After a humiliating loss to Werder Bremen over the weekend, the Bavarians needed to turn around quickly and face a desperate Union Berlin side that would have been perfectly fine if it had to walk out of the Allianz Arena with a point. Thanks to a timely Bayern Munich goal at the start of the second half, that did not happen. Let’s take a look at some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s start out with a look at Thomas Tuchel’s starting XI selection: @fcunion_en#packmas #FCBFCU pic.twitter.com/9damkd66Y1— FC Bayern Munich (@FCBayernEN) January 24, 2024The big change from the weekend was Leon Goretzka for Alphonso Davies with Raphaël Guerreiro dropping back to play left-back and Goretzka assuming his normal role in the central midfield. It is hard to argue against those moves after Sunday’s debacle against Werder Bremen. However, it is curious as to why Kingsley Coman got another start on a quick turnaround, while Thomas Müller — who was effective in his recent starts — took a seat on the bench. Coman went 0 for 9 on his cross attempts. While he was solid otherwise, it is becoming harder and harder to justify keeping him in as a starter. Whatever the case, Bayern Munich rolled with that and put forth a pretty statistically dominant first half, only to come away goalless. Bayern Munich held advantages in possession (74%/26%), shots (15/2), shots on target (6/0), and corners (7/0) just to name a few. It was not that Bayern Munich was lifeless or lethargic, it just was not overly sharp in the final third. The scariest part of the first half was a head collision between Dayot Upamecano and Kevin Volland. Volland was clearly not right and was eventually removed in the 26th minute. Upamecano pulled up lame after the Volland incident as well, which led to Eric Dier making his debut to start the second half. Dier was solid and handled himself well in his first match with Bayern Munich. On a side note, Tuchel is wearing Upamecano and Matthijs de Ligt down. It has just been too much. Admittedly, it was tough with De Ligt also hurt and Josip Stanišić (though not a true center-back, he is a capable fill-in) on loan, but the squad planning at that position left a lot to be desired. For as much as some folks bemoaned the move for Dier, Bayern Munich needs him now. All of those chances missed in the first half, quickly translated into a goal in the first minute of the second half, when Guerreiro picked up the long rebound from a Kane attempt that hit the post and deposited the ball past Union Berlin goalkeeper Frederik Rønnow. Despite the goal, it was not an overly comfortable feeling with the Bavarians holding a one-goal lead. It felt like Union Berlin was content to play a “bend, but don’t break” style, but Bayern Munich was too talented to be held back. One thing that the style did cause was a somewhat boring affair with Bayern Munich not being able to really find Kane in the box or have someone else step up to score. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka…

FC Bayern Muenchen Training Session And Press Conference - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 League Phase MD3 Photo by M. Donato/FC Bayern via Getty Images Bayern Munich is prepping to face Union Berlin... According to a report from Bild (as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Bayern Munich defender Hiroki Ito continues to make progress in his rehab. However, the Bavarians are taking a very conservative approach with Ito’s return. After the Japanese defender suffered a setback two weeks ago, Bayern Munich wants to play it safe with a player, who could have a key role on the backline upon his return: Hiroki Itō completed an individual session, including exercises with the ball, alongside rehab coach Simon Martinello who was regularly monitoring the player’s performances through a tablet. Bayern are very cautious with the Japanese defender and doing everything to prevent another setback in his rehab.Aside of Ito, Sky Sport journalist Kerry Hau checked in with an update on Dayot Upamecano:Während die in Mainz eingesetzten Bayern-Spieler indoor ein Regenerationsprogramm abspulen, arbeiten Dayot Upamecano und Hiroki Ito auf dem Rasen an ihren Comebacks. FC Bayern München v 1. FC Union Berlin - Bundesliga Photo by Sebastian Widmann/Getty Images What a performance from Bayern Munich! Die Folgen: Bayern’s 3-0 win over Union Berlin (Bavarian Football Works)In a matchup that was supposed to pit the Bundesliga’s premier attack vs. the stingiest defense, Bayern Munich pounded Union Berlin into submission for a 3-0 victory. It was yet another impressive blowout of an inferior side for the Bavarians, but fans are already looking toward Wednesday when the Bavarians will take on Benfica in the Champions League. Another litmus test awaits, but — in the meantime — let’s talk about Bayern Munich’s convincing win over Union Berlin. Here are some quick hitters on the match: As always, let’s begin with the starting lineup: #FCBFCU #MiaSanMia #FCBayern pic.twitter.com/Z5g1A3Xhye— FC Bayern (@FCBayernEN) November 2, 2024I think I’m beginning to get a bead on Vincent Kompany’s thought process. It is starting to become clear that he prefers certain combinations with his wingers and that he is completely undecided about his right-backs at the moment. Either way, this lineup sets the stage for who will start Wednesday against Benfica in the Champions League. If anything, Raphaël Guerreiro, Michael Olise, and Kingsley Coman all helped themselves with their efforts during the match. As expected, Union Berlin was intent on making the game a grind (as they should have). Bayern Munich dominated possession early, but there was a true sense of urgency in defending for Die Eisernen. Eventually, though, Bayern Munich would find a way to slither through the low block. Michael Olise drew a foul just inside the box and Harry Kane powered the PK attempt into the corner for a 1-0 lead. That goal broke Union Berlin’s resolve and you could almost feel the Bavarians take over complete control of the match. After Bayern Munich scored, it was almost as if Union Berlin knew it had no chance. Kane was not done with that PK, though, as he set up Kingsley Coman to make it 2-0 in the 43rd minute. Guerreiro got the scoring going in the second half when he sent in a ball from the right side that found Coman on the far post, who headed a ball across the box to Kane, who volleyed it into the net for what would be an insurmountable 3-0 lead for the Bavarians. A subplot to the goal was Jamal Musiala almost snaking it from Kane as he ran into Coman’s header. The duo surely had a laugh over it after Kane was awarded the goal. It is not anything worth being considered as alarming, but it does feel like Joshua Kimmich and João Palhinha are working on their chemistry in the center of the park. Both had fine individual games, but they will need to be more connected moving forward. Regardless, Union Berlin had no answers offensively. Once Union Berlin defensive wall was breached, there was no coming back for Die Eisernen.Interestingly, as more stories leak about Bayern Munich waiting to get rid of Leon Goretzka, the more Vincent Kompany keeps playing him. Goretzka, Eric Dier, and Leroy Sané all entered the match in the 69th minute. In the 80th minute, Adam Aznou checked in to make his Bundesliga debut. The post-Alphonso Davies contingency planning might be underway. Speaking of Davies, the backline — as a whole — was very solid...unchallenged...but very solid. We know that Bayern Munich’s defenders can physically impose their will on weaker opponents, but now they had to work as a unit to try and do the same against the better teams that they will face. That said, great effort nonetheless for the defenders. Overall, Bayern Munich dominated from the outset and Union Berlin was just not strong enough or disciplined enough defensively to hold off Kane and the rest of the attackers from Die Roten. As it should have, Bayern Munich easily put away a team that is not quite ready for primetime. How will that translate to Wednesday in the UCL? It is only a few more days until we find out.
