The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg met from 10 to 12 February, in Riyadh, with the newly appointed Prime Minister, Shaya Al-Zindani, members of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) and other Yemeni officials, the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed Al-Jaber, as well as representatives of the permanent five members of the United Nations Security Council.

During his meeting with the Prime Minister, the Special Envoy discussed Yemen’s current political, economic, and security landscape. He underscored the importance of building on the formation of the new cabinet to translate this momentum into political progress that would bring tangible benefits to the Yemeni population.

In his broader engagements, the Special Envoy emphasized the need for regional unity and sustained international engagement to support de-escalation and help create an environment conducive to a negotiated political settlement.

The Special Envoy reaffirmed his continued engagement with Yemeni, regional, and international stakeholders to support efforts aimed at reducing tensions and advancing prospects for an inclusive, Yemeni-led political process.

Later today, the Envoy will brief via teleconference the UN Security Council, as part of the monthly Council's sessions on the situation in Yemen.

التقى المبعوث الأممي إلى اليمن، هانس غروندبرغ، في الرياض خلال الفترة من 10 إلى 12 فبراير، برئيس مجلس الوزراء المعيّن حديثاً، شائع الزنداني، وأعضاء مجلس القيادة الرئاسي، وعدد من المسؤولين اليمنيين، إضافة إلى سفير المملكة العربية السعودية لدى اليمن، محمد آل جابر، وممثلين عن الدول الخمس دائمة العضوية في مجلس الأمن التابع للأمم المتحدة.

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, delivered his briefing today to the #UNSecurityCouncil.

✍️ Key points included:

⚪️Current efforts to improve living conditions and support stabilization in government areas are significant. Early positive signs include improvements in electricity provision and payment of public sector salaries, while continued tensions, security incidents, and demonstrations, where in some cases violence and loss of life have been reported, underscore the fragility of the situation.

⚪️Recent attacks targeting media institutions and journalists, particularly in Aden, are of particular concern stressing that freedom of expression is essential for accountability and resolving disputes through politics rather than force.

⚪️New cabinet under Prime Minister Shaya Al-Zindani can protect recent gains by anchoring them in strengthened institutions and economic reforms. Cabinet and the Central Bank must be shielded from politicization.

⚪️He welcomed the appointment of three women ministers, calling for the full, equal and meaningful inclusion of women in decision-making and peace negotiations, noting that inclusive peace delivers more sustainable outcomes.

⚪️The planned Southern dialogue is an opportunity to address long-standing grievances and build consensus on issues important to the southerners and all Yemenis.

⚪️He outlined three reflections on restarting an inclusive political process. First, the need for the parties to adopt a forward-looking and pragmatic approach that reflects today’s realities, builds on what still works, and revises outdated assumptions. Second, the importance of treating political, economic, and security issues as interlocking files to be addressed in tandem. Third, the need for a credible process that delivers on two-time horizons by enabling near-term agreements that reduce suffering, including economic de-escalation, while creating space to negotiate longer-term issues such as governance, security arrangements and the future shape of the state.

⚪️ On conflict-related detainees and with Ramadan approaching, he encouraged the parties to sustain UN-facilitated negotiations in Amman, finalize the list of names, and move swiftly to implementation.

⚪️He called for the immediate and unconditional release of detained UN staff and others, condemned the ongoing arbitrary detentions and trials that fall far short from basic due process, urged restraint to prevent Yemen from being drawn into a regional conflict, and stressed that unity of the Security Council is critical to advancing an inclusive, UN-led political process.

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen visits Moscow

The UN Special Envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, concluded today a visit to Moscow where he met with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, Alexander Sergeevich Alimov, and other officials.
They discussed the latest developments in Yemen and exchanged views on ongoing efforts to return to an inclusive, Yemeni-led political process under UN auspices. The Special Envoy underlined the complexity of the conflict and the challenging regional context, including security in the Red Sea, and noted that the unity of the Security Council, as well as sustained international and regional engagement are key for a viable political track, and to prevent further instability.

The Special Envoy also briefed on ongoing negotiations taking place in Amman under UN auspices on the release of conflict-related detainees, stressing that progress on this issue is critical for alleviating human suffering and supporting broader de-escalation efforts.

He further discussed ongoing UN efforts to secure the unconditional release of the UN personnel and others detained by Ansar Allah and working towards an enabling environment for much needed humanitarian operations, reiterating the importance of support from Security Council members in this regard.

Statement by the Special Envoy for Yemen on recent military escalation

Amman, 5 March 2026 – Special Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg has been actively engaging with Yemeni, regional and international actors, expressing his deep concern about the recent military escalation in the Middle East and underscoring the need to protect Yemen from being dragged into another cycle of regional confrontation.

Grundberg calls for maximum restraint, and warns against any actions that would undermine Yemen’s prospects for peace. After more than a decade of devastating conflict, Yemen cannot afford to once again become an arena for regional escalation. It is not up to one actor to commit an entire country to a broader conflict that exposes Yemenis to more suffering.

There remains a fragile but real opportunity to move forward with a comprehensive political process under UN auspices that ends the conflict and ushers in a just and sustainable peace. Yemen’s future must be shaped by that process, and not by the pull of regional confrontation.

The United Nations remains fully committed to supporting the parties in reaching a political solution to the conflict. Preserving that path requires the parties to put the interests of the Yemeni people above all else.

عمّان، 5 آذار/مارس 2026 – يواصل المبعوث الخاص إلى اليمن، هانس غروندبرغ، الانخراط بشكل نشط مع الأطراف اليمنية والإقليمية والدولية، معرباً عن قلقه العميق إزاء التصعيد العسكري الأخير في منطقة الشرق الأوسط، ومشدداً على أهمية حماية اليمن من الانجرار إلى دورة جديدة من المواجهات الإقليمية.

ويدعو غروندبرغ إلى ممارسة أقصى درجات ضبط النفس، محذراً من أي إجراءات من شأنها تقويض فرص السلام في اليمن. فبعد أكثر من عقد من النزاع المدمر، لا يمكن لليمن أن يتحمل أن يصبح مرة أخرى ساحة لتصعيد إقليمي. وليس من حق أي طرف أن يجر البلاد إلى صراع أوسع يعرّض اليمنيين لمزيد من المعاناة.

Statement by the UN Special Envoy for Yemen on International Women’s Day, 2026

On International Women’s Day, we recognize the determination, leadership, and vision of Yemeni women who contribute to shaping their country’s future despite the immense challenges they are facing amid years of conflict.

This year’s theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For ALL Women and Girls” reminds us that gender equality presupposes that women’s rights are protected, their voices heard, and their contributions reflected in decisions.

Across Yemen, women play vital roles in sustaining their communities and promoting dialogue, keeping societies connected and resilient amid ongoing hardship. Yemeni women are also back in senior government positions reflecting greater representation in national governance.

Ensuring that women can engage fully in public and political life is essential for shaping a better future, building trust, strengthening institutions, and sustaining stability.

It is imperative that protection is duly provided for women human rights defenders and peace activists, ensuring their safety as they work towards a more just society. Justice and accountability addressing violence against women is paramount and must be always upheld.

My Office - and I personally - remain committed to engaging with Yemeni women whose insights and expertise continue to inform our efforts, and their perspectives reflected in discussions on the pursuit of a peaceful, Yemeni-led political process.

On this International Women’s Day, I encourage all stakeholders – women and men - to support an environment where women’s rights are fully respected and exercised, so that they can better contribute to the political, economic, and social life of the country.

‏في اليوم الدولي للمرأة، نُشيد بعزيمة النساء اليمنيات وقيادتهن ورؤيتهن التي تسهم في بناء مستقبل بلدهن، رغم التحديات الجسيمة التي يواجهنها في ظل سنوات من النزاع.

‏ويُذكّرنا شعار هذا العام، “الحقوق. العدالة. العمل. من أجل جميع النساء والفتيات”، بأن تحقيق المساواة بين الجنسين يفترض حماية حقوق النساء، والاستماع إلى أصواتهن، وإدراج إسهاماتهن في القرارات.

‏في جميع أنحاء اليمن، تضطلع النساء بأدوار حيوية في دعم مجتمعاتهن وتعزيز الحوار، والحفاظ على ترابط المجتمع وقدرته على الصمود في ظل الصعوبات المستمرة. كما عادت النساء اليمنيات لتولي مناصب حكومية رفيعة، بما يعكس تمثيلاً أكبر لهن في مؤسسات الحكم الوطنية.

According to initial information, the attack resulted in at least 8 civilians killed and scores injured, including children, who had gathered together for Iftar in the holy month of Ramadan. I extend my sincere condolences to the families and community.

Civilians must be protected at all times, in strict accordance with international humanitarian law. It is imperative that those responsible are held to account."
