Spain v Germany: Group E - FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022Photo by Richard Sellers/Getty ImagesFailure can eventually breed excellence. It was almost too perfect.Germany was desperate and things had not looked great for just about the entire World Cup match against Spain.Then...it happened. That it was a freak occurrence where Jamal Musiala had perfectly timed a run and was slid a perfect pass that actually connected (no easy task for Die Mannschaft these days). The Germany wunderkind was left all alone:Missed this one pic.twitter.com/JUQJLJdyUp— Thee Billionaire (@that_guy_evans) November 27, 2022And he bricked...badly.Musiala had two options:Take the shot (ideally just better than the one he ultimately did).Slide a pass to a wide open Niclas Füllkrug, who was streaking ahead of his defender to the net for a tap-in.The safe option (#2) would have ensured Germany would still be alive with a string chance to advance heading into the Costa Rica match. Choosing #1, however, ensured nothing and could have become the one moment in this tournament where the squad’s World Cup hopes completely unraveled.Musiala chose to shoot and let loose with an attempt that saw far too much of Spain goalkeeper Unai Simón and not nearly enough of the back of the net.For one of the few times in his young career, Musiala had failed to do the right thing — or at least convert a high-percentage chance — in a big moment. Despite his youth, Musiala assessed the play like a veteran.“I have to score that or raise my head and pass. It’s going to be a difficult night for me,” Musiala told Sport1’s Kerry Hau (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).Indeed, the wunderkind — who has been such a force for Bayern Munich — has struggled at times on the world’s biggest stage. The youngster can, however, take solace in the fact that he has done some really good things for Germany (as evidenced by this tweet from @iMiaSanMia):Jamal Musiala has created the most chances and completed the most dribbles for #GER at the #FIFAWorldCup so far [Opta] pic.twitter.com/Otp40AZ3q0— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) November 27, 2022Luckily for Musiala, though, there is one more game and with a standout performance, he can help power Germany to the next round...something that did not seem all that like even just a few days ago.Interested in a VERY in-depth review of Germany’s 1-1 draw with Spain? For roughly 70 minutes, it appeared that this would end up as a lost cause, but the final 20 minutes proved eventful — and show that Germany still have the ability to dig deep and rally when it needs to.A draw isn’t a win, but it was good enough for this game. Here are some quick hitters on the match:The lineup went as anticipated with Hansi Flick opting for a 4-3-3 with Thomas Müller operating as the No. 9 (Hint: It did not work):Your #GER line-up to face #ESP#FIFAWorldCup #ESPGER pic.twitter.com/63bjSvs5yI— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) November 27, 2022You could absolutely rant about this formation and the pieces within it, but Flick is literally spit-balling things right now. He tried some things...much of it didn’t work...now he will adapt again against Costa Rica.Spain was in control early, but Germany did seem to have a lot more jump in their step for this match. That was refreshing to see.In the 10th minute, Germany had a terrific opportunity, but no chances generated because Serge Gnabry went offside. İlkay Gündoğan has a nifty little flick to a hard-charging Leon Goretzka, but the Bayern Munich midfielder held on the the ball a smidge too long and Gnabry couldn’t hold his run any longer.Speaking of Gündoğan, I think it’s time to send him back to the bench. He does a lot of things...okay, but nothing great at this point.I think this was the first time I really saw Flick looked stressed. He looked beaten by this experience. That fire and constant real-time analysis that we saw during his Bayern Munich tenure was not there. This has to extremely maddening for him as he cannot seem to push the right buttons for this group (most of the time). In the 25th minute Germany had a crazy sequence where they had a few chances to make something happen, but Gündoğan inexplicably did not make a run to crash toward the net. Had he done that, he could have had a good chance to run into Gnabry’s wide shot attempt.Just a minute later, Manuel Neuer had a really baffling turnover, but David Raum bailed him out. It was a total “yikes” moment. Raum is a talent, but right now, Germany does not need his particular skill-set. I think we could see Christian Günter get his first start of the tournament. In the 40th minute, it looked like Joshua Kimmich had a perfectly-placed free kick on to the head of Antonio Rüdiger, who was centimeters offside in the end.Rüdiger has been very good in the World Cup so far.Gnabry was bad in key situations. He looked great right before he left Bayern Munich for the Germany camp, but has not been effective so far in the World Cup.In fact, Germany’s attack continued to be completely toothless and non-threatening.In the 62nd minute, Álvaro Morata, who had only been…

No call, no VAR flag, no review, really?!Big discrepancy in David Raum’s rating across the outlets here. Raum was dogged for his showing here in the comments, and Bild seems to agree — but kicker was more even-handed.Another notable delta: ratings for Manuel Neuer. The sweeper-keeper OG had a befuddling moment passing out from the back but also made one of the saves of the tournament off this lethal early strike from RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo:Spain had an early chance but Germany's Manuel Neuer got a ✋ on it for the SAVE OF THE DAY. ⚽️ pic.twitter.com/4Be0Ue4JMk— FOX Soccer (@FOXSoccer) November 28, 2022How good was Jamal Musiala’s drawn foul on Sergio Busquets, which resulted in a yellow for the Spanish maestro?Gavi-Pedri-Busi might be the most talented midfield Germany face all tournament, and not because they’re about to go out. Let’s get into it...here are some quick hitters on the match:While the game was a win, seeing the starting lineup was a gut punch. Thomas Müller is an all-time great player, but in this tournament — coming off of an injury — he was cooked. In addition — and I will acknowledge that none of this matters because Japan beat Spain — Hansi Flick’s insistence on sticking with İlkay Gündoğan set the tone for a flat start. Those were two players who brought little-to-nothing to the table in the tourney:Your #GER line-up to face #CRC#FIFAWorldCup #CRCGER pic.twitter.com/gF06duuWyT— Germany (@DFB_Team_EN) December 1, 2022Again, Germany was eliminated on Match Day 1 when Flick’s loyalty to Müller led him to ignore the fact that the Raumdeuter was not ready after an injury and really had nothing to offer the team. Müller may or may not be done...we will see how things look at Bayern Munich, but he clearly had nothing valuable to offer the team in this tournament. Niclas Füllkrug was the best option available and not starting him in any of the three games will go down as a huge gaffe for Flick. Müller just did not look like himself...and it was very concerning. The most stunning part of this tournament is that when given the chance, Flick morphed into 2018/2019 Joachim Löw with absolutely no provocation.Antonio Rüdiger was pretty terrible after having two strong games. It is no longer appropriate to say that Jamal Musiala will be a beast...he’s already there. That said, he needs to improve his finishing. It feels like he could have walked away with four goals against Costa Rica.I thought David Raum, Joshua Kimmich, and Lukas Klostermann turned in admirable performances at the outside-back positions.Kai Havertz came on to score two goals and it was insinuated on the broadcast that Havertz’s poor showing in game one and subsequent game two benching had nothing to do with performance, but with an illness. Whatever the case, Havertz did well against Costa Rica — it was just too little, too late.Where do things go from here? It feels like Flick might not stick around after the next Euros and the core of the team will be in their early 30s by the next World Cup. Clearly, to avoid what has happened in both 2018 and 2022, Germany has to make changes.Spain getting exposed for what it really is only made this loss more fitting for Germany. What a mess...I am still stunned.Overall, this was an out-and-out debacle. From poor coaching decisions to consistently underachieving performances from the players, this was arguably worse than 2018. Beating Costa Rica is nice...drawing with a good (but not great Spain squad) was decent...but coughing up a lead and subsequently losing to Japan will go down in the annals of German national team football as perhaps the most costly loss ever.If you missed our…

To stand even a chance of progressing, they’d need two goals — and had looked to be in a misfiring mood since their 10th minute opener. As it was, the Germans fought back furiously and scored three — with chances to add even more — in the closing twenty-odd minutes. But with Japan’s win secured against Spain, it was another strong closing phase that proved fruitless. Here’s how Bild scored the proceedings:#CRC 2:4 #GER | Player ratings [@BILD] pic.twitter.com/0xFx6eKEB5— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) December 2, 2022Flick: 4. That’s harsh but it’s fair. Germany got the win they needed but it sure looked like Chelsea FC’s Kai Havertz should have started from the off. With over 6 xG in the game, there was the chance — however unlikely — that they could have poured it in. But the pieces on the board through the first half were more likely to fumble intricate one-twos in the box than score two, three early goals with conviction. Whither Niclas Füllkrug?İlkay Gündoğan: 4. Perhaps this is a difference in footballing philosophy, but the English commenters on TIFO IRL expressed bewilderment that he was substituted yet again — agreeing that the Manchester City star has been Germany's best midfielder throughout the tournament.Manuel Neuer: 5. This one might be a bit tough, but the keeper didn’t have the best moments in front of goal. Still, let’s not forget his excellent 1-on-1 save in the first half, when both Leipzig’s David Raum and Real Madrid’s Antonio Rüdiger fluffed a simple clearance. The defense in front of Neuer has asked a lot of him time and time again.Jamal Musiala: 2. Many bravos for a blossoming worldwide superstar in the making. A little over a year ago, he was a sparing super-sub in the EURO. Now he’s indispensable. Germany will need to watch out and avoid the trap of adopting “let Jamal handle it” tactics, which is more or less what they seemed to enter this game with. That’s too much to put on one player, even a genius one.Luis Fernando Suárez: 3. At a minimum. The Costa Rica manager set up his team bravely and they showed their credentials by weathering the German storm up til late and even snatching a lead, however brief. If only they’d managed something akin to this against Spain. Finally, a mea culpa. I tempted fate by predicting a 4-0 Germany win with a Japan win on top of it.
