October 3: It Will Eat You Alive
#Devotional
Ezekiel 6:1β8:18; Revelation 2:12β29; Job 33:1β7
Idolatry eats at our souls. And God puts up with it for only so long.
βAnd the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, βSon of man, set your face to the mountains of Israel and prophesy against them, and you must say, βMountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord Yahweh, thus says the Lord Yahweh to the mountains and to the hills, to the ravines and to the valleys: βLook, I am bringing upon you the sword, and I will destroy your high places, and your altars will be desolate, and your incense altars will be broken, and I will throw down your slain ones before your idols, and I will place the corpses of the children of Israel before their idols, and I will scatter your bones around your altarsβ β (Ezek 6:1β6).
Ezekiel portrays Godβs view of the true nature of idolatry and the ramifications of living an idolatrous life. When people put wood and stone, or gadgets and entertainment, before their relationship with Yahweh, they are giving up the most valuable part of themselves.
Today, most people place entertainment above God. We value celebrity more than Jesus. We may deny this, but if we closely examine how we spend our time and money, we find that we love our idols as much as the ancients did.
How can we as Christians be instruments for the changes God wants to bring to the world if we conform ourselves to the expectations of our culture? Where we invest our time, assets, and attention reveals what we care about most. If we give ourselves over to worldly priorities instead of Godβs, we deserve the same fate that Yahweh prophesied for the children of Israel in Ezek 6:1β6.
But our good and gracious God wants to redeem us, and we should commit ourselves to seeking His blessing instead of His judgment (John 3:16β17; Rom 8). If we follow Him with our entire beingβsetting aside all that stands between us and Himβthe world will look different. Idolatry will be revealed for what it is: a thief and a glutton, stealing the very lives God has in store for us. If we seek God with all our being, idolatry will hold no power over us. It will die from neglect while our lives take on new vitality as we boldly proclaim the glory of our life-giving God.
What idols stand between you and the life God has for you?

October 3 - All Authority from the Father
#LifeOfChrist
ββThe Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand. He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on himββ (John 3:35β36).
Because of His love for the Son, the Father has given Him supreme authority over all things on earth and in heaven (Matt. 11:27; 28:18; Phil. 2:9β11). That supremacy is a clear indicator of His deity.
Johnβs affirmation of Jesusβ absolute authority demonstrated his humble attitude, even as his own heralding ministry faded into the background. Having fulfilled his mission on earth, John realized that his work would soon be finished.
But before he faded from the scene, John gave a warning and invitation that forms a fitting climax to his ministry: βHe who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.β The blessed truth of salvation is that the one βwho believes in the Son has eternal lifeβ as a present possession, not merely as a future hope.
But on the other hand, the one βwho does not obey the Son will not see life.β The fearful reality is that βthe wrath of Godβ continually βabides onβ disobedient sinners who refuse to believe in Jesus Christ. Condemnation is their present condition. The idea here is not that God will one day condemn sinners for their disobedient unbelief; they are already in a state of condemnation (3:18; 2 Peter 2:9) from which only saving faith in Jesus Christ can deliver them.
Ask Yourself
In what ways is the wrath of God evident in the lives of unbelievers? How do you hear it in their voice, see it in their eyes, notice it in their countenance, observe it in their families? Some of these folks seem so nice and easy-going. What are the more subtle forms of dissatisfaction they carry within them?

WEEK 1 β Dormancy & Trust (Oct 1β4)
3. October 3 (Saturday)
Dear Daughter,
Two trees standing bare in the same frost look identical to a passerby β but only one has roots deep enough to survive it.
Celebrate the quiet resilience in your marriage that no one applauds because it isn't loud.
Unseen endurance deserves its own joy.
'Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord⦠he is like a tree planted by the waters' (Jer 17:7-8).
What quiet resilience in your marriage deserves celebrating today, even if no one else sees it?

Oct 3 (Sat) β RIDDLE-ORACLE
"The Almond Branch and the Watching God"
Jeremiah is shown a simple branch and asked what he sees. "A branch of an almond tree," he answers β and God replies, "You have seen well, for I am watching over my word to perform it" (Jer 1:11-12). The riddle hides in the Hebrew wordplay itself: the almond tree is named "the watcher" because it is the first to bloom each year, waking before every other tree, as if it cannot wait for spring. πΈποΈ
Here is what the branch teaches your covenant: God is not slow to bloom His promises over your marriage β He is often the FIRST to move, watching and waiting for the season to turn, long before you can see any sign of blossom in your own circumstances. The almond does not bloom because the weather finally warmed; it blooms because something in its nature is fixed on what is coming, unmoved by what still looks like winter around it. βοΈπΏ
And notice β Jeremiah was not asked to explain the vision, only to SEE it rightly, to trust what was shown even before the fulfillment arrived. Your marriage may be standing in what still looks like a bare, wintered field. But the Watcher has already set His eye on the branch. The blossom is not a maybe β it is a matter of timing. π₯
β What promise over your marriage has felt dormant, as though winter forgot to end?
β Can you trust that the Watcher's eye has never left the branch, even while you saw no bloom?
Let us search the Word together and watch for what is already budding.
