πŸ”† Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)

πŸ“ Why in News?
βœ… With enterprises increasingly adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) has emerged as a key framework for connecting AI models with an organisation’s proprietary knowledge

πŸ”† What is RAG?

βœ… RAG is an AI technique that allows an AI model to retrieve relevant information from an organisation’s private knowledge base before generating an answer
βœ… Unlike conventional AI systems that rely primarily on information learned during training, RAG grounds responses in retrieved documents
βœ… It can also provide source references, improving transparency and reliability

πŸ”† How Does RAG Work?

πŸ“ Phase 1: Building the Knowledge Base
βœ… Company documents such as reports, policy manuals, legal documents, interview transcripts and support tickets are collected
βœ… Documents are divided into smaller meaningful units called chunks
βœ… Each chunk is converted into an embedding vector, a numerical representation capturing its semantic meaning
βœ… Embeddings are stored in a vector database

πŸ“ Phase 2: Answering User Queries
βœ… User’s question is converted into an embedding vector
βœ… The system searches the vector database for semantically similar information
βœ… Relevant document chunks are retrieved and provided to the AI model
βœ… The model generates an answer based on the retrieved information
βœ… Sources can be cited, and some systems may also provide a confidence score

πŸ”† Why is RAG Important?

βœ… Improves factual grounding by connecting AI responses to relevant documents
βœ… Enables AI to work with private and organisation-specific knowledge
βœ… Reduces dependence on the model’s static training data
βœ… Allows organisations to update their knowledge base without necessarily retraining the entire AI model
βœ… Improves traceability and auditability through source references

πŸ”† Applications

πŸ“ Banking & Financial Services
βœ… Compliance officers can retrieve relevant rules from internal policy libraries, reducing manual effort and compliance risks

πŸ“ Healthcare
βœ… Clinical teams can retrieve patient notes and treatment protocols while keeping sensitive information within controlled systems

πŸ“ Legal Services
βœ… Lawyers can search a firm’s case history and precedents using natural-language descriptions of legal situations

πŸ“ Manufacturing
βœ… Engineers can retrieve relevant information from equipment manuals to diagnose failures and identify repair procedures

πŸ”† Prelims Quick Recall

βœ… RAG β†’ Retrieval-Augmented Generation
βœ… Core idea β†’ Retrieve first, generate later
βœ… Knowledge representation β†’ Embedding vectors
βœ… Storage β†’ Vector database
βœ… Retrieval β†’ Semantic similarity rather than only keyword matching
βœ… Key advantage β†’ Grounds AI responses in organisation-specific information

πŸ”† Europe Wildfires: Climate Whiplash, Fire Clouds (PyroCb) & Causes Explained

πŸ“ Why in News?
βœ… Severe wildfires swept across Greece, Spain, France, Portugal, and Italy, destroying vast forest areas and triggering record peacetime evacuations

πŸ”† About Europe’s Wildfires
βœ… Modern European wildfires are becoming more intense, faster, and hotter due to climate change, extreme weather variability, and land-use changes
βœ… Many now evolve into Sixth-Generation Wildfires, capable of creating their own weather systems
βœ… They cause massive carbon emissions, biodiversity loss, and ecological damage

πŸ”† What is Climate Whiplash?
βœ… Refers to rapid shifts between opposite weather extremes within a short period
βœ… Usually involves heavy rainfall followed by prolonged heatwaves and drought
βœ… Excess vegetation produced during wet periods dries rapidly, creating abundant combustible fuel

πŸ”† What are Fire Clouds (Pyrocumulonimbus or PyroCb)?
βœ… PyroCb are fire-generated thunderstorms formed above extremely intense wildfires

πŸ“ Formation
βœ… Extreme heat generates powerful updrafts, carrying smoke, ash, and moisture high into the atmosphere
βœ… Rising air cools and condenses around smoke particles, forming towering PyroCb clouds
βœ… These clouds can produce lightning, strong winds, and localized rainfall
βœ… Lightning from PyroCb can ignite new wildfires, while unpredictable winds make firefighting difficult

πŸ”† Major Causes
βœ… Global warming increases weather extremes
βœ… More frequent heatwaves and droughts
βœ… Rapid vegetation growth during unusually wet periods
βœ… Climate whiplash creates ideal wildfire conditions
βœ… Decline in farming and grazing leads to fuel accumulation
βœ… Long-term fire suppression allows combustible vegetation to build up

πŸ”† Consequences
βœ… Annual economic losses of around €2.5 billion in the European Union
βœ… Destruction of forests, wildlife habitats, and biodiversity
βœ… Increased carbon dioxide emissions, accelerating climate change
βœ… Smoke pollution affecting air quality across large regions
βœ… Large-scale evacuations and threats to public health

πŸ”† Wildfires in India
βœ… Most forest fires are human-induced
βœ… Common causes include agricultural residue burning, collection of forest produce, and accidental fires
βœ… Major hotspots include the Northeast, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, and Himachal Pradesh

πŸ”† Way Forward
βœ… Promote controlled grazing and removal of dry undergrowth
βœ… Develop effective early warning systems and evacuation plans
βœ… Revive sustainable agriculture to reduce land abandonment
βœ… Restore forests using native, fire-resilient species
βœ… Shift from only fire suppression to integrated landscape management

πŸ”† MODEL MAINS Q/A

πŸ“ Q. Examine the major physical and climatic factors behind the recent surge in global wildfires. Evaluate their implications for global food and water security.(10 Marks | 150 Words)

πŸ“ Introduction
Global wildfires are increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change, extreme weather events, and land-use changes. Phenomena such as climate whiplash and Pyrocumulonimbus (PyroCb) have further intensified wildfire risks.

πŸ“ Major Physical & Climatic Factors
βœ… Rising global temperatures causing prolonged heatwaves and droughts
βœ… Climate whiplash, where heavy rainfall is followed by extreme dry conditions
βœ… Accumulation of dry vegetation acting as combustible fuel
βœ… Formation of PyroCb fire clouds, generating lightning and new fires
βœ… Strong winds and low humidity accelerating fire spread
βœ… Land abandonment and inadequate forest management

πŸ“ Implications for Food & Water Security
βœ… Destruction of agricultural land and crop losses
βœ… Soil degradation reducing long-term agricultural productivity
βœ… Damage to watersheds and declining freshwater availability
βœ… Air pollution affecting human health and farm productivity
βœ… Increased greenhouse gas emissions intensifying climate change

πŸ“ Conclusion
Addressing wildfire risks requires climate adaptation, sustainable land management, ecosystem restoration, and early warning systems to safeguard food security, water resources, and ecological resilience.

πŸ”† Royal Indian Navy Mutiny, 1946

πŸ“ Why in News?
βœ… On 18 February 1946, more than 1,000 Indian sailors of the Royal Indian Navy (RIN) went on strike at HMIS Talwar, Bombay, against British rule and discriminatory treatment.
βœ… The uprising rapidly spread to naval establishments across British India and became known as the Royal Indian Navy Mutiny/Uprising of 1946.

πŸ“ Background
βœ… RIN was established in 1934 as a relatively small naval force.
βœ… During World War II, its strength increased from less than 2,000 to nearly 30,000 personnel.
βœ… Post-war plans to reduce the Navy to around 11,000 personnel created insecurity and resentment among Indian sailors.

πŸ“ Major Causes
βœ… Racial discrimination: Unequal treatment by British officers.
βœ… Poor conditions: Complaints regarding food, accommodation and working conditions.
βœ… Pay disparity: Demand for equal pay and allowances with British sailors.
βœ… Nationalist influence: INA trials intensified anti-British sentiments.
βœ… Immediate trigger: At HMIS Talwar, Commander Arthur Frederick King allegedly insulted Indian sailors. Slogans such as β€œQuit India” and β€œDown with the British” were written on the establishment.

πŸ“ Spread of the Uprising
βœ… The strike began on 18 February 1946 and spread rapidly through wireless communication.
βœ… Major centres included Bombay, Karachi, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam and Jamnagar.
βœ… Around 78 ships and 20 shore establishments participated, involving nearly 20,000 personnel.
βœ… A Naval Strike Committee was formed to coordinate the movement.
βœ… Protesters removed British flags and displayed Congress and Muslim League flags, reflecting the broader nationalist character of the uprising.

πŸ“ Major Demands
βœ… Better food and living conditions.
βœ… Equal pay and allowances with British personnel.
βœ… Fair post-service employment opportunities.
βœ… Action against Commander King.
βœ… Fair treatment of INA prisoners.
βœ… Withdrawal of British forces from Indonesia.
βœ… Protection from punitive action for participating in the strike.

πŸ“ Public Support & Repression
βœ… Sections of the public in Bombay, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Madras and Visakhapatnam supported the sailors.
βœ… Students, workers, dock workers and railway workers joined demonstrations.
βœ… British authorities responded with police and military force, including firing on 22 February 1946.

πŸ“ Significance
βœ… Demonstrated that anti-colonial sentiment had penetrated the armed forces, a crucial pillar of British rule.
βœ… The uprising came shortly after the INA trials, intensifying pressure on Britain.
βœ… Signs of unrest and reluctance to suppress the movement in other sections of the armed forces further exposed the weakening reliability of colonial military control.
βœ… It contributed to the growing British realisation that maintaining colonial rule in India was becoming increasingly difficult.
βœ… The mutiny is therefore regarded as an important factor in the final phase of India’s freedom struggle.

🎯 Prelims Hook:
18 February 1946 β†’ HMIS Talwar, Bombay β†’ Naval Strike Committee β†’ ~78 ships + 20 shore establishments β†’ ~20,000 personnel β†’ widespread public support β†’ British repression.
