Spain v Germany: Group E - FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022Photo by Richard Sellers/Getty ImagesFailure can eventually breed excellence. It was almost too perfect.Germany was desperate and things had not looked great for just about the entire World Cup match against Spain.Then...it happened. That it was a freak occurrence where Jamal Musiala had perfectly timed a run and was slid a perfect pass that actually connected (no easy task for Die Mannschaft these days). The Germany wunderkind was left all alone:Missed this one pic.twitter.com/JUQJLJdyUp— Thee Billionaire (@that_guy_evans) November 27, 2022And he bricked...badly.Musiala had two options:Take the shot (ideally just better than the one he ultimately did).Slide a pass to a wide open Niclas Füllkrug, who was streaking ahead of his defender to the net for a tap-in.The safe option (#2) would have ensured Germany would still be alive with a string chance to advance heading into the Costa Rica match. Choosing #1, however, ensured nothing and could have become the one moment in this tournament where the squad’s World Cup hopes completely unraveled.Musiala chose to shoot and let loose with an attempt that saw far too much of Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón and not nearly enough of the back of the net.For one of the few times in his young career, Musiala had failed to do the right thing — or at least convert a high-percentage chance — in a big moment. Despite his youth, Musiala assessed the play like a veteran.“I have to score that or raise my head and pass. It’s going to be a difficult night for me,” Musiala told Sport1’s Kerry Hau (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).Indeed, the wunderkind — who has been such a force for Bayern Munich — has struggled at times on the world’s biggest stage. The youngster can, however, take solace in the fact that he has done some really good things for Germany (as evidenced by this tweet from @iMiaSanMia):Jamal Musiala has created the most chances and completed the most dribbles for #GER at the #FIFAWorldCup so far [Opta] pic.twitter.com/Otp40AZ3q0— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) November 27, 2022Luckily for Musiala, though, there is one more game and with a standout performance, he can help power Germany to the next round...something that did not seem all that like even just a few days ago.Interested in a VERY in-depth review of Germany’s 1-1 draw with Spain? For roughly 70 minutes, it appeared that this would end up as a lost cause, but the final 20 minutes proved eventful — and show that Germany still have the ability to dig deep and rally when it needs to.A draw isn’t a win, but it was good enough for this game. Here are some quick hitters on the match:The lineup went as anticipated with Hansi Flick opting for a 4-3-3 with Thomas Müller operating as the No. 9 (Hint: It did not work):Your #GER line-up to face #ESP#FIFAWorldCup #ESPGER pic.twitter.com/63bjSvs5yI— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) November 27, 2022You could absolutely rant about this formation and the pieces within it, but Flick is literally spit-balling things right now. He tried some things...much of it didn’t work...now he will adapt again against Costa Rica.Spain was in control early, but Germany did seem to have a lot more jump in their step for this match. That was refreshing to see.In the 10th minute, Germany had a terrific opportunity, but no chances generated because Serge Gnabry went offside. İlkay Gündoğan has a nifty little flick to a hard-charging Leon Goretzka, but the Bayern Munich midfielder held on the the ball a smidge too long and Gnabry couldn’t hold his run any longer.Speaking of Gündoğan, I think it’s time to send him back to the bench. He does a lot of things...okay, but nothing great at this point.I think this was the first time I really saw Flick looked stressed. He looked beaten by this experience. That fire and constant real-time analysis that we saw during his Bayern Munich tenure was not there. This has to extremely maddening for him as he cannot seem to push the right buttons for this group (most of the time). In the 25th minute Germany had a crazy sequence where they had a few chances to make something happen, but Gündoğan inexplicably did not make a run to crash toward the net. Had he done that, he could have had a good chance to run into Gnabry’s wide shot attempt.Just a minute later, Manuel Neuer had a really baffling turnover, but David Raum bailed him out. It was a total “yikes” moment. Raum is a talent, but right now, Germany does not need his particular skill-set. I think we could see Christian Günter get his first start of the tournament. In the 40th minute, it looked like Joshua Kimmich had a perfectly-placed free kick on to the head of Antonio Rüdiger, who was centimeters offside in the end.Rüdiger has been very good in the World Cup so far.Gnabry was bad in key situations. He looked great right before he left Bayern Munich for the Germany camp, but has not been effective so far in the World Cup.In fact, Germany’s attack continued to be completely toothless and non-threatening.In the 62nd minute, Álvaro Morata, who had only been…

Spain v Germany: Group E - FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022Photo by Pablo Morano/BSR Agency/Getty ImagesHow to stop being at sixes and sevens? Get a gr8 number nine!Werder Bremen forward Niclas Füllkrug proved Germany’s unlikely savior in the closing phase of a World Cup contest against Spain in which everything was on the line. Or, depending on how you look at it, he was the most likely of them all.“That’s why he’s on the pitch,” Germany coach Hansi Flick raved after the match (via @iMiaSanMia). “He scored 10 goals in the Bundesliga. The determination with which he finishes his chances was good and crucial for us today.”#ESPGER #FIFAWorldCup pic.twitter.com/rx405DhIKY— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) November 27, 2022Füllkrug isn’t exactly to Germany what Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting is to Bayern Munich. While Choupo-Moting is a dynamic winger-forward — touted by manager Julian Nagelsmann as “more of a No. 10”, even — Füllkrug is a classic box striker and that’s that.In Hansi Flick’s high octane system, Füllkrug is perhaps not the most natural fit. But without Timo Werner, Flick’s preferred strike option isn’t available for the tournament, either. And as the game wore on, it looked more and more like that one singular dimension was all that was required — and it was.Füllkrug’s goal was grabbed with serious conviction, the striker charging in to collect a loose ball off the foot of Jamal Musiala. Where Musiala himself missed the chance to slide it across to him earlier, Füllkrug made no mistake in lashing his shot past Spanish keeper Unai Simón.In that sense, he’s exactly like Bayern’s Le Choup. A man who will be clinical and ruthless with his shots, and instill fear in the hearts of the opposition defense. In the box, Bayern’s attacking group have already learned how to look for a player like that. Will that same dynamic be Germany’s salvation in this tournament?Interested in a VERY in-depth review of Germany’s 1-1 draw with Spain? Then why not check out the latest episode of our podcast? Let’s get into it...here are some quick hitters on the match:While the game was a win, seeing the starting lineup was a gut punch. Thomas Müller is an all-time great player, but in this tournament — coming off of an injury — he was cooked. In addition — and I will acknowledge that none of this matters because Japan beat Spain — Hansi Flick’s insistence on sticking with İlkay Gündoğan set the tone for a flat start. Those were two players who brought little-to-nothing to the table in the tourney:Your #GER line-up to face #CRC#FIFAWorldCup #CRCGER pic.twitter.com/gF06duuWyT— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) December 1, 2022Again, Germany was eliminated on Match Day 1 when Flick’s loyalty to Müller led him to ignore the fact that the Raumdeuter was not ready after an injury and really had nothing to offer the team. Müller may or may not be done...we will see how things look at Bayern Munich, but he clearly had nothing valuable to offer the team in this tournament. Niclas Füllkrug was the best option available and not starting him in any of the three games will go down as a huge gaffe for Flick. Müller just did not look like himself...and it was very concerning. The most stunning part of this tournament is that when given the chance, Flick morphed into 2018/2019 Joachim Löw with absolutely no provocation.Antonio Rüdiger was pretty terrible after having two strong games. It is no longer appropriate to say that Jamal Musiala will be a beast...he’s already there. That said, he needs to improve his finishing. It feels like he could have walked away with four goals against Costa Rica.I thought David Raum, Joshua Kimmich, and Lukas Klostermann turned in admirable performances at the outside-back positions.Kai Havertz came on to score two goals and it was insinuated on the broadcast that Havertz’s poor showing in game one and subsequent game two benching had nothing to do with performance, but with an illness. Whatever the case, Havertz did well against Costa Rica — it was just too little, too late.Where do things go from here? It feels like Flick might not stick around after the next Euros and the core of the team will be in their early 30s by the next World Cup. Clearly, to avoid what has happened in both 2018 and 2022, Germany has to make changes.Spain getting exposed for what it really is only made this loss more fitting for Germany. What a mess...I am still stunned.Overall, this was an out-and-out debacle. From poor coaching decisions to consistently underachieving performances from the players, this was arguably worse than 2018. Beating Costa Rica is nice...drawing with a good (but not great Spain squad) was decent...but coughing up a lead and subsequently losing to Japan will go down in the annals of German national team football as perhaps the most costly loss ever.If you missed our…

According to a report out of Italy, Los Blancos have an affinity for the Germany international and want to bring him to Spain:La Liga champions Real Madrid reportedly want to sign 26-year-old German international Leroy Sane from Bayern Munich next year.According to a report by Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web, Leroy Sane is the subject of interest from Real Madrid. The reigning La Liga champions want to sign the 26-year-old German international from Bayern Munich next year. However, with Eden Hazard likely to leave, Real Madrid might need to sign a wide attacker. Several players have thus emerged on the Spanish club’s radar, with Sane also being a viable target. But Bayern Munich will likely fight tooth and nail to keep hold of the 26-year-old German international. Sane is starting to stamp his authority at the Allianz Arena. So it will be surprising if he leaves Die Roten next year. Meanwhile, the former Manchester City man is not the only Bayern Munich player on Real Madrid’s radar. It is extremely unlikely that Bayern Munich will part ways with Sané given his importance to the squad. Matthijs de Ligt and the Netherlands will be facing an exciting USA team, while Josip Stanisic (Croatia) and Noussair Mazraoui (Morocco) take on Japan and Spain respectively.BFW quick take:I will of course be supporting all the teams that have Bayern players in them, especially Croatia and Morocco because I want Bayern to have the last laugh — and for Japan and Spain to pay for what they did their match in the group stage. I’ll be backing South Korea as well because after what Japan did, I’m willing to forget how that 2018 campaign ended for Germany.Who’ll win the whole thing? However, Bayern Munich, another who were interested in the summer, are hoping to take advantage of Barcelona’s financial mess. And the report claims the ex-Ajax star would be “tempted” by a switch to the Bundesliga. Meanwhile, Bayern are “convinced” that Barcelona might be forced to sell next summer, with another year off his contract likely to make for a more reasonable price. It sounds...ridiculous, but humor me. What if Julian Nagelsmann is toying with a move to a 4-3-3? Argentina v France: Final - FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022Photo by Amin Mohammad Jamali/Getty ImagesAfter an astounding match Argentina become World Cup champions. In what will surely become a match for the ages, Argentina has beaten France in penalty shooutouts (4-2) to clinch their third World Cup. The first half saw Argentina dominating the game, leading 2-0 after 36 minutes, while the French team did not seem to find a way to create chances.Argentina looked set to win the match comfortably having a two-goal lead, before falling apart in the final minutes of the second half. Mbappé converted a penalty in the 80th minute, before scoring again a minute later to tie the match and send it to extra time.It had already been a thrilling clash between the two best teams in world football, and extra time just added to the mix. Lionel Messi’s effort in the 108th minute was awarded a goal after what must have been an eternity for Argentinian fans who were anxiously waiting for the VAR review. The emotions would not end there, though, as France was awarded a penalty after a handball, which would later be converted by Kylian Mbappé, the PSG player getting a hat-trick in the process. After an astounding last minute save by Damián “Dibu” Martínez, the game was to be decided in a good ol’ nerve-wracking penalty shootout. Argentina eventually won 4-2, after 2 failed attempts by Bayern Munich’s Kingsley Coman and Real Madrid’s Aurélien Tchouaméni. Argentina became 3 times World Champion, lead by none other than Lionel Messi, who can now put the elusive World Cup in his resumée to reaffirm he is the greatest of all time.Sergio Aguero is on the pitch banging a drum with the Argentina squad #FIFAWorldCup #ARGFRA pic.twitter.com/7wO8Wrh4FX— Football Daily (@footballdaily) December 18, 2022

Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay Officially Present Joint Candidacy For FIFA 2030 World Cup Photo by Marcelo Endelli/Getty Images What has happened to the sport? The craziest news was released regarding the 2030 edition of the FIFA World Cup. Per The Athletic’s David Ornstein, FIFA has decided that six countries will host the 2030 edition of the tournament. Spain, Portugal, and Morocco were chosen as the original hosts of the 2030 World Cup, but then the international footballing body inserted Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay to host the first three games in honor of the centenary of the first World Cup in Uruguay in 1930: Morocco, Portugal & Spain set to stage 2030 World Cup
To mark 100yrs of #FIFAWorldCup first 3 games to feature Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay at HOME
Opening ceremony + rest of event in host nations (all 6 qualify)
2034 in Asian or Oceana confedshttps://t.co/DCeVRYACsQ— David Ornstein (@David_Ornstein) October 4, 2023BFW AnalysisHosting a World Cup in Europe (Spain and Portugal), Africa (Morocco), and South America (Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay) seems like the daftest (most absurd) idea there is. If FIFA wanted to honor the centenary of the inaugural tournament, they should not have entertained the idea of Spain, Portugal, and Morocco hosting the tournament in the first place. It’s a real shame that one of the most prestigious football tournaments in the world is being overcomplicated for both fans and players. Derek Rae (@RaeComm) also shares the view that it should be held in South America only:The World Cup used to be simple. A country hosts it & the football world goes there. Personally think 2030 should be held in South America to mark the centenary, nowhere else. But now everything seems designed to be as complicated as possible for fans.— Derek Rae (@RaeComm) October 4, 2023The report also mentioned that the 2034 edition of the World Cup could be held in Asia and/or Oceania. You know, I wouldn’t mind seeing the World Cup here in the Philippines. What do you think of the worldwide World Cup? Are you in favor of this development or are you against it?
