The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded a visit to Washington, D.C., where he met with senior United States government officials, as well as US and Yemeni experts, to discuss latest developments in Yemen and the region.

During the visit, the Special Envoy met with Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs to the US President, Massad Boulos, as well as other senior officials at the State Department and the National Security Council.

In his meetings, Grundberg stressed the need to keep Yemen from being drawn into the current regional escalation and to safeguard space for the peace process. He also emphasized the importance of sustained regional and international support for a comprehensive political process under UN auspices to end the conflict in Yemen.

Statement by the UN Special Envoy for Yemen on recent developments

Amman, 29 March 2026 - The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, expressed grave concern over Ansar Allah’s recent decision to engage in the regional war by launching military attacks against Israel.

"This escalatory action risks drawing Yemen into the regional war, which would only make the conflict in Yemen harder to resolve, deepen its economic consequences, and prolong the suffering of civilians," Grundberg said. He stressed that no single actor has the right to unilaterally drag the country into a wider conflict.

He called for maximum restraint and an immediate halt to further military action. Grundberg is engaging with Yemeni, regional and international stakeholders, urging all parties, particularly Ansar Allah, to use diplomatic and mediation channels to de-escalate and prevent further regional spillover.

The United Nations remains committed to advancing a just and sustainable peace in Yemen. Achieving this requires the parties to put the interests of the Yemeni people first and avoid further entanglement in regional confrontation.

بيان صادر عن المبعوث الأممي الخاص إلى اليمن بشأن التطورات الأخيرة

عمّان، 29 مارس/آذار - 2026 أعرب المبعوث الأممي الخاص إلى اليمن، هانس غروندبرغ، عن قلقه البالغ إزاء قرار أنصار الله الأخير بالانخراط في الحرب الإقليمية عبر شنّ هجمات عسكرية ضد إسرائيل.

وقال غروندبرغ: “إن هذا التصعيد ينذر بجر اليمن إلى الحرب الإقليمية، الأمر الذي سيزيد من صعوبة حلّ النزاع في اليمن، ويُعمّق تداعياته الاقتصادية، ويُطيل معاناة المدنيين”، مشدداً على أنه لا يحق لأي طرف أن يزج بالبلاد في صراع أوسع.

كما دعا إلى أقصى درجات ضبط النفس ووقف فوري لمزيد من الأعمال العسكرية. ويواصل غروندبرغ انخراطه مع الأطراف اليمنية والإقليمية والدولية، حاثاً جميع الأطراف، ولا سيما أنصار الله، على استخدام القنوات الدبلوماسية والوساطة لخفض التصعيد ومنع المزيد من امتداد النزاع إقليمياً.

وتؤكد الأمم المتحدة التزامها بدعم تحقيق سلام عادل ومستدام في اليمن. ويتطلب ذلك من الأطراف وضع مصالح الشعب اليمني في المقام الأول وتجنب المزيد من الانخراط في المواجهات الإقليمية.

UNMHA and OSESGY discuss transition arrangements with the Government of Yemen Redeployment Coordination Committee delegation

In the context of Security Council resolution 2813 of 27 January 2026, a joint team of the United Nations Mission to Support the Hudaydah Agreement (UNMHA) and the Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General (OSESGY) led by UNMHA Officer-in-Charge, Ms. Mari Yamashita, held online consultations with the Government of Yemen delegation of the Redeployment Coordination Committee (RCC) on 26 March 2026. Discussions focused on joint achievements by the RCC, residual tasks and transition arrangements to OSESGY. UNMHA and OSESGY reaffirmed the commitment of the United Nations to continue supporting the implementation of the Hudaydah Agreement and the importance of sustained communication and cooperation in support of stability in Hudaydah and in Yemen.

Following the consultations with the parties to the Hudaydah Agreement over the past months, UNMHA completes the transfer of its residual tasks to OSESGY and ceases its operations on 31 March, in accordance with Security Council resolution 2813.

في سياق قرار مجلس الأمن رقم 2813 الصادر في 27 يناير/كانون الثاني 2026، عقد فريق مشترك من بعثة الأمم المتحدة لدعم اتفاق الحديدة ومكتب المبعوث الخاص للأمين العام للأمم المتحدة الى اليمن ، برئاسة السيدة ماري ياماشيتا، القائمة بأعمال رئيس بعثة الأمم المتحدة لدعم اتفاق الحديدة، مشاورات عبر الإنترنت مع وفد حكومة اليمن في لجنة تنسيق إعادة الانتشار في 26 مارس/آذار 2026. وتركزت المناقشات على الإنجازات المشتركة للجنة تنسيق إعادة الانتشار، والمهام المتبقية، وترتيبات المرحلة الانتقالية إلى مكتب المبعوث الخاص للأمين العام. وأكدت بعثة الأمم المتحدة لدعم اتفاق الحديدة ومكتب المبعوث الخاص للأمين العام مجدداً التزام الأمم المتحدة بمواصلة دعم تنفيذ اتفاق الحديدة، وأهمية استمرار التواصل والتعاون لدعم الاستقرار في الحديدة واليمن.

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, has arrived in Aden today as part of his ongoing engagements in Yemen and the region to advance a Yemeni-led political process.

UN Special Envoy for Yemen concludes visit to Aden

Amman, 9 April 2026 - The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded a visit to Aden, where he met with senior Yemeni government officials to discuss the implications of recent regional and national developments on prospects for peace in Yemen, and priorities for the political, economic and military/security tracks of the UN-led mediation process.

The Special Envoy met with Presidential Leadership Council Member Mahmood Al-Subihi and Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Shaya Zindani. Discussions focused on the regional escalation and its impact on Yemen, as well as on internal developments, including efforts to stabilize the situation in southern governorates. The Envoy also briefed on the status of ongoing negotiations related to conflict-related detainees.

The Government’s economic priorities, including the adoption of the 2026 budget and strategic plan were at the centre of the Envoy’s discussions with Minister of Finance Marwan Bin Ghanem, and Minister of Oil and Minerals Mohammed Bamaqa. The meetings focused on financial stabilization, including revenue and budgetary priorities, as well as advancing the resumption of fuel production and exports to support economic recovery.

The Envoy’s meeting with Minister of State for Women’s Affairs Ahed Jasoos, focused on the importance of inclusive participation, including the meaningful engagement of women in political, and public decision-making processes, as well as the economic empowerment of women and the need to strengthen social and legal protections The Special Envoy also met with Central Bank of Yemen Governor Ahmed Ahmed Ghaleb, with discussions focusing on economic stabilization measures and the broader financial context, including monetary challenges and opportunities for advancing reforms.

In his meeting with Minister of State and Governor of Aden Abdulrahman Sheikh, the Special Envoy discussed local dynamics and ongoing efforts to support stability and service delivery in the governorate.

He also met with members from civil society and media as part of the broader inclusion efforts of the Office.

In all his engagements, the Special Envoy reiterated the importance of shielding Yemen from regional escalations, supporting economic stability, and preserving space for a Yemeni-led political process under UN auspices.

عمّان، 9 نيسان/أبريل 2026 – اختتم المبعوث الأممي الخاص إلى اليمن، هانس غروندبرغ، زيارة إلى عدن، حيث التقى بكبار المسؤولين في الحكومة اليمنية لمناقشة تداعيات التطورات الإقليمية والوطنية الأخيرة على آفاق السلام في اليمن، وأولويات المسارات السياسية والاقتصادية والعسكرية/الأمنية ضمن عملية الوساطة التي تقودها الأمم المتحدة.

والتقى المبعوث الأممي بعضو مجلس القيادة الرئاسي محمود الصبيحي، ورئيس الوزراء ووزير الخارجية شائع الزنداني. تركّزت المناقشات على التصعيد الإقليمي وتأثيره على اليمن، وكذلك على التطورات الداخلية، بما في ذلك الجهود المبذولة لتحقيق الاستقرار في المحافظات الجنوبية. كما استعرض المبعوث آخر مستجدات المفاوضات الجارية بشأن المحتجزين على خلفية النزاع.

UN Special Envoy concludes visit to Riyadh
Amman, 10 April 2026 – The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, travelled from Aden to Riyadh as part of his ongoing engagements to advance a Yemeni-led political process under UN auspices.

The Special Envoy met with the President of the Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad Al-Alimi. They discussed progress on stabilization in Government areas and ways to advance the peace process.

Grundberg also met with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to Yemen, Mohammed Al Jaber. They discussed prospects for the peace process in Yemen, as well as the ongoing negotiations on conflict-related detainees taking place in Amman.

The Special Envoy also met with representatives of the Joint Forces Command.

In addition, the Special Envoy met with ambassadors of the permanent members of the UN Security Council (P5), emphasizing the need for concerted international support for de-escalation and a negotiated settlement.
