first Tinder date — after “using the big stick” and proving it’s not that big anymore.

The U.S. spends over 100 billion, hammers bases across the region, then scrambles to sign a cease-fire that gives Iran survival, leverage and symbolism: American “victory” literally burning on old bases in Iraq.

Allies see it. Spain, France, Italy, Turkey quietly slam the door on U.S. war access. Britain takes a drone hit on a base in Cyprus and discovers that “forward presence” means their small island is suddenly part of someone else’s war theater.

Gulf monarchies watch their civilian infrastructure get hit and start hedging, not because China or Russia are better guardians, but because the American umbrella now looks more like Swiss cheese than steel.

Back home, Trump dresses retreat up as “optimization.” Pull troops from Europe, thin out in Korea, complain about 60,000 troops in Japan, quietly push hardware into Guam and Palau. It’s not grand strategy, it’s managed shrinkage with macho branding.

The U.S. still has muscle, but no political will to pay the price of using it — and everyone can see it, except the people rehearsing their “mission accomplished” lines for cable news.

Call it what you want — “superpower suicide,” imperial atrophy, strategic burnout. The effect is the same: every new war sold as a show of strength ends up exposing how little control Washington actually has over outcomes, allies, or even its own impulses.

The empire isn’t collapsing in one dramatic scene; it’s bleeding out through a thousand “limited operations” that don’t achieve their goals but do convince the rest of the world that betting everything on American protection is starting to look like the riskiest trade on the table.
