In response, the militias are going after American oil companies in the south [https://x.com/markito0171/status/2029984199017480230/video/1]. Locals say US gunships involved. The action preempts #Iran from activating the Iraqi theater. But it was going to blow up anyway, except Tehran's timeline has been disrupted, somewhat.

RT @citrinowicz: A U.S. Withdrawal from Iraq: For Iran it is a strategic victory
From Tehran’s perspective, a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq would represent an extraordinary strategic achievement. Few countries matter more to Iran than Iraq: it shares a long border with the Islamic Republic, has a Shiite-majority population, occupies a critical geographic position at the heart of the Middle East, and is home to powerful armed groups with longstanding ties to Tehran.
Iran would almost certainly seek to exploit a reduced American presence to deepen its political, security, and economic influence in Baghdad and across Iraq. Iranian leaders could also portray the withdrawal as further evidence that sustained pressure on the United States eventually produces an American retreat from the region.
The timing therefore matters. A U.S. drawdown while Washington remains engaged in a broader confrontation with Tehran risks sending a message very different from the one the United States intends. Rather than strengthening deterrence or constraining Iranian influence, Tehran could interpret the withdrawal as confirmation that it can withstand American pressure while continuing to expand its leverage in one of the most strategically important countries in the Middle East.
The controversy surrounding Iraq’s decision to ban flights to Iran only underscores just how deeply entrenched Iranian influence has become inside Iraq. Tehran’s leverage extends far beyond its relationships with armed militias; it is embedded across significant parts of Iraq’s political, economic, and security landscape. Whatever happens to the U.S. military presence, this influence is not going to disappear. Any American strategy toward Iraq must begin with that reality rather than assume that pressure on Iran alone will fundamentally weaken Tehran’s position in Baghdad.
For Washington, the central question is therefore not simply how many American troops remain in Iraq, but what political and security architecture is left behind. Without an effective strategy to strengthen Iraqi state institutions and limit the autonomy of Iran-aligned armed groups, a military withdrawal could create precisely the strategic space Tehran has spent years trying to secure.
