Portugal v Switzerland: Round of 16 - FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022Photo by Sebastian Frej/MB Media/Getty ImagesWith Alexander Nübel’s future in Bavaria looking cloudy, could Bayern turn to their nemesis?Bayern Munich’s GK candidates are dropping like flies. In the wake of Manuel Neuer’s season-ending ski injury, the German Rekordmeister have been linked with starring goalkeepers at the just-ended FIFA Men’s World Cup left and right. But now the interest in Sevilla and Morocco’s Yassine “Bono” Bounou, as well as in Croatia and Dinamo Zagreb’s Dominik Livaković, has apparently cooled. PSG’s Keylor Navas was never likely. This means it’s Gladbach keeper Yann Sommer — Bayern’s longtime Bundesliga nemesis — taking center stage. From Sky’s Florian Plettenberg:News Yann #Sommer: He remains the top candidate in order to replace Neuer - in case the return of Nübel would fail! Negotiations with Monaco not easy at this stage. Livakovic, Navas and Bono are out of interest. @SkySportDE pic.twitter.com/xRQWhEyT5P— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) December 19, 2022The Bavarians reportedly want to get their situation with AS Monaco-loaned Alexander Nübel clarified as quickly as possible, but it’s not looking promising:An agreement with Alexander Nübel is not in sight and is getting increasingly unlikely. Bayern are in talks with Yann Sommer in the background. The Swiss goalkeeper is open to a move to Munich [@SkySportNews]— Bayern & Germany (@iMiaSanMia) December 19, 2022So what’s the deal with Sommer, the Swiss international who will save everything in sight when he steps onto the same field as the Bavarians? The recently-turned 34-year-old has a contract expiring in June 2023. Like Leipzig’s Konrad Laimer, he’ll soon be free to sign his next deal with any team — but Bayern would need him now, and so a transfer would have to be agreed.Gladbach apparently have either little inclination or ability to keep their hero keeper beyond this year, so it might be time for them to get what they can. Transfermarkt rates Sommer at a cool €5m, making him among the cheaper — but also older — options to replace Neuer.

Portugal v Switzerland: Round of 16 - FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022Photo by Sebastian Frej/MB Media/Getty ImagesIs the door closed for Bayern Munich on Yann Sommer?Just yesterday, Sky journalist Florian Plettenberg offered an update on Bayern Munich’s pursuit of Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer (as captured by @iMiaSanMia):Still no breakthrough in talks regarding Yann Sommer at the moment. The deal can still fall through. 50-50 chances as of now. Gladbach coach Daniel Farke is putting pressure on the club to keep Sommer. The Swiss keeper is still Bayern’s priority.Gladbach would only release Sommer if they find a replacement. Their top candidate Jonas Omlin from Montpellier would cost around €10m this month, but Bayern wouldn’t pay €10m for Sommer. FCB’s expectation is to pay around €5m.Plettenberg later added additional context from his own Twitter account, which confirmed Bayern Munich’s interest but continued to note that nothing will be easy about this pursuit:News #Sommer: As reported: Still very difficult! Coach Farke said a few minutes ago that he assumes that Yann will play the 2nd half of the season in Gladbach. He told Sommer that he needs him but Sommer told him that he wants to join Bayern.News #Sommer: In his interview at Sky he said today: “We are checking our options. We will take a decision soon.“ About Yann #Sommer: “He is an issue, yes!“Then we saw the news that Gladbach will not be selling Sommer — at least right now (like this very second — see our full post here):Okay, this is some seriously bad news. Bayern Munich were banking on signing Yann Sommer this winter as a replacement for Manuel Neuer, who is out for the rest of the season with injury. Now, according to Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus, that will not be allowed to happen.“We will not be giving up Yann Sommer,” he said to Rheinische Post. “That’s what we told Bayern as well.”Plettenberg, though, does not feel like Bayern Munich is fully out of the game for Sommer — but it will be difficult, just as he has been saying all along:News #Sommer: As reported yesterday the deal could fail! Now Virkus said at RP: No transfer in winter! BUT been told that Virkus told Bayern: They won’t release him AT THIS STAGE. The door is NOT closed 100 %! There are parameters to fulfill. @SkySportDE pic.twitter.com/bJBpA8pMcV— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) January 7, 2023Sommer has big ambitions and has also allegedly already agreed on personal terms with Bayern Munich. It sounds like Gladbach needs some major assurances before it will let him go, however.

Switzerland v Cameroon: Group G - FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022Photo by Stuart Franklin/Getty ImagesLooks like this transfer isn’t dead yet!Yesterday, we got the news that Borussia Monchengladbach would not let Yann Sommer join Bayern Munich this winter. That should’ve been the end of it, but now there’s a new twist. According to the extremely reliable Florian Plettenberg, the goalkeeper himself is pushing hard for a transfer to be completed as soon as this winter. From his Twitter, Plettenberg reported the following:X News #Sommer: He has contacted R. Bonhof in the last days! He told the vice president of Gladbach that he wants to join Bayern NOW! As revealed: Deal is NOT off. Sommer still pushing for the transfer. Bayern is considering next steps. Sommer remains the 1a option! @SkySportDE pic.twitter.com/RzMKfcAUeq— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) January 8, 2023This would, naturally, be a huge boost to Bayern in the Sommer sweepstakes. Gladbach may use their hardline stance to increase the player’s price, but given that Sommer’s contract expires this summer and he has no intention to renew, the Foals have limited leverage. For now, reports indicate that Bayern have only offered around 5 million euros. With Manuel Neuer sidelined for the rest of the season, Bayern’s brass will be well aware that a new keeper is sorely needed for the second half of the season. Games against the likes of PSG in the Champions League will not be won with Sven Ulreich in goal. Sommer, until now, has been the best out of all the options presented. If the club can somehow get this deal over the line, then Bayern have a chance of going all the way in all competitions this season.

FC Bayern München Doha Training Camp - Day 2Photo by Mohammad Karamali/DeFodi Images via Getty ImagesThe sooner a Manuel Neuer replacement is signed for Bayern, the better. The clock’s ticking. The January transfer window has been officially open for over ten days and Bayern Munich still does not have a replacement goalkeeper for the injured Manuel Neuer. They have signed Daley Blind from AFC Ajax, which sort of came out of left field, but the front office’s internal deadline of January 6th to have found a new keeper by has come and gone.Borussia Monchengladbach’s Yann Sommer is the main man the leads the race to become Neuer’s replacement, but there has been so much back and forth with the narrative coming out of both club’s camps. It’s been made clear that Bayern wants Sommer and Sommer wants to join Bayern, but there’s been some haggling over the potential transfer fee as well as Gladbach’s hardline approach of not wanting to let the keeper go for fears that they won’t have an ample replacement lined up themselves. There’s still plenty of time left in the winter transfer window, but we’re edging ever so closer to Bayern’s trip to RB Leipzig on the 20th of this month.Per new information from Bild (as per @iMiaSanMia), Bayern really wants to get the keeper situation sorted as soon as possible, even though the transfer window is technically open until the 31st. The first leg against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League round of 16 is just two weeks after the close of the window and 3. Bundesliga matches will have already started by that time as well, which could affect the availability of Bayern Munich II keepers. Sven Ulreich is still ready and available, but Bayern has made it clear they will not be relying on him to be the player to be the long-term number one in Neuer’s absence.Per new information from Sky Sports’ highly reputable Florian Plettenberg, there hasn’t been any movement in terms of Sommer’s potential transfer to Bayern. Gladbach still want want €8-10m, but Bayern does not want to budge past their valuation of want €5m, knowing that Sommer’s contract is expiring this summer and he does not plan on renewing with Die Fohlen.News #Sommer: At this stage definitely no movement although Gladbach hasn’t closed the door completely. They still want €8-10m. But Bayern is still NOT willing to pay more than €5! Sommer still wants the deal as per @Blick_Sport confirmed today! @SkySportDE pic.twitter.com/6tz8bXxz2S— Florian Plettenberg (@Plettigoal) January 10, 2023

Gladbach does not seem to be messing around with what it wants from Bayern Munich and it seems like this turned into a bad Pawn Stars negotiation.Either way, though, not all hope is lost just yet per Bild:According to @BILD, the last word has not been spoken yet in the negotiations. Gladbach decided to wait and ask Montpellier again about their favourite Sommer replacement Jonas Omlin. Further talks will take place.Sky Sport’s Florian Plettenberg also had a report on the situation as well, which indicates more talks could take place today:News #Sommer: Our excl. news about €8+1m now confirmed via BILD. Simply put, it was really only ever Sommer or nothing when it comes to players outside the greater Bayern Munich organization.Aside of trying to persuade disgruntled loanee Alexander Nübel to return from AS Monaco, Bayern Munich did not seriously pursue any other candidates than Sommer, despite putting out some feelers here and there on other goalkeepers.Once Nübel and Monaco made it clear that the 25-year-old Germany would not return to his parent club, Bayern Munich put all of its focus on Sommer.Interested in more discussion about this transfer and Bayern Munich in general? FC Bayern München v Borussia Dortmund - BundesligaPhoto by S. Mellar/FC Bayern via Getty ImagesThe new Bayern keeper empathized with the unfortunate BVB keeper. If you were zoning out as Bayern Munich vs. Borussia Dortmund played out in the background, BVB keeper Gregor Kobel’s shocking error in the 13th minute likely jolted you to your senses. With a threatening long ball launched towards goal and pacy Bayern winger Leroy Sané bearing down, Kobel rushed out to make the clearance — and scuffed his connection horribly, leaving the ball to roll slowly but inexorably into the back of his own net.“As a goalkeeper, you know how it feels,” his Bayern counterpart Yann Sommer said after the game (via @iMiaSanMia). “But these are mistakes that happen to every goalkeeper. You learn from that.”Sommer ended up conceding twice himself, though both goals occurred after the result was already mostly settled. For the first, he guessed correctly but failed to reach Emre Can’s well-taken penalty. For the second, young Germany international striker Youssoufa Moukoko arguably interfered from an offside position as Donyell Malen curled a ball towards the far post. Sommer looked caught of two minds, but in the end, no matter: Bayern scooped up a nice, clean win over their rivals. It caps a week of tumult after Bayern’s senior players returned from international break to train under new coach Thomas Tuchel for the first time. Julian Nagelsmann’s dismissal has been the hot topic asked of every player after this first match under new management, and Sommer, like many of his teammates, offered kind words to the former coach:Yann #Sommer: „Ich hatte nie, das Gefühl, dass Julian #Nagelsmann die Kabine verloren hat. Switzerland v Romania: Group I - UEFA EURO 2024 Qualifying Round Photo by Harry Langer/DeFodi Images via Getty Images This is not a great start to preseason for Bayern Munich. For months, it has been expected that Yann Sommer would receive a handshake, pat on the back, and a thank you for his service to Bayern Munich last season. With Manuel Neuer expected to be back in tow, a transfer for Sommer seemed like the logical next step. Not so fast my friend. Neuer’s comeback has been delayed and the interest that Sommer has received from Inter Milan could be put on the backburner per Sky Sport journalist Florian Plettenberg: More on Yann #Sommer: Should he leave #FCBayern now, a transfer of Mamardashvili is a possibility. But it‘s also a question of the price. ➡️ Bayern bosses are not in a hurry. First of all they want to speak with Sommer next week. ➡️ At this stage, Bayern is also considering to keep Sommer. #Inter More on Yann #Sommer: Should he leave #FCBayern now, a transfer of Mamardashvili is a possibility. The Swiss goalkeeper is certainly good enough to be a starter somewhere else, but Neuer’s delay has put the Bavarians in a tough position. While Giorgi Mamardashvili is said to be interested in Bayern Munich, the situation is going to be tough to navigate until the club gets an idea of what Neuer’s exact issues are and how much more of a delay there might be until he returns.

The 35-year-old former Borussia Mönchengladbach shot-stopper is set to move to Inter Milan after the Italians have moved on Andre Onana to Manchester United:❗️Update Yann #Sommer: Nach @kicker-Information soll Inter Mailand bereit sein, die Ausstiegsklausel des Bayernkeepers zu bezahlen. Talks between the clubs are expected. #fcbayern #interN.B. @iMiaSanMia clarified that the release clause for Sommer is €8 millionThis would mean Bayern will go into 2023/24 with a Manuel Neuer treading on thin ice and a Sven Ulreich who simply can’t be the only other goalkeeper that the Rekordmeister have in their roster. No, the need for another ‘keeper is too big to be ignored. So far, the choices for the Bavarians’ next GK are narrowed down to Yassine Bounou from Sevilla and Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia. But things have gone awfully quiet…
