There was some thought that Thomas Müller would get a rest or that Benjamin Pavard might be healthy enough to start, but Nagelsmann rode Müller and opted to call Noussair Mazraoui’s number rather than risk further injury to Pavard. Our team to face <a href="https://twitter.com/FCA_World?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">@FCA_World</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/packmas?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#packmas</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/FCAFCB?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#FCAFCB</a> <a href="https://t.co/o3jfywloPP">pic.twitter.com/o3jfywloPP</a>— FC Bayern Munich (@FCBayernEN) <a href="https://twitter.com/FCBayernEN/status/1571112311074463744?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">September 17, 2022</a>The lineup graphic had <a href="https://www.bavarianfootballworks.com">Bayern Munich</a> playing a 4-4-2, which is not all that different than what Nagelsmann’s 4-2-2-2 looks like. Müller and Jamal Musiala were listed as being atop the formation, but how the Bayern Munich attackers interchange almost makes it “position-less football” for those top four positions.Matthijs de Ligt likely saved a goal with a big block in just the 2nd minute of the match. It was pretty clear from the outset that FC Augsburg was going to at least start the game by challenging the Bavarians.FC Augsburg had a ton of energy to start. It was an inspired effort for <em>Die Fuggerstädter</em>.Bayern Munich seemed to have a little trouble matching FC Augsburg’s desire and urgency early in the match. Augsburg was physical, fast, and playing like it was a World Cup final.FC Augsburg goalkeeper Rafał Gikiewicz made an absolutely incredible play to stop Sadio Mané in the 13th minute. There was no in-between once Gikiewicz made the decision rush off his line and challenge Mané. If he didn’t make the play, Mané would have scored.Gikiewicz was throwing out some Yan Sommer vibes, as he had another massive save when he stopped Leroy Sane in the 16th minute. One thing that stood out for Bayern Munich was how quickly it transitioned the ball up the pitch. Nothing was slow…it wasn’t always clean or pretty, but Bayern Munich was attempting to push its pace at FC Augsburg.Florian Niederlechner was a handful for Bayern Munich and ripped a laser at Manuel Neuer, who had to make a tremendous save in the 24th minute.Alphonso Davies was very sloppy when possessing the ball at times and made a few poor decisions.FC Augsburg was relentless in its pursuit of winning balls. There have been games where Bayern Munich’s opponents were mentally defeated prior to taking the pitch. These days, however, it does not seem like Bayern Munich is instill much fear into its Bundesliga opposition.Müller still seems reluctant to shoot.Bayern Munich’s best opportunity of the first half came in the 33rd minute after some great interplay from Müller and Musiala, but the youngster fired wide of the net.Maximilian Bauer nearly headed a ball past Neuer but it barely sailed over the crossbar in the 38th minute, but the play’s genesis started with a poor defensive effort from Musiala on a free…

Most of the players shook it off and regrouped...some others did not.Sadio Mané was one of those who could not pull it together and had a pretty bad night. In hindsight, it might not have been wise to run him back so soon after a Sunday game — and making the trip to Paris for the Ballon d’Or ceremony.Joshua Kimmich, however, eventually adapted to FC Augsburg’s rapid pace early on and settled into dictated play once more. For the game, Kimmich ended up putting in an excellent performance. His midfield mate, Leon Goretzka, was solid as well — just not as impactful on the scoresheet as we have seen in recent matches.Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (27th minute) eventually knotted the game and put in another very strong effort. If Serge Gnabry can get this end product sorted out, he is going to be a dangerous weapon moving forward. Musiala was not quite at his “A-Game” was he was still extremely dangerous and disruptive. With so many players injured and/or recovering, Nagelsmann had his hands tied a bit, but Mané should not have started. The manager has to be better at recognizing that. You have to commend the spirit of FC Augsburg. Sure, they made physical and mental mistakes, but they fought like hell — which made the game extremely enjoyable to watch.Overall, this was a match where Bayern Munich came out a little flat and needed to get punched in the face before it woke up. The team is battered, the pitch was awful, and things just have not been flowing all that well overall for the Bavarians of late. Bayern Munich was able to escape with a 3-2, but it came at a cost — specifically another major injury to a key player. Here are some quick hitters on the match:Let’s take a look at Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI: <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/packmas?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#packmas</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/FCAFCB?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#FCAFCB</a> <a href="https://t.co/Hx46FNvWjg">pic.twitter.com/Hx46FNvWjg</a>— FC Bayern US (@FCBayernUS) <a href="https://twitter.com/FCBayernUS/status/1751235258886820089?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 27, 2024</a>There were not really any surprises for most folks — and maybe I shouldn’t have been surprised — but starting Coman (again) after a string of lackluster performances just shows Tuchel’s stubbornness. Coman, of course, left the game in the first half with an injury and was replaced by Mathys Tel. The pitch lived up to its reputation as terrible. De Ligt’s handball in the 5th minute was sloppy. He needs to be better than that. Bayern Munich was very fortunate in the 12th minute when Elvis Rexhbecaj’s goal was waved off due to a very marginal offside call. I actually think the goal should have counted. I saw the VAR...I still think it was a goal. It just seemed inconsequential...who knows? One player who took advantage of the opportunity to get more run was Aleksandar Pavlović, who scored the first goal of the match for the Bavarians. Pavlović did well on a scramble on a corner. It was impressive to see the youngster handle the frantic play in front of the net so well. Unfortunately, the corner was also the play where Coman tore his MCL.It was not just the goal, however, that was impressive. Pavlović completed 96% of his passes, connected on 4 of 4 long balls, had two tackles, one interception, won 3 of his 7 ground duels, and — most importantly — only lost possession 8 times in 89 minutes (he left with a bad cramp). I’m trying not to get too excited about Pavlović, but he has looked really good so far in his young career. The 19-year-old is just handling himself much differently than some of the other young players that Bayern Munich has used in recent seasons. He kind of reminds me of how smoothly Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies handled the transition to the first team.Pavlović’s partnership with Goretzka was good. Goretzka had an enticing run into the box in the 15th minute that could have easily been a goal. When he wants to be a problem for the opposition, Goretzka has that type of ability. A slew of injuries forced Davies back into the lineup and the Canadian ripped off a spectacular goal in the final minute of stoppage time in the first half. It was mostly impressive because the Canadian did it on his weak foot (which he is not really all that eager to use when shooting). Goretzka had the assist. I just do not love how Musiala is playing as Bayern Munich’s attacking midfielder. I think he is not seeing the field the way he once did and that his skill-set would still be best utilized as a wing. Now, with Kingsley Coman out, there is no reason to not move Musiala back out wide — unless he is demanding to play as an attacking midfielder and the club is scared to move him because of it. Historically, it feel likes a stint at wing has also gotten Musiala going…

Bayern Munich held a public training session today, but there were not many improvements on the status of injured players for the Bavarians. Leon Goretzka did not take part in the practice session due to ongoing back issues and Kingsley Coman is still being bothered by the ailing foot injury that he sustained just before the international break: Public training session at Säbener Straße today. Bayern Munich put out a release on the status of midfielder Aleksandar Pavlović and Manuel Neuer: Aleksandar Pavlović is currently completing an individual rehabilitation program with light running sessions and ball exercises. The 20-year-old midfielder was recently sidelined due to a persistent infection and is now working on his comeback.Meanwhile, Manuel Neuer got back into a more normal program by integrating goalkeeper drills into his session: Manuel Neuer is also making progress in his comeback. On Thursday, the FC Bayern captain was able to complete goalkeeping-specific exercises on the pitch again. FC Augsburg v FC Bayern München - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Getty Images Bayern Munich got the three points it needed... Die Folgen: Bayern’s 3-1 win over FC Augsburg (Bavarian Football Works)Bayern Munich picked up the 3-1 victory, but at what cost?It appears that Jamal Musiala suffered an injury that will likely keep him out of the squad’s match against Inter Milan in the Champions League. That was truly a killer, but there were positives from the performance — especially considering this was not a starting XI that had played much together (and definitely not with the positions that some players were win). Let’s get into it. Here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s start with a look at Vincent Kompany’s starting XI: !
Here’s how we line up against Augsburg. ⚽️#FCAFCB #FCBayern #MiaSanMia pic.twitter.com/a6HeM5uZq1— FC Bayern (@FCBayernEN) April 4, 2025There were very few surprises with the selections. Raphaël Guerreiro, who missed training this week, but was said to be fine, did not start. That gave Josip Stanišić the opportunity to start at left-back. With Leon Goretzka out most of the week and Aleksandar Pavlović still working on a comeback from mono, João Palhinha got the nod in the central midfield. In other not-so-shocking news, Leroy Sané started at left wing over Serge Gnabry. It was interesting, though, to see Kompany pick Kim Min-jae once again, even though the big defender has been battling Achilles tendonitis for months and also suffered through a sickness and a back injury last weekend. As expected, FC Augsburg brought the energy. For anyone who has not seen FC Augsburg play in a while, you might have been surprised to see how committed Die Fuggerstädter are to defending. With that, Bayern munich had a lot of trouble getting anything going. The FC Augsburg press was relentless, especially early on. In the 19th minute, Sané was fed a perfect through-ball, but hit the outside of the next while bearing down the left side of the box. For as much effort as FC Augsburg was putting out, Bayern Munich was playing very tough and would often recover possession within seconds of losing it. Eventually, though, Bayern Munich would crack from expending all of that energy. Off of a free kick, Jeffrey Gouweleeuw sent the ball into Dimitrios Giannoulis and the delivery just evaded the head of a leaping Konrad Laimer. Giannoulis took the touch inside and ripped a shot before Eric Dier could close down on him. Just like that, it was 1-0 in the 30th minute. In the 42nd minute, though, Bayern Munich finally broke through when Sané whipped a pass centrally toward Musiala, where the youngster eventually corralled it and fired a shot past FC Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen (who did actually get a hand on it). While he will likely not be officially credited with an assist, Sané kick-started the play. In the 58th minute, FC Augsburg defender Cedric Zesiger was issued a red card (second yellow) for a challenge, which finally gave Bayern Munich some room to breathe. The ensuing free kick saw Kimmich loft a pass to Michael Olise, who was stationed wide on the right side. Olise then whipped in a cross, which found Harry Kane for a 2-0 lead.In the 87th minute, we saw an all too familiar sight from Sané. After an FC Augsburg corner was headed away brilliantly by Kimmich toward Gnabry, the winger sent a perfect ball to a streaking Sané, who was all alone going in on the goalkeeper. Sané, though, inexplicably put his shot directly into Dahmen. In the first minute of added time, Mergim Berisha returned the favor by getting in by himself and hitting his attempt right at Jonas Urbig. Yikes.Thankfully for Sané, he was (partially) able to atone for the miss by helping create Bayern Munich’s third goal in the third minute of added time. That gave Bayern Munich some cushion with a 3-1 lead. It would have been a big boost for Sané to actually get the goal for himself, but it was ruled an own goal. Overall, this was a good, but costly, win. FC Augsburg is a legitimate squad…
