🔆 ONE-LINERS | 22 OCTOBER 2026

🔆 ECONOMY
📍 Index of Core Industries (ICI) – September 2026
🟢 India’s ICI grew by 7.9%, its highest growth since the new data series began in April 2024.
🟢 Iron ore: 18.4%; electricity: 11.4%; coal: 10.7%.
🟢 Refinery products: 10.3%; cement: 9.8%; steel: 4.9%.
🟢 Crude oil contracted by 1.4%, while natural gas declined by 4.6%.
🟢 Fertiliser output fell 11.7%, marking its seventh consecutive month of contraction.
🟢 Growth was supported by strong iron ore production, coal recovery, refinery output and construction-related activity; the low base also contributed.

🔆 ENVIRONMENT & BIODIVERSITY

📍 Two New Marine Fish Species
🟢 Researchers from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI), Marine Biology Regional Centre, Chennai, reported two new marine fish species: a sandperch and an electric ray.
🟢 The research team was led by scientist K. K. Bineesh.
🟢 Specimens were collected by commercial trawlers at depths of 30–80 metres off Chennai, Digha, Visakhapatnam and Kakinada.
🟢 Sandperches feed on crustaceans, polychaetes and juvenile fishes, contributing to demersal food webs.

📍 Chiricahua National Park, USA
🟢 Became the 64th US national park after legislation was signed on 20 October 2026.
🟢 Located in Cochise County, southeastern Arizona, covering approximately 12,025 acres.
🟢 Previously designated Chiricahua National Monument in 1924.
🟢 Known as the “Wonderland of Rocks”, featuring rhyolite spires, hoodoos and balancing rocks formed by volcanic activity around 27 million years ago.
🟢 Its “sky island” ecosystem supports nearly 200 bird species and over 70 mammal species.
🟢 The region is the ancestral homeland of the Chiricahua Apache.

📍 Indonesia’s Wildfire Crisis – 2026
🟢 Satellite estimates indicated over 1.9 million hectares burned by the end of September; hotspot detections reached 1.16 million by 21 October.
🟢 Burned area during January–September was 38% higher than in 2019, the previous worst year in the monitoring record.
🟢 Kalimantan was the worst-affected region, with approximately 684,000 hectares burned.
🟢 Major drivers include drought, low rainfall, El Niño, agricultural clearing and plantation activities.
🟢 Burned land included swamp vegetation (35%), agricultural land (20%), savanna and grassland (20%), and natural forest (4.5%).
🟢 Smoke and haze affected Singapore, Malaysia, Timor-Leste and parts of the Philippines.
🟢 Indonesia deployed around 60,000 personnel and 47 aircraft; Malaysia offered additional aircraft and ground personnel.
🟢 Peatland fires are particularly concerning because they can release substantial carbon and generate persistent smoke.

🔆 HEALTH

📍 First Imported Ebola Bundibugyo Case in Nigeria
🟢 Nigeria confirmed its first imported case of Ebola virus disease caused by the Bundibugyo strain on 20 October 2026.
🟢 The patient was a female diplomat who travelled from Uganda and arrived in Abuja on 3 October.
🟢 The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) confirmed the strain through molecular testing.
🟢 Authorities identified 44 high-risk contacts for monitoring.
🟢 The case was linked to a regional outbreak originating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on 15 May 2026.

📍 Zytorvi (Toripalimab)
🟢 Approved in India for first-line treatment of unresectable advanced, recurrent or metastatic oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).
🟢 ESCC accounts for approximately 80% of oesophageal cancer cases in India.
🟢 Toripalimab is an immune checkpoint inhibitor that blocks the PD-1 receptor, helping reactivate T-cells against tumours.
🟢 Used with cisplatin and paclitaxel chemotherapy.
🟢 In the JUPITER-06 trial, it reduced the risk of disease progression or death by 42%.
🟢 Median overall survival was 17.7 months, compared with 12.9 months with chemotherapy alone.

📍 Measles Outbreak in Bangladesh
🟢 Bangladesh reported over 202,000 suspected cases and 1,147 deaths since mid-March, according to the provided WHO data.
🟢 Children under five accounted for 94% of reported fatalities; around 22,000 cases were laboratory-confirmed.
🟢 Routine measles vaccination coverage fell to 90% for the first dose and 86% for the second dose, below WHO’s 95% target.
🟢 Key factors include vaccination gaps, health-service disruptions, staff shortages, incomplete health data and vaccine hesitancy.
🟢 Sylhet and surrounding areas were among the hardest-hit regions.

🔆 SECURITY
📍 SIMBEX-2026
🟢 The 33rd Singapore–India Maritime Bilateral Exercise is being held from 21–26 October 2026.
🟢 Location: Visakhapatnam (harbour phase) and the Bay of Bengal (sea phase).

🟢 India’s potential advantages include Aadhaar, UPI and the IndiaAI Mission; the report was launched locally by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

🔆 MISCELLANEOUS

📍 Canadian First Nation Uses Data Centre to Preserve Heritage
🟢 Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory, an Indigenous community on Manitoulin Island, Ontario, installed a local micro data centre to preserve cultural records.
🟢 Stores recordings of elders and knowledge keepers speaking the Anishinaabe language.
🟢 Supports Indigenous data sovereignty by moving records from a corporate data centre in Toronto to locally controlled infrastructure.
🟢 Follows OCAP principles: Ownership, Control, Access and Possession, established by First Nations in 1998.

🟢 Seeks a unified framework incorporating all four fundamental forces:
🔹 Gravity
🔹 Electromagnetism
🔹 Strong nuclear force
🔹 Weak nuclear force

📍 Scientific Significance
🟢 Offers a possible framework for understanding particles, gravity and the fundamental nature of the universe.

🔆 UPSC MAINS QUESTION
