Universality and the Rise of a New African Political Consciousness: How Kenyan Gen Z is Reshaping African Politics

Across Africa, the concept of universality has become one of the most powerful — and controversial — ideas in modern politics. At its core, universality means that certain rights, services, protections, and opportunities should apply equally to every citizen regardless of tribe, class, religion, gender, or political affiliation. It is the belief that…

BEI YA MAFUTA, UBORA WA BARABARA NA GHARAMA HALISI YA KUENDESHA UCHUMI WA TAITA TAVETA

MAONI

TAITA TAVETA COUNTY STAFF CHOIR STRANDED IN NAKURU OVER DELAYED ALLOWANCES

Members of the Taita Taveta County Government Staff Choir are reportedly stranded in Nakuru County after the county government allegedly failed to facilitate night-out allowances for more than 35 staff members participating in the 2026 Madaraka Day national celebrations.

The choir was officially invited by the Presidential Music Commission to perform during the national festivities scheduled for 1st June 2026 in Njoro, Nakuru County.

According to choir members, an official invitation letter from PAMMIACO was forwarded to the County Secretary last week, after which approval and release letters were issued authorizing the team to travel from 28th May to 2nd June 2026.

However, what was expected to be a routine departure reportedly turned into a frustrating ordeal.

Choir members say they assembled at the Governor’s Office on Thursday at around noon for an anticipated flag-off ceremony, but no county officials were present to address or facilitate them before departure. They remained at the premises until approximately 7:00 pm as attempts to reach the County Chief Officer for Finance, Mr. Nganga, allegedly went unanswered despite all required documentation reportedly having been finalized and awaiting payment processing.

With no intervention forthcoming, the choir members later proceeded to the Governor’s residence where they reportedly camped until around 2:00 am seeking assistance.

It was during this period that the First Lady, Mrs. Sabina Mwadime, is said to have intervened after holding discussions with choir officials. According to members, she personally assisted in settling the bus hiring costs and further facilitated lunch and supper allowances amounting to Ksh 2,000 per choir member.

Mrs. Mwadime also reportedly encouraged the team to proceed with the journey to Nakuru at around 2:30 am while assuring them that she would engage the County Secretary and the Finance Department to ensure the pending night-out allowances were processed.

The choir eventually arrived in Nakuru yesterday at approximatelx 1:30 pm and later met the Deputy County Commissioner in Njoro ahead of the national celebrations.
Despite the intervention, the promised allowances had reportedly still not been released by the time of publication, leaving members facing serious accommodation and food challenges. Sources within the team say the Ksh 2,000 emergency facilitation has already been exhausted, yet the choir is expected to remain in Nakuru County for five days as per the programme issued by PAMMIACO.

Affected members are now appealing to the leadership of The Taita Taveta County Government , including Governor H.E Dr. Andrew Mwadime - Wakujaa, the County Secretary, and the County Chief Officer for Finance, Mr. Nganga, to urgently intervene and release the pending allowances to enable the team to represent the county with dignity during the national celebrations.

According to the choir members, the invitation, approvals, and travel documentation were officially processed by the county government, and the only outstanding issue remains the delayed facilitation of staff allowances.

THE SINGAPORE ILLUSION: A REALITY CHECK ON THE STATE OF OUR NATION

There is an increasingly persistent narrative, propagated either by individuals within the President’s inner circle or by an enthusiastic cadre of loyalists from the United Democratic Alliance, that Kenya is firmly on a smooth and uninterrupted path toward becoming the next Singapore. It is an attractive narrative. It is also one that demands serious…
