Reality Check.

Every year thousands of you tell yourself the same lie, "Next year I'll clear UPSC."

𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐑𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐥 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧

This day recognises the vital role of rural women in food production, biodiversity conservation and environmental protection .

This year’s theme, “ Rural Women Farmers Caring for Mother Nature,” celebrates their contributions to seed conservation, water management and land restoration, while highlighting the need for equal opportunities, access to resources and greater participation in decision-making.

Supreme Court has ruled that conversion from Hinduism to Islam or other non-Hindu religions does not automatically entitle individuals to reservation benefits under the Backward Class category.

Dismissing the Tamil Nadu government’s plea against a Madras High Court verdict, the bench held that a person’s previous caste status does not automatically confer membership in a notified Backward Class community after conversion.

The court also reiterated the legal provisions governing Scheduled Caste status and said that reconversion to Hinduism requires independent verification by competent authorities.

🔆 REVERSE VACCINOLOGY: TOWARDS A UNIVERSAL PNEUMOCOCCAL VACCINE

📍 Why in News?
🟢 British scientists have taken an important first step towards developing a universal pneumococcal vaccine using reverse vaccinology.

🔆 WHAT IS REVERSE VACCINOLOGY?
🟢 A vaccine-discovery approach that begins in silico (computer-based) using a pathogen’s genetic information rather than starting with the pathogen itself in the laboratory.
🟢 Term coined by: Rino Rappuoli in 2000.

🔆 HOW DOES IT WORK?
🟢 Genome Sequencing: Sequence the pathogen’s genome to identify its genes.
🟢 Bioinformatics: Analyse genes to identify those encoding surface proteins.
🟢 Protein Selection: Select accessible proteins with little or no similarity to human proteins.
🟢 Evaluation: Assess protein shape, stability and potential to trigger a strong, lasting immune response.
🟢 Testing: Use laboratory assays or animal studies to assess immune responses and protection.

🔆 KEY FEATURES
🟢 Reduces the time required to identify suitable antigens.
🟢 Useful against pathogens that are difficult to grow in culture.
🟢 Helps identify protective antigens when conventional approaches face challenges.
🟢 May identify proteins shared across different serotypes, supporting broader vaccine coverage.

🟢 Cannot directly identify carbohydrates and other cellular structures not encoded by the genome.

India’s Ramsar site tally reaches 103 🇮🇳🌿

India continues to strengthen its commitment to wetland conservation, with Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh and Sauj Jheel in Uttar Pradesh becoming the latest additions to the list of Ramsar Sites.

📍 Flash Flood in Nepal’s Budhi Gandaki River
🟢 A flash flood struck Gorkha district, Nepal, on 11 October 2026.
🟢 Preliminary investigations by NDRRMA and ICIMOD suggest a landslide temporarily blocked a stream or river channel near Chumchet/Chumchure.
🟢 The natural barrier breached, releasing a destructive torrent of water, mud and boulders despite no significant local rainfall.
🟢 Damage: 45 houses destroyed, 27 partially damaged, two suspension bridges, two motorable bridges and three hydropower projects affected.
🟢 At least five people were reported missing; warnings were issued along the Budhi Gandaki, Trishuli and Narayani river systems.
🟢 Highlights Himalayan risks from unstable slopes, loose sediment and glacial retreat.

📍 First BIMSTEC Home Ministers’ Meeting

📍 Sunil Bharti Mittal Receives France’s Highest Civilian Honour
🟢 Sunil Bharti Mittal, founder and chairman of Bharti Enterprises, received the Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour.
🟢 The honour recognises his contribution to India–France economic relations, telecommunications, digital infrastructure and satellite projects such as Eutelsat.
🟢 The Legion of Honour was established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte.
🟢 Mittal previously received the Padma Bhushan (2007) and an honorary KBE (2024).

📍 INS Mangrol Commissioned
🟢 The third Mahe-class Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft (ASW-SWC) was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 12 October 2026 in Mumbai.
🟢 Built by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi; features over 80% indigenous content.
🟢 Named after Mangrol, a coastal town and fishing harbour in Junagadh district, Gujarat.
🟢 Primary role: detect, track and counter submarine threats in coastal and shallow waters.
🟢 Specifications: approximately 78 metres long, maximum speed 25 knots, range 1,800 nautical miles at 14 knots, and endurance of 14 days.
🟢 Sensors include DRDO Abhay Hull-Mounted Sonar and Low-Frequency Variable Depth Sonar.
🟢 Armament includes RBU-6000 anti-submarine rocket launchers, lightweight torpedoes, Maareech torpedo decoys and naval guns.

📍 IBSAMAR IX
🟢 Ninth trilateral maritime exercise involving India, Brazil and South Africa under the IBSA framework.
🟢 Scheduled for 12–22 October 2026 around Simon’s Town and False Bay, South Africa.
🟢 Theme: “Stronger Together Towards a Shared Future in the Maritime Domain.”
🟢 India is represented by INS Tarkash; Brazil by BNS Barroso.
🟢 South Africa deployed SAS Amatola, SAS King Sekhukhune I, SAS Adam Kok III and submarine SAS Manthatisi.
🟢 Drills include surface, anti-air and anti-submarine warfare, maritime interdiction, anti-piracy, Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS), search and rescue, damage control and firefighting.

🔆 SCIENCE & HEALTH

📍 CERVAVAC Receives WHO Prequalification
🟢 The Serum Institute of India (SII)’s CERVAVAC became India’s first indigenous human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine to receive WHO prequalification.
🟢 Effective date listed by WHO: 25 September 2026.
🟢 A quadrivalent recombinant HPV vaccine targeting types 6, 11, 16 and 18.
🟢 Types 16 and 18 are high-risk strains associated with cervical and other cancers; types 6 and 11 are associated with genital warts.
🟢 Licensed for girls and boys aged 9–26 years.
🟢 WHO prequalification facilitates procurement by UN agencies and international immunisation programmes.

📍 ICMR Centre for High Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research
🟢 ICMR-CHAMP, India’s first dedicated high-altitude health research facility, is being established at Keylong, Lahaul and Spiti, Himachal Pradesh.
🟢 Research areas: hypoxia, acclimatisation, extreme cold, mountain sickness, maternal and newborn health, nutrition, mental health and climate-sensitive diseases.
🟢 Focuses on both military personnel and Himalayan civilian communities.
🟢 Will explore drone-enabled medicine delivery, telemedicine, digital health and real-time public-health surveillance.
