TSV 1860 München v Bayern München II - 3. LigaPhoto by Alexander Hassenstein/Getty ImagesGreat start to the season.Bayern Munich II, on the search for promotion, was host to VFB Eichstätt for the season opener on a hot Saturday afternoon. Kicking the Regionalliga season off on the right foot was imperative and Bayern II delivered, thumping Eichstätt by a scoreline of 4-0.Bayern II started off well by grabbing a goal in the 13th minute. Lucas Copado bundled his way through to the byline and raked the cross back towards Hyun-ju Lee, who made a late run into the box and, with his 5’5” frame, headed the ball into the back of the net.1/38 ✅

However, Eichstätt reminded Bayern II that they were still in the match when Sebastian Graßl sumptuously redirected a long pass to Fabian Eberle with one touch, only for the latter to fire the ball just over the bar.But no team was able to convert again before half time, leaving the score still delicately balanced at one goal to nil in the Bavarians’ favor. However, that balance would be undone ten minutes into the second half, when Junghan under-hit a pass to a nearby defender. The hard working Lee took full advantage, getting the ball, evading a defender and rolling the ball into the back of the empty net for his second goal of the day. That was a dagger into the heart of Eichstätt and they never really recovered. A goal-line clearance would spare them only briefly, as Metu finally got the third goal with a placed finish into the bottom corner. And in added time, Copado was judged to have been brought down in the box. Getting back up, Copado calmly rolled the penalty past Junghan to complete the 4-0 scoreline. You can watch the highlights of the game at FCBayern.com.Ultimately, it was a very successful match for Bayern II and featured the competitive debuts of Mamin Sanyang, Behar Neziri and Frans Krätzig. And while the table after one matchday is maybe not that important, Bayern II is currently in 1st place. Time will tell if the team can finish the season in that position as well. And all due respect to Eichstätt, but harder tests await.

2018 Winter Olympic Games - Opening CeremonyPhoto by Maddie Meyer/Getty ImagesThe Korean wunderkind will stay in Munich for the foreseeable future.Bayern Munich have signed South Korean talent Hyunju Lee on a permanent deal. The 19-year old midfielder was originally on loan from his home team of Pohang Steelers, one of the most successful clubs in the K-League. He was brought in to play for Bayern’s U-19 team and FC Bayern II in the Regionalliga. So far, he has made a handful of appearances mainly for the latter, and could have made more if not for an unfortunate hand injury.Regardless, though, it seems clear that Bayern recognized his talent early on, considering they added in an option to buy in his loan contract. Now, the club has activated that clause and tied down Lee until 2025.#Lee bleibt!

However, it is still encouraging to see that Bayern has acknowledged Lee’s talent enough to sign him permanently.Bayern’s last recruit from Korea was Wooyeong Jeong, who made his professional debut for Bayern back in 2018 before moving to Freiburg to become a regular. Who knows, maybe Lee can do the same, or better yet, even make a name for himself in Bayern’s first team. Imagine the jersey sales in Korea if that happens…

Lee has also been known to admire Joshua Kimmich, whose previous number he received when he first joined Bayern. As for life in Germany, Lee seems to be enjoying it. “I think I’ll fit in just right when my German improves a bit,” he said. “I was tutored until recently, and now I’m studying German on my own. I have no problems with (communicating in) everyday life.”The last South Korean at Bayern Munich was Wooyeong Jeong (currently with SC Freiburg) before Lee joined the club. Naturally, there were a lot of parallels drawn between the two youngsters. “Some of my Bayern teammates asked me if I know Wooyeong,” said Lee. “They’ve apparently played with him a fair few times. I haven’t met him yet.”Lee is slightly different from Jeong in regards to his position, though. While Jeong plays mainly in the attack, Lee plays a bit deeper in midfield. “Bayern entrusts me with a lot of different positions,” he said. “I’ve played as an 8, a 10, left winger, even defensive midfielder. Coach Martin Demichelis makes me play in various spots. My best position is at the 10.” This isn’t unlike what Julian Nagelsmann did to Lee’s role model Musiala last season.Despite his meteoric rise from Pohang rookie to international Bayern starlet, Lee remains humble. “I haven’t really shown anything to anyone yet,” he admitted. “I think I can pick getting forward and getting out of pressure as my strengths.”As of now, Lee dreams of representing his country at the Olympics, which are quite highly regarded in Korea, more so than in other countries. Winning a medal at the Olympics (or a gold medal at the Asian Games) grants you exemption from the mandatory military service that all healthy Korean males have to go through. Lee, however, still has a long way to go before he thinks about any of that. “I have to show that sparkle that no one else has,” he said. “Thankfully, my teammates treat me really nicely, so I’m fitting in well.”Meanwhile, Lee and Korea’s U-23s drew 1-1 with Uzbekistan in their friendly at Hwaseong Sports Town Stadium (which is located right in the home city of this writer). Having been battered all game, Korea had to rely on a late free kick equalizer to salvage a point, mostly due to a coach who is clearly out of his depth(sound familiar?).

The young midfielder played 23 games for Bayern over the past 12 months, and is currently the joint-second highest scorer (along with Timo Kern) for Bayern II in the Regionalliga with eight goals and two assists.Judging from his performances, it seems Lee has seamlessly transitioned to life in Munich. Of course, it wasn’t too easy at first. “ Everyone at Bayern was very friendly and open to me, but I really missed my family, my friends, the food and just my culture,” he said.Of course, that is very understandable. Frans played completely convincingly at left-back in the last few games, an unusual position for him, and Leon has also repeatedly shown his potential in his games. We are glad that they will take the next steps in their development with us and are eagerly anticipating their subsequent journey.”Krätzig, normally a starting central midfielder, has indeed played left-back for the full 90 minutes of his last three games for Bayern II. Not unrelated to Krätzig’s position, Fust was the starting left-back for Bayern II in late September and early October, but recently has been unavailable because of a lingering knee injury.

Donato/FC Bayern via Getty Images Bayern Munich will be shorthanded against RB Leipzig. Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel addressed his team’s injury situation during his press conference ahead of its Bundesliga match against RB Leipzig. As expected, there was not much good news to spread. “Kingsley Coman, Sacha Boey, Noussair Mazraoui, Bouna Sarr, Serge Gnabry and Alphonso Davies are still out. Dayot Upamecano is suspended. Konrad Laimer will return to the squad,” said Tuchel (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “We’ve trained well. The interaction is characterised by respect and always based on expectations of the athlete and the person in the dressing room. If there was a rift, someone else would be sitting here today. The decision has removed a disruptive factor, an excuse, but not much has changed in terms of match preparation. I won’t let up one percent.”Davies, Gnabry work individuallyAlphonso Davies and Serge Gnabry took part in individual workouts, which was a bad sign for Davies’ chances to play against RB Leipzig. As noted in the opening segment of this report, Tuchel confirmed Davies was, indeed, out for the game. FC Bayern Munich Portraits Photo by P. Schreiber/FC Bayern via Getty Images The young defender is off to prove his mettle in Switzerland... Bayern Munich might not be lighting up the world during this transfer window for the first team, but the club is doing some excellent work with several of its top prospects — including recent USMNT U-20 squad call-up Grayson Dettoni. The club announced a contract extension and subsequent loan deal on Tuesday via its website: FC Bayern has prematurely extended the contract with amateur central defender Grayson Dettoni (19) until June 2028. At the same time, the US-born player will be loaned to Swiss record champions Grasshopper Club Zurich. At the current tenth-placed team in the Swiss Super League, Dettoni is expected to take the next step in his development and gain match practice in a first division.Dettoni came to the campus in the summer of 2017 at the age of twelve from TSV 1860 and has since played in all of FCB’s youth teams. In the current season, he has played 19 games for the amateurs, 17 of them for the full 90 minutes. In total, he has played 36 times in the Regionalliga Bayern. At Grasshoppers, he will also meet a former teammate, Nestory Irankunda.Bayern Munich director of youth development and campus Jochen Sauer was excited to get the deal done on both fronts for Dettoni. “Grayson is a good example of how a talented player can develop with regular playing time in men’s football. He was a regular and top performer in our amateur team, and now he’s getting the chance to play with a first division team in Zurich. We believe in his potential and will support him very intensively there,” said Sauer. Viel Erfolg in der Schweiz, Grayson!

On Tuesday, word broke that Bayern Munich was on the verge of signing Sandhausen striker Richard Meier and by Wednesday the deal was made official.“When I received the request, I didn’t have to think twice. I’ve been a Bayern fan since childhood; my first jersey was from Thomas Müller, and my bed linen was from Luca Toni . It was always my big dream to one day play for my favorite club. I can hardly wait to get started on Säbener Straße in the coming weeks,” Meier told FCBayern.com. “I’ve been a Bayern fan since childhood. I don’t waste time in the box and I’m quick to score. I’m also very ambitious. I want to take responsibility and subordinate everything to the team’s success,” said Meier. “I want to help the team with my qualities, score many goals, and thus contribute to the best possible sporting success. But my initial goal is to settle into the team as quickly as possible and get to know everyone.”The move will be an adjustment, though, as Meier is not familiar with any of his new teammates. “No, not yet. Of course, that’s a bit challenging, since I don’t have a traditional support person yet. But I’m a very open and communicative person, so I’m not worried about that. I’m sure the team and the coaching staff will make it very easy for me,” Meier remarked. Looking for some final thoughts on the Florian Wirtz saga?
