Regardless, Bayern Munich will move on, cash in more money, and prepare for a battle against reigning Champions League titleholder Paris Saint-Germain. Jamal Musiala was fit to begin the match, but the coach did let on that the attacking midfielder might not be ready to start just yet in his press conference on Friday. Instead, Serge Gnabry got the nod and was not impactful. In other position battles, Leon Goretzka started over Aleksandar Pavlović and took prime advantage of the opportunity. In addition, Konrad Laimer started at right-back (as expected), while Raphaël Guerreiro was left out in favor of Josip Stanišić.Kompany hit the nail on the head with his lineup in a lot of ways, but Gnabry just was not good enough. Luckily, the rest of the attack picked up the slack. Bayern Munich lost the possession battle and was out-shot, but was far more dangerous and efficient than Flamengo, who was tough and ready, but maybe not quite at the level needed to take down the Bavarians. At times, Bayern Munich’s press was devastating, though it was hard for the Bavarians to keep up that pace and intensity consistently. In the 6th minute, an errant, borderline careless header by Erick Pulgar flicked backward and into the far corner of the net. It was a fortuitous bounce for Bayern Munich. Just three minutes later, a perfectly timed tackle from Dayot Upamecano went straight to Harry Kane, who turned and ripped a left-footed shot that pinged off the left post and across the net to the other side for a goal. It felt like this could be a romp, but Flamengo would shot its teeth in more than a few ways. Laimer was a vital player for Bayern Munich and perfectly suited for this style of play with his seemingly endless supply of energy. The midfielder is reportedly looking to play more in the central midfield — and against the right opponents, he is a good fit. However, his value as a right-back (considering that Kompany seems to prefer playing Stanišić elsewhere) is incredibly high. Laimer should reconsider his stance. In the 15th minute, though, Laimer was a bit lucky as Manuel Neuer bailed him out with a terrific save after a crazy sequence of events in front of the Bayern Munich goal. Luiz Araújo unleashed a rocket at Neuer, who slapped it away. Man...Neuer still does have it on some plays. Sure, there will be a gaffe or three because of positioning over the course of a season, but — for my money — Neuer is the G.O.A.T.In the 33rd minute, Gerson took advantage of a napping Gnabry to blast a shot over the head of Neuer, who could not handle the heat on this attempt. On this play, Neuer likely could have done much better, though I would have been interested in what the Jugs Gun was reading on Gerson’s torpedo.Bayern Munich would not sit idle long, though. In the 41st minute, Goretzka unleashed hell on Flamengo with a long-range, dipping a screamer that left Agustín Rossi unable to even react. What a shot from Goretzka. It felt like Bayern Munich was going to walk away with the match at that point, but Flamengo was undeterred. Jorginho’s 55th minute penalty kick goal made it 3-2, but that would be as close as Flamengo would get.
