The UN Special Envoy for #Yemen Hans Grundberg delivered his briefing today to the #UN Security Council.

The UN Special Envoy for #Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded today a visit to Riyadh, where he met with President of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi. They discussed the urgent need to address the deteriorating living conditions for Yemenis and to make progress toward a political agreement that opens a path toward a just and sustainable peace. The Special Envoy also welcomed recent steps taken by the Government of Yemen and the Central Bank of Yemen in Aden, in particular, to build upon the significant currency appreciation witnessed lately.
Grundberg also met with the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al Jaber, where he emphasized the importance of continued constructive regional engagement to support conditions conducive to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
The Special Envoy held discussions with the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (P5), during which he underscored the need for a unified and coherent international approach to reinforce efforts toward a peaceful and negotiated settlement in Yemen.

Amman, 31 August 2025 - I strongly condemn the new wave of arbitrary detentions of UN personnel today in Sana’a and Hudaydah by Ansar Allah, as well as the forced entry into UN premises and seizure of UN property. At least 11 UN personnel were detained. These arrests come in addition to 23 UN personnel currently in detention, some detained since 2021 and 2023, and one colleague who died in detention earlier this year.
Despite sustained engagement and assurances sought over the last year, the arbitrary detention of UN staff, NGO workers, and civil society has continued. These actions severely hinder broader efforts to deliver assistance and advance peace in Yemen.
The work of UN personnel is designed and conducted under the principles of neutrality, impartiality, independence and humanity.
These arrests violate the fundamental obligation to respect and protect their safety, dignity, and ability to carry out their essential work in Yemen.
I reiterate my demand to Ansar Allah to release immediately and unconditionally all UN personnel, as well as staff from national and international NGOs, civil society organizations, and diplomatic missions.
I stand in solidarity with detained colleagues and their families. Their release will remain a priority for me and the rest of the UN family.

Statement by the Secretary-General – Additional detention of United Nations personnel in Yemen
I strongly condemn the arbitrary detentions on 31 August of at least 11 United Nations personnel by the Houthi de facto authorities in Yemen in areas under their control. I further condemn the forced entry into the premises of the World Food Programme, the seizure of UN property, and attempts to enter other UN premises in Sana’a.
I strongly reiterate my demand for the immediate and unconditional release of those detained today, as well as all other personnel from the United Nations, international and national non-governmental organizations, civil society and diplomatic missions who have been arbitrarily detained since June 2024 and those held since 2021 and 2023. The continued arbitrary detention of all such persons is intolerable.
The personnel of the UN and its partners must never be targeted, arrested or detained while carrying out their duties for the UN. The safety and security of UN personnel and property as well as the inviolability of UN premises must be guaranteed at all times.
The United Nations will continue to work tirelessly to secure the safe and immediate release of all arbitrarily detained individuals. The United Nations and its partners will continue to support the people of Yemen and their aspirations for a just and lasting peace.

Amman, 2 September 2025 - The UN Special Envoy for #Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded a visit to Muscat, where he met with senior Omani officials, Ansar Allah chief negotiator Mohammed Abdelsalam, and representatives of the diplomatic community.
In these meetings, Grundberg expressed his deep concern over the continuous cycle of hostilities between Ansar Allah and Israel and its repercussions inside Yemen and for the region. He called for restraint, de-escalation, and the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. He also underlined, in this regard, the responsibility of all involved to prevent a broader escalation and stressed the importance of regional and international unity for the UN’s efforts to advance peace in Yemen.
The Special Envoy also reiterated his strong condemnation of the recent, and reportedly ongoing, wave of arbitrary detentions of UN personnel by Ansar Allah. He demanded that all UN, NGO, civil society, and diplomatic mission personnel be immediately and unconditionally released. He stressed that these detentions, as well as the forced entry into UN premises and seizure of UN property by Ansar Allah, seriously endangers the UN’s ability to operate in Yemen and deliver much-needed assistance. He also emphasized that these actions put all UN staff and operations at serious risk and underscored the fundamental obligation to respect and protect the safety of UN personnel.
The Special Envoy urged all to prioritize finding sustainable solutions for Yemen while underlining that the UN remains a steadfast partner of the Yemeni people on their path toward peace.

عمّان، 2 سبتمبر/أيلول 2025 - اختتم المبعوث الأممي الخاص إلى اليمن، هانس غروندبرغ، زيارة إلى مسقط، حيث التقى بكبار المسؤولين العمانيين، وكبير مفاوضي أنصار الله، محمد عبد السلام، وممثلين عن السلك الدبلوماسي.

The members of the Security Council strongly condemned the detentions since 31 August of at least 21 United Nations personnel by the Houthis, as well as the forced entry into premises of the World Food Programme and UNICEF, and the seizure of UN property, in violation of international law. They stressed that the safety and security of UN personnel and property as well as the inviolability of UN premises must be guaranteed at all times.
Council members condemned in the strongest terms the ongoing detentions by the Houthis of personnel from the United Nations, national and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations and diplomatic missions. They expressed deep concern for the welfare of those personnel detained since 2021, 2023 and 2024, as well as those detained since 31 August 2025.
Council members demanded the immediate and unconditional release of all those detained by the Houthis and reiterated that all threats to those delivering humanitarian aid and assistance are unacceptable.
Council members expressed their grave concern at the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Yemen and stressed that unimpeded humanitarian access is essential. Council members noted alarmingly high levels of food insecurity amongst the Yemeni population, and expressed their concern that detentions of aid workers risk exacerbating an already dire humanitarian situation.
Council members reiterated their demand that the Houthis ensure respect of international humanitarian law with regard to the safe, rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access to ensure assistance can reach civilians in need.
Council members emphasised that the safety of United Nations personnel remains of upmost importance and called on the Houthis to enable a safe and secure operating environment and uninterrupted delivery of humanitarian assistance in areas under their control. To this end, they reiterated their support to the United Nations in maintaining measures to optimise staff safety and security in light of the current security context.
Council members welcomed the continued work of the United Nations through all possible channels to secure the safe and immediate release of those detained. They reaffirmed their strong commitment to the unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Yemen, and its commitment to stand by the people of Yemen. They reiterated their support for United Nations Special Envoy Hans Grundberg in his efforts towards a negotiated, inclusive, Yemeni-led and Yemeni-owned political settlement based on the agreed references and consistent with relevant Security Council resolutions.
