π Superconductivity
π Why in News?
Scientists used pressure quenching technique to increase the temperature required for superconductivity by about 18Β°C at room pressure, moving closer to practical high-temperature superconductors.
π What is Superconductivity?
β Discovered by Dutch physicist Heike Kamerlingh Onnes (1911)
β Property of certain materials to conduct direct current (DC) with zero electrical resistance when cooled below a critical temperature (Tc)
β Tc (Critical Temperature): Temperature at which material becomes superconducting
π Key Properties
β Zero Electrical Resistance: No energy loss during current flow β extremely efficient power transmission
β Meissner Effect: Complete expulsion of magnetic field from inside the superconductor (perfect diamagnetism)
π Applications
β Medical: MRI machines (strong stable magnetic fields)
β Science: Particle accelerators like LHC
β Transport: Maglev trains (magnetic levitation β frictionless movement)
β Energy: High-efficiency power cables & storage
β Technology: Quantum computing & advanced sensors
π Significance of New Research
β‘οΈ Moving towards higher-temperature superconductivity reduces cooling cost
β‘οΈ Enhances feasibility of large-scale real-world applications
