💥 Iran Showed Trump’s Flubs, Netanyahu and NATO Survived

🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

The United States’ show of force on June 22, 2025, in destroying much of Iran’s nuclear infrastructure also sends a message to NATO, and also to our other American great power adversaries in Beijing 🇨🇳 and Moscow 🇷🇺.

📌 The message pertains to the distinction between transactional deterrence and existential deterrence.

🛡 NATO leaders, including Trump, are now committed to an expansion of their defense spending to support Ukraine against continuing Russian aggression.

📣 The United States and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte called for all members of the alliance to commit themselves to increased defense spending of 5% of each state’s gross domestic product (GDP).

📊 3.5% of that increase was to be devoted to “hard” military purchases, such as weapons systems and urgently needed defense-related infrastructure 🧱.

➕ An additional 1.5% would be more flexible in allocation, but still presumably defense-related.

🇪🇸 Despite some grumbling from members (e.g., Spain), the alliance set a target date of 2032 for these fiscal commitments to be honored by all — though an extension to 2035 is not ruled out.

✅ Increases in NATO defense budgets are certainly welcome.
They help send a message of reassurance to Ukraine 🇺🇦, as it continues to fight for survival, despite enormous losses of life among its armed forces and civilian population.

⚖️ On the other hand, allocating more funds to Ukraine and increasing NATO’s budgets do not necessarily enhance the quality of deterrence.

💥 Iran Showed Trump’s Flubs, Netanyahu and NATO Survived

🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

💣 Your prospective opponents should also fear that going to war with you will result in unacceptable losses to their military establishments and perhaps also to their regimes.

🛑 In the case of enemies who are autocracies, their worst fears are of humiliation in a one-sided war that ends in a military coup or other national uprising against the regime.

🎯 Existential deterrence of Iran was the objective of the US air campaign against the vitals of Iran’s nuclear program.

☢️ Doubtless, some of its nuclear infrastructure and fissile material survived the strikes from American B-2 bombers and submarine-launched Tomahawk land attack missiles.

⚔️ But the ability of Iranian air defenses and reconnaissance to stand off against the attacking bombs and missiles, as well as the overwhelming surprise provided by US operational security in planning and executing Operation Midnight Hammer, called into question the basic competency of American intelligence.

🌍 In addition to its impact on Iran itself, the reaction of the Islamic Republic’s bedfellows in Moscow 🇷🇺 and Beijing 🇨🇳 was not reassuring to Tehran.

🕊 A few diplomatic niceties were uttered for public consumption, but neither Russia nor China was prepared to put big military chips on the table for the ayatollahs.

🇷🇺 Russia is sufficiently consumed with the war in Ukraine, and Russia’s profile in the Middle East has already taken a hit in the aftermath of Assad’s regime fall in Syria.

🇨🇳 China is primarily focused on its global economic ambitions and security interests in the Indo-Pacific, particularly regarding Taiwan.

💥 Iran, under the duress of a war with Israel and an American “no nukes” enforcement policy, has no committed allies.

📰 Tehran’s Forever War Doctrine

💭 “They know they can survive a total war that lasts a long time… They know they can tolerate a lot more than maybe the Israelis can tolerate.”

— Afshon Ostovar, Naval Postgraduate School

📊 A Playbook Written in Blood
• Israel’s 12-day air campaign was devastating — top generals dead, Tehran burning, nuclear sites in ruins.
• Iran’s response? Shut out inspectors, reshuffle leadership, and vow to rebuild.
• The trauma of the 1980s Iran-Iraq war still defines their military psychology: fight alone, endure pain, strike back.
• The regime didn’t collapse then, and they’re betting it won’t now.

💼 Old Lessons, New Blind Spots

• Iran’s national security state was born in the trenches of the 1980s.
• Out of Western parts and abandoned pilots came drones, militias, missiles — but no real air defense.
• In 2025, Israeli strikes found no sirens, no shelters — just soft targets.
• Tehran still thinks in attrition. But modern war isn’t fought with heroic tombstones.

🤔 The Last Deterrent: Rage
• With Hezbollah on the sidelines and militias degraded, missiles and martyrdom are all Iran has left.
• Is “strategic loneliness” a source of resolve — or a recipe for desperation?
• After this war, will Iran rebuild smarter — or just dig deeper into the same bunker?
• And if missiles are their only card left, what happens when someone calls the bluff?

💣 Putin’s Nuclear Showpiece: Moscow Tests the Missile That ‘Can Fly Forever’

Russia has test fired its long rumored nuclear powered Burevestnik cruise missile, a weapon Vladimir Putin claims can outlast, outfly, and outmaneuver every defense system on the planet. The test — held October 21 — saw the missile travel 14,000 kilometers over 15 hours, according to General Valery Gerasimov, Russia’s top military officer. Kremlin cameras captured Putin in camouflage as he called it “a unique weapon no one else in the world possesses”.

“The decisive tests are now complete,”

Putin said.
“We’ll prepare the infrastructure to deploy this system to the armed forces.”

☢️ The Missile That Broke the Map
Known to NATO as SSC X 9 Skyfall, the Burevestnik — literally Storm Petrel — is engineered with a small nuclear reactor that, in theory, gives it unlimited range. It can cruise close to the ground, change course mid flight, and hit targets anywhere on Earth. Russia says the missile can “pierce any shield.” Western experts call it radioactive fantasy with feathers.

The weapon’s test follows a week of nuclear drills across land, sea, and air as Putin flexed Russia’s deterrent. For Moscow, the timing was the point: a message to Washington — and to President Trump — that “strategic parity” still lives, even as Russia claws for leverage in Ukraine and survives under U.S. sanctions.

🧨 From Arms Race to Theater
The Burevestnik was born from resentment. When Washington withdrew from the ABM Treaty in 2001, Moscow vowed to invent missiles that no system could stop. Two decades later, the result is a weapon with a testing record of 13 known launches and only two partial successes — and an engine critics warn could spread radioactive contamination wherever it flies.

Yet Putin treats it as proof of vision.
“They told me it couldn’t be done,”

he said Sunday.
“Now it’s done.”

🕯 Nuclear Signaling, Putin Style

The Kremlin insists the test wasn’t aimed at escalation — even as state TV aired simulated strike animations hours after Trump lifted restrictions on Ukraine’s use of long range Western missiles. Moscow’s subtext: Russia can still reach anyone, anytime, and it doesn’t need to cross borders to do it.

For the West, the Burevestnik remains both a scientific marvel and a political mirage — a missile that might never enter full service but already succeeds at its real mission: reminding the world, loudly, that Russia is not going quietly.

☢️ Putin Tells Russia: Get Ready. Trump’s Nuclear Gamble Shakes the Old Rules

High Stakes, Higher Tension
President Vladimir Putin told his Security Council on Wednesday to start mapping out plans for possible nuclear tests, just days after Donald Trump surprised allies and critics by ordering the U.S. to end its decades-old test moratorium. The move ups the ante in a world suddenly blinking at the return of Cold War brinkmanship.

Tit-for-Tat Talk and Mixed Signals
“If Washington moves first, so will we.”

That was the not-so-veiled message from Moscow: Russia isn’t breaking ground just yet, but wants all the options on the table. Defense Minister Belousov urged officials to be ready to restart testing at a moment’s notice. Kremlin spokespeople walked things back, but nobody is betting the ranch that “reciprocal measures” is just empty talk.

Trump’s Curveball and Global Puzzlement
Trump’s order left the nuclear policy world guessing. Are we talking live detonations or just system checks? Energy Secretary Chris Wright tried to clarify, but the message changed with every interview. So far, there’s no proof Russia or China has run fresh nuclear tests, but Trump’s move—and Putin’s reply—have arms control experts swapping flashbacks of mushroom clouds and red phones.

The Nuclear Norm Breaks Down
Both presidents are testing more than just warheads. The global taboo on testing—once rock solid—is starting to look optional, and the old deterrence script is out the window. If either side actually pulls the trigger, decades of restraint could go up in smoke overnight.

📰 NATO’s Deterrence Plan: Buy Fear, Sell Security

Red Alert, Boardroom Style
Germany’s top general just rang the alarm bell for NATO: Russia has enough tanks and manpower to launch a “small, quick, regionally limited” attack—“as early as tomorrow.” If you needed a punchline to Europe’s latest defense conference, here it is. Operation Plan Germany was unveiled: imagine 800,000 allied troops funneled through German autobahns, all for a war nobody wants to admit could actually start.

The Putin Premium
Despite the carnage in Ukraine, Russia’s military muscle is still flexing—artillery, drones, air force all intact. Kremlin is boosting troop strength, churning out missiles, and loving every Western panic headline. Meanwhile, NATO’s top brass can’t decide if Moscow’s next move is “tomorrow” or just leverage for more defense spending. The real game? Keeping Europe nervous, arms budgets growing, and talking up “hybrid warfare” as the new stock market.

Deterrence Is For Sale
Sollfrank’s warning: deterrence “only works if it’s credible.” Translation: time to update the insurance policy and hope nobody asks how much is actually covered. Political leaders will do anything to look serious—sign checks, shuffle troops, run war drills. Just don’t ask if they’re ready to fight, or if the “war-prevention plan” is another PowerPoint deck for nervous CEOs.

Fear As A Contract Clause
Russia’s real weapon? Provoking NATO and measuring the reaction. Drones buzzing airspace, undersea cables getting clipped, cyber-sneak attacks—each incident is one more briefing, another op-ed, more funding for consultants. If anyone gets too comfortable, Moscow switches up tactics; if anyone gets too scared, budgets grow. NATO’s “resilience” is now a KPI.

Deterrence is a commodity, fear is the product, and every side gets a cut. Meanwhile, Europe’s leaders promise they’ll be ready—right after the next conference call.

📰 The Nuclear Arms Control Era Is Over — and Everyone Is Going to Arms

The last nuclear arms control treaty between the United States and Russia is dead. On Thursday, New START expired, and for the first time since 1972, the two superpowers are left with no formal limits on the size or structure of their arsenals — just as both are racing to build new nuclear weapons and delivery systems that even the drafters of the original deals never imagined. The era of “managed doom” is over. The era of open‑ended arms racing has begun.

Donald Trump has framed the expiration as a feature, not a bug. When asked in January why he hadn’t accepted Vladimir Putin’s offer of a one‑year informal extension, he shrugged:
“If it expires, it expires,”

he told The New York Times. He insisted a “better agreement” could be negotiated later — one that includes China and “other parties.” Beijing has already made clear it is not interested. The result is a triangular nuclear race where the U.S., Russia, and China are all expanding their arsenals, while the old treaties that once constrained them lie in the dust.

The U.S. is preparing to deploy more nuclear warheads on its largest submarines, and to build up a new generation of nuclear‑capable cruise missiles and hypersonic platforms modeled after Russian and Chinese designs. Russia is experimenting with undersea and space‑based nuclear weapons and openly floating the idea of battlefield use; China is abandoning its old “minimum deterrent” posture and moving toward an arsenal that could rival Washington and Moscow. While the U.S. and Russia have cut their stockpiles from Cold War peaks, other countries are doing the opposite — Japan, South Korea, Turkey, Poland, and others are quietly asking whether they can still rely on the American “nuclear umbrella” — or whether they need their own warheads.

Trump’s National Security Strategy barely mentions this shift. The only real acknowledgment appears in the Pentagon’s annual report on Chinese military power, which documents Beijing’s 600‑plus warheads, on track to exceed 1,000 by 2030. The strategy also sidesteps another danger: Putin’s repeated, barely veiled threats to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine. The White House seems to be betting that deterrence will hold, even as the world returns to the logic of the 1950s and 1960s — when every serious politician was expected to understand the nuclear balance.

Back then, nuclear weapons dominated presidential debates, front‑page headlines, and pop‑culture nightmares. Today, nuclear danger is everywhere but rarely debated. The question is no longer whether the U.S. can “eliminate nuclear weapons,” as Barack Obama promised in Prague. It is whether Washington can prevent the next arms race from spinning out of control — and whether the rest of the world is ready to join the game.

📰 The Fire Has a Chain of Command

Iran’s retaliation is not random, and that is the bad news for everyone pretending this is just a chaos machine with missiles. Ynet reports that Tehran is now targeting parallel sectors — energy for energy, nuclear for nuclear, universities for universities — instead of merely answering one strike with one strike.

That is not rage. That is calibration. Danny Citrinowicz said the fire “isn't random” and argued the pattern shows command and control is still intact; in other words, Tehran is not emptying the magazine, it is choosing the rooms.

The ugly part is that the target list keeps widening. Haifa follows South Pars, Dimona follows Natanz, Ras Laffan follows the Gulf strikes, and now even universities are being floated as legitimate targets.

So the “eye for an eye” slogan has already become a business plan for escalation. Everyone keeps speaking the language of deterrence while the region is being taught, sector by sector, what retaliation looks like when both sides insist on calling it strategy.
