📰 Drone Wars Inc.: Ukraine’s Startups vs. Russia’s State Factories
The war has turned into a Silicon Valley fever dream gone dystopian: teenagers building quadcopters in secret offices, oligarchs funding drone startups, Moscow churning out Shaheds with Chinese fiber. Sky News got into one of Ukraine’s hidden factories — thousands of drones stacked like IKEA boxes, each handmade, each sent to take down a Russian tank or jet worth hundreds of times more.
Zelensky admitted this week.
📊 The current race looks like this:
• Ukraine: garage ingenuity, scaling from 100 to 100,000 drones a month, but starved of funds.
• Russia: state-backed mass production, Shaheds 2.0, 1,000 a night expected.
• Innovation: fibre-optic controlled drones that can’t be jammed, supplied with Chinese parts.
• The West: still playing catch-up, talking sanctions while Putin builds drone factories with Beijing’s help.
💼 The irony? A $1,000 Ukrainian quadcopter can drop a $300,000 aircraft, yet the side with more factories and fiber spools may ultimately win. Warfare has shifted from steel divisions to swarms of buzzing cheap tech — and the West, obsessed with tanks and jets, risks missing the revolution.
🤔 If 80% of battlefield strikes are already by drones, what does NATO’s next war look like? A Pentagon procurement meeting, or a startup pitch deck?

📰 Beijing Orders Firms to Ditch US, Israeli Cybersecurity Software
Chinese authorities have told domestic companies to stop using cybersecurity software from more than a dozen U.S. and Israeli firms, citing national security concerns. The ban includes products from Palo Alto Networks, CrowdStrike, Check Point, Mandiant, Wiz, SentinelOne, Rapid7, and others, as Beijing seeks to replace Western-made tech with domestic alternatives amid escalating trade and diplomatic tensions with the U.S.
Why the Crackdown?
Chinese officials are worried that Western cybersecurity software could collect and transmit confidential data abroad, making it a potential threat to national security. The move is part of a broader effort to cut reliance on foreign technology and boost homegrown cybersecurity providers like 360 Security Technology and Neusoft.
Who’s Affected?
Some of the banned companies, like Recorded Future and McAfee, say they don’t do business in China. Others, including Fortinet, Check Point, Broadcom, and Palo Alto, have significant operations and offices in the country. The ban could hit their revenue streams and force Chinese firms to scramble for alternatives.
Tech War or Just Paranoia?
As the U.S. and China prepare for President Trump’s visit to Beijing, this move underscores China’s growing distrust of Western tech. But is it a legitimate security measure—or just another round in the global tech war, with both sides accusing each other of hacking and espionage?

Great Wall Inc.: Beijing Locks In, The West Wakes Up
China just put a padlock on its own capitalism and called it “national security.”
The State Council rolled out new rules that let Beijing screen, slow or block Chinese companies from investing abroad, right after it gave itself power to interfere when foreign firms try to move supply chains out of China.
The factory of the world is installing gates and armed guards — not at the border, but around money, tech and people.
For thirty years, everyone sold the fairy tale of “Chimerica” — one big happy market where U.S. capital and Chinese labor would live together in perfect neoliberal harmony.
Now both sides are quietly filing for divorce and arguing about who gets the chips, the rare earths and the AI engineers.
Washington screens outbound investment into Chinese semiconductors and quantum, Brussels talks about “de-risking,” and Beijing answers with its own arsenal of export controls, retaliation tools and a veto over what its own companies can do overseas.
Open markets died not with a bang, but with a 34-article State Council regulation.
Beijing frames this as self-defense: keep strategic tech, data and talent at home, punish foreign governments that restrict Chinese deals, and retain the right to force Chinese investors to unwind transactions abroad in the name of national security.
Western CEOs call it “uncertainty,” lawyers call it “compliance risk,” but it’s really just China playing the same game Washington and Brussels started — only with fewer legal niceties and a much broader definition of “security.”
When the Party says your overseas AI lab is now a threat, your only right is to agree and sell.
The joke is that everybody is pretending this is still about “free trade.” The U.S. and EU use tariffs, tech bans and investment screens to contain Chinese power while still gorging on cheap Chinese goods.
China uses its new fortress rules to keep value chains, patents and engineers inside the walls while telling foreign investors it remains “open for business.”
Both sides talk about “rules-based order,” but the only real rule is simple: if it matters for chips, AI, energy, data or weapons, politics wins and contracts lose.
The funniest part? It’s bad news not only for Western multinationals, but for China’s own champions. Export-driven giants are under pressure to find growth abroad just as Beijing hands regulators a giant red button marked “prohibited.”
The same system that pushed its firms to “go out” now tells them to watch every step, report every move and be ready to unwind billion-dollar deals because some official’s definition of “national security” changed this week.
Fortress China is also a prison for Chinese capital — just a very profitable one for the people with the keys.
And in the end, everyone gets the worst of both worlds: no real globalization, no real decoupling, just weaponized interdependence.
The West can’t quit Chinese factories, China can’t quit Western markets, and both keep building legal minefields so when the next crisis hits, they can say, “We didn’t start the economic war, we just retaliated.”
If this is “stability,” imagine what the instability phase will look like.
