The Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg met today in Cairo with Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty to discuss the recent developments in #Yemen. He briefed the Minister on his recent engagements with Yemeni, regional and international actors and welcomed all ongoing efforts towards de-escalation. The discussions reaffirmed that a comprehensive and inclusive political solution is the only way to sustainably resolve the conflict in Yemen and ensure regional security and stability.

Amman, 8 January 2026 - The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has concluded a visit to Riyadh as part of his ongoing engagement with Yemeni, regional, and international actors.
During the visit, he met with the President of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC), Rashad Al-Alimi, the Yemeni Minister of Foreign Affairs, Shaya Zindani, and other senior Yemeni officials, including members of the Presidential Leadership Council, Abdulrahman Abu Zaraa Al-Muharrami and Tarek Saleh.
Discussions focused on recent developments in Yemen and their broader implications. In this context, the Special Envoy underscored that the call by the PLC President Al-Alimi for southern dialogue hosted by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia offers a timely opportunity to reduce tensions, address long-stand grievances through political means, and move discussions towards stabilization.

The UN Special Envoy for #Yemen, Hans Grundberg, met today in Muscat with senior Omani officials to discuss recent developments in Yemen and the broader regional context. He expressed his appreciation to Oman for its continued support to the UN-led peace efforts.
The Special Envoy met also with Ansar Allah Chief Negotiator Mohammed Abdulsalam to discuss pathways to advance political dialogue. He stressed the need to maintain momentum on the release process of the conflict-related detainees, based on the outcomes of the meeting concluded in Muscat on 23 December 2025.
During all discussions, the Special Envoy reiterated the UN’s continued engagement with all parties to support efforts to a return to an inclusive political process and advance sustainable solutions that address the needs of Yemenis as well as regional concerns.
In addition, the Special Envoy, together with the UN official leading on the issue of detentions, Muin Shreim, raised the continued arbitrary detention of UN personnel by Ansar Allah, calling for their immediate and unconditional release and underscoring the importance of respecting the safety and security of UN staff.

⚪️وشدد على أن "هذه اللحظة تتطلّب من القادة اليمنيين الاستثمار في السياسة بدلاً من اللجوء إلى القوة، وفي المؤسسات بدلاً من التفكك، وفي المصلحة الوطنية بدلاً من الحسابات الضيقة". ودعا الأطراف إلى اغتنام الفرصة المتاحة والتحرك بحزم نحو الاستقرار وعملية سلام شاملة.

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded today a visit in Riyadh, as part of his ongoing engagement with Yemeni, regional, and international stakeholders.
The Envoy met with Yemeni Prime Minister Salim Bin Buriek focusing on the recent political developments in Yemen as well as the economic situation, including the impact of economic challenges on the daily lives of Yemenis. Discussions underscored that economic stabilization is critical for creating conditions conducive to peace, and emphasized the importance of coordinated efforts to address economic pressures alongside political engagement.
Grundberg also met with the Government of Yemen’s Commission for Prisoners and Detainees and representatives of the Coalition to follow up on the outcomes of the recent negotiations between the parties in Muscat and ongoing efforts to agree on the names of conflict-related detainees to be released in the next phase. He stressed the importance of maintaining momentum and translating agreements into tangible progress, noting the humanitarian significance of these releases for thousands of families across Yemen.
The Special Envoy also met with ambassadors and members of the international diplomatic community. Discussions focused on recent political and economic developments in Yemen and the region, and the importance of sustained international engagement to support de-escalation efforts and advance an inclusive political process.

The Special Envoy notes that this development comes at a moment where renewed efforts are needed to advance an inclusive, Yemeni-led political process, to address Yemen’s political, economic and security challenges, and to respond to the priorities of the Yemeni people. In this context, the Special Envoy also welcomes the return of women in the cabinet, as an important step toward strengthening inclusive governance and reinforcing representative decision-making.
