UN Special Envoy concludes visit to Riyadh
Amman,15 October 2025-The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded today a visit to Riyadh, where he met with the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al Jaber, the United Arab Emirates Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al Zaabi, as well as ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (P5) and other members of the international diplomatic community.
Grundberg noted that the recently brokered ceasefire in Gaza opens a window of opportunity to reinforce regional stability, renew momentum toward peace in Yemen and create conditions that support sustained de-escalation and advance an inclusive political process. He stressed the need to make use of this opportunity through a coordinated approach.
Across all his meetings, the Special Envoy discussed the continued detention by Ansar Allah of UN, diplomatic, and NGO personnel, stressing that such actions obstruct humanitarian operations and hinder peace efforts. He underscored that the safety and security of all humanitarian workers is a high priority for the United Nations, must be guaranteed, and called for the unconditional and immediate release of all detained personnel.

Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General - on the continued public accusations made by the Houthis against United Nations personnel in Yemen
The Secretary-General is gravely concerned by the continued public accusations made by the Houthis, including on 16 October by their leadership, against United Nations personnel in Yemen. He categorically rejects all such accusations.
The Secretary-General stands in solidarity with UN personnel in Yemen and the world over – accusations such as these are dangerous and unacceptable. They seriously jeopardize the safety of UN personnel and humanitarian workers and undermine life-saving operations.
UN personnel and humanitarian workers risk their lives every day while trying to save and support communities in dire need, committed to the principles of humanity, neutrality, independence, and impartiality. The Secretary-General salutes the unwavering humanitarian work of the United Nations and partners, which has saved the lives of hundreds of thousands in Yemen over the years. He reminds all parties of their responsibility and obligations to protect humanitarian operations and personnel, at all times, in accordance with international law.
The Secretary-General further renews his call for the immediate and unconditional release of all personnel from the UN, non-governmental and civil society organizations, as well as diplomatic missions, who remain arbitrarily detained by the Houthi de facto authorities, some of them since 2021. He underlines that, pursuant to their obligations under international law, the Houthis must evacuate UN premises and hand back UN assets and equipment seized.

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded today a new round of discussions in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
In Riyadh, the Special Envoy met with Yemen’s Foreign Minister Shaya Al-Zindani and Presidential Leadership Council member Abdullah Al-Alimi. Discussions focused on recent developments and ongoing UN efforts to sustain momentum toward dialogue that can secure lasting peace and stability.
Grundberg also met with Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al-Jaber, emphasizing that achieving an inclusive political solution that reflects the aspirations of Yemenis and addresses regional concerns remains a shared priority.
He further had a meeting with the ambassadors of the Permanent Members of the UN Security Council (P5), as well as with other members of the international community in Riyadh. Discussions centered on ensuring a unified international approach in support of the UN’s mediation efforts.
Earlier, on 10 November in Abu Dhabi, the Special Envoy met with Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to the President, Khalifa Shaheen Al Marar, Minister of State of the United Arab Emirates, and Lana Nusseibeh, Minister of State. Discussions focused on recent developments in Yemen and the region, and on ways to strengthen regional consensus and maintain dialogue to support stability in Yemen.
The Special Envoy used every opportunity during his meetings to reiterate his call for the immediate and unconditional release of UN personnel detained by Ansar Allah, underlining that their continued arbitrary detention undermines the UN’s ability to deliver critical humanitarian aid in areas under Ansar Allah’s control and erodes the trust essential for mediation.
