Bundesliga”Borussia Dortmund v FC Bayern München”Photo by ANP via Getty ImagesWhat a miss by France Football (are you shocked?).It seems crazy to think that there was any other player under the age of 21, who has been more impactful than Bayern Munich attacker Jamal Musiala.Heck, you could make an argument that if you had to pick someone other than Musiala that is would be Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham. Somehow, though, neither of these two players won the 2022 Kopa Trophy at the Ballon d’Or ceremonies presented by France Football. In fact, the Musiala and Bellingham finished third and fourth respectively behind winner Gavi (FC Barcelona) and runner-up Eduardo Camavinga (Stade Rennais / Real Madrid):The 2022 Kopa Trophy complete ranking! #trophéekopa #ballondor pic.twitter.com/3Eg0xyLHi6— Ballon d'Or #ballondor (@francefootball) October 17, 2022Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch finished tied for sixth (largely for his work at Ajax) with RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol. Borussia Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi (ninth) and Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz (tenth) also had formidable finishes. In other news from the event, Sadio Mané finished second in the Ballon d’Or, but won the Socrates Award. Manuel Neuer finished seventh in the Yashin Award and former Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski won the Müller Award.Oh...and Manchester City won the Club of the Year Award.#BallonDor Club of the Year!!! pic.twitter.com/Xt1YQeEWKJ— Manchester City (@ManCity) October 17, 2022

Germany’s Alexandra Popp — another hero of the Women’s EURO this summer, and Oberdorf’s Wolfsburg teammate as well — made it to #6, while Ada Hegerberg (Norway / Olympique Lyon), the award’s inaugural winner, placed #7.The top-placing USWNT player is Lyon’s Caterina Macario, and the only two NWSL players to make the top 20 were Alex Morgan (San Diego Wave FC) at 13th and Trinity Rodman (Washington Spirit) at 18th.No Bayern Munich player made the top 20 — though perhaps a better run in the Champions League this year (Lyon were eventual champions) will help the cause for the likes of Lina Magull, Georgia Stanway, Lea Schüller, and others!

FBL-AWARD-BALLON D’OR-2022Photo by FRANCK FIFE/AFP via Getty ImagesThe world’s best striker — again.Bittersweet.Robert Lewandowski — now FC Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski — has won France Football’s best striker award, newly christened as the Gerd Müller Trophy, for the second consecutive year. This year, the award was renamed for Bayern Munich's legendary, indomitable goal-scorer Gerd Müller, whose 50-year Bundesliga record — the one nobody thought would ever be touched — Lewandowski himself broke two seasons ago. The striker award itself is new, and Lewandowski has laid singular claim to the title, beating out the likes of Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and Manchester City (by way of Borussia Dortmund)’s Erling Haaland. For now, Lewy is king, and he’s showing no signs of letting up.Of course, Bayern can at least claim some partial credit — Lewandowski’s 2022 resume includes the back-half of Bayern’s 2021/22 season, during which he once again claimed the Bundesliga scoring crown by finishing on 35 goals. But he’s Barça’s man now. And after a whirlwind summer transfer window saga brought him to Spain, he’s shown that La Liga ain’t no thang and is picking up just where he left off.Robert Lewandowski wins the Gerd Muller Award!
Here is his speech on stage #trophéeGerdMuller #ballondor pic.twitter.com/fncWH9sZfR— Ballon d'Or #ballondor (@francefootball) October 17, 2022It’s a great honor for a great player, and a light touch of irony, too. That the award now named for a Bayern player — whose legacy is now so entwined with Lewy’s story — is awarded to Lewy just as he himself trades his long-time Bayern jersey for another is a twist of fate. All the more so that his past and present teams, long-time Champions League nemeses, saw fate bring them together again this year (and to dramatic results). And of course, for Lewy himself, the highest honor eludes him still — even though he 100%, absolutely, definitively should have won it in 2020, when he won the Champions League with Bayern. We haven’t forgotten, and it doesn’t seem he has, either:Lewandowski went there pic.twitter.com/Qvm23CPpHM— ESPN FC (@ESPNFC) October 13, 2022Still, it’s a fitting recognition. Robert Lewandowski — one of the greatest strikers the world has ever seen, synonymous with the modern Bayern era. Congratulations on a well-deserved honor. And personally, I hope he gets that Ballon d’Or someday.

68th Ballon D’Or Photocall At Theatre Du Chatelet In Paris Photo by Marc Piasecki/WireImage Bayern Munich brought home one award... Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane was in Paris to pick up the Gerd Müller trophy, which was presented to him by club legend Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “It’s a privilege to be picking up the Gerd Müller trophy. He was both a club legend and a football legend. So it’s special because it means so much to Bayern. I’m picking up the trophy, but we all earned it together,” Kane told DAZN (via DW Sports and @iMiaSanMia). Ü
Well deserved, @HKane! #BallonDor #MiaSanMia #FCBayern pic.twitter.com/9JNE8TEJVt— FC Bayern (@FCBayernEN) October 28, 2024Kane actually was a co-winner of the award with Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé, who did not attend the ceremony.“It was his personal decision not to be here. We both had a very good season and, like me, he scored 52 goals. It’s a big honour to win this award. You have to ask him why he wasn’t there, but for me it’s an honour to be here tonight in any case,” said Kane. While he surely appreciated winning that award, the Englishman would be lying if he said he did not still have his eyes on the Ballon d’Or. “I think so, yeah. The most important thing is to continue what I’m doing, to continue working hard and scoring goals - to help the team and push FC Bayern Munich to the top level. We have a great squad. I’ll try to help the team by scoring goals to win the big trophies. And hopefully this time next year there will be a different conversation,” said Kane, who finished 10th in the voting.
