π ONE LINERS β 31 AUGUST 2026
π INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS & ISSUES
π Javelin Missile Deal with United States
π’ India signed a Letter of Offer and Acceptance (LOA) with the US to procure Javelin anti-tank guided missile systems through the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) route.
π’ Javelin Missile: A medium-range, fire-and-forget anti-tank missile capable of engaging armoured vehicles and fortified positions.
π’ Production: Manufactured by the Javelin Joint Venture of RTX and Lockheed Martin.
π’ Significance: Enhances Indiaβs anti-armour capabilities and deepens defence-industrial ties with the US.
π Key Petrol Supplier to Russia
π’ India emerged as a key supplier of gasoline (petrol) to Russia amid refinery disruptions caused by Ukrainian drone attacks.
π’ Russiaβs seaborne gasoline imports surged to a record 125,000 barrels per day in August 2026.
π’ Indian refiners supplied around 1 million barrels over the previous two months, mainly from the Vadinar refinery of Nayara Energy.
π’ Reason: Attacks caused up to a 70% drop in Russian domestic fuel production.
π’ Other suppliers: Turkey and Morocco.
π Uzbekistanβs Oliy Darajali Doβstlik Order
π’ Uzbekistan conferred its highest state award, the βOliy Darajali Doβstlikβ Order, on PM Narendra Modi.
π’ It was presented by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev during PM Modiβs two-day state visit to Tashkent.
π’ Awarded for strengthening the India-Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership and deepening bilateral ties.
π’ Marks PM Modiβs 36th global honour.
π Iceland on Joining the European Union
π’ Icelandic voters rejected a proposal to resume talks on joining the European Union (EU).
π’ Result: 53% opposed restarting membership negotiations.
π’ Supporters argued that EU membership could lower inflation and interest rates, while adopting the euro could provide greater stability.
π’ Opponents highlighted that Iceland already benefits from the EU Single Market and Schengen Zone without the obligations of full membership.
π ECONOMY
π Devadurga Gold and Copper Exploration
π’ Officials will expedite mineral exploration in the Devadurga gold-copper block secured by SCCL.
π’ Location: Near the Hutti Gold Mines.
π’ A proposed SCCL-Hutti joint venture will combine expertise to boost gold production and adopt advanced technologies.
π’ The Hutti project produces around 2β4 kg of gold per day.
π’ Significance: Aims to reduce import dependence and increase domestic gold production.
π Chipflation
π’ The global AI investment boom has created an acute shortage of memory chips, leading to rising prices of consumer electronics.
π’ Price Rise: CPI data shows a 3β5% increase in electronics prices between January and July 2026.
π’ Mobile phones rose by 4%, ACs by 4.8% and TVs by 3.5%.
π’ Reason: Chipmakers are prioritising advanced AI and data-centre chips, reducing DRAM supply for consumer goods.
π’ DRAM: A type of volatile semiconductor memory used to store data that processors need to access quickly.
π’ Global Impact: Smartphone exports declined by 11%, while the US Producer Price Index for electronic components rose by 28%.
π Four-Laning of 11,000 km Rail Network
π’ Indian Railways plans to four-lane 11,000 km of its high-density network to boost capacity and ease congestion.
π’ Key Routes: Delhi-Howrah, Howrah-Chennai, Chennai-Mumbai, Mumbai-Delhi, Delhi-Chennai, Mumbai-Howrah and Delhi-Guwahati.
π’ These routes form only 16% of the railway network but carry 41% of total rail traffic.
π’ Benefits: Greater flexibility, reduced track pressure and improved passenger and freight movement.
π’ Kavach 4.0: Expanded to 2,490 route km across the Delhi-Mumbai and Delhi-Howrah corridors.
π SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
π Quantum and AI University Campus
π’ Indiaβs first dedicated Quantum and AI University has been approved at Amaravati by the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT).
π’ Focus: Quantum Technologies, Artificial Intelligence, Semiconductors and deep-tech.
π’ Programmes: UG, PG, doctoral, diploma and executive courses in Quantum Computing, AI, Data Science, Semiconductor Fabrication, Chip Design, VLSI and HPC.
π’ The campus will feature smart classrooms, laboratories, hostels, an auditorium and sports facilities, with a 500-bed residential capacity.
π’ Sustainability: Solar power, EV charging and waste-management facilities.
π’ Significance: Strengthens Amaravati as a national hub for quantum, AI, semiconductor and deep-tech innovation.
π MISCELLANEOUS
π National Small Industry Day
π’ Observed on 30 August.
π’ History: Originates from the policy package announced on 30 August 2000; the first convention and awards were held on 30 August 2001 in New Delhi.
π’ Significance: Celebrates the contribution of small-scale industries and MSMEs to the national economy.
π’ MSMEs contribute over 30% of GDP, nearly 45% of exports and employ over 11 crore people.
π International Whale Shark Day 2026
π’ Observed on 30 August to raise awareness about whale shark conservation.
π’ Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) launched the Save the Whale Shark Campaign along the Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep coasts.
π’ Whale Shark (Rhincodon typus): Earthβs largest fish and a keystone species in marine ecosystems.
π’ In India: Found along the entire coast, with the largest aggregation along the Gujarat coast.
