Yesterday we saw a clear effort by the #Houthis to further escalate tensions in the #RedSea. The group carried out four attacks, including three against civilian shipping (one that forced the crew to abandon ship) and another against a US drone.

This could be a response to the re-designation of the Houthi as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist group, but I also think this may stem from Iran's growing reliance on the group as the tip of the spear of the #Gaza response

The spike in Houthi attacks comes as all other avenues of Iranian-tied response carry with them growing risk:
(1) The Hezbollah-Israel dynamic is becoming extremely dangerous - even more than before.
(2) Following the US strikes in response to the death of three US soldiers, attacks against US bases and force in Iraq and Syria have stopped. This probably won't last, but showed the risk associated with these attacks have increase.

EU-led naval mission reports on the rescue of the crew of the MV SOUNION, which was likely hit by #Houthi attacks and lost engine power. The mission also says it destroyed an unmanned surface vessel during the operation.

On August 21, the MV SOUNION, which had not asked for EUNAFVOR ASPIDES 🇪🇺 protection, came under an attack in the South Red Sea area and lost its engine power.

Following a request from the master, the operation dispatched a ship in order to rescue the crew.

While approaching the area, the EUNAVFOR ASPIDES ship destroyed an Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) that posed an imminent threat to the ship and the crew. All on board the MV SOUNION were subsequently rescued and are being transported to Djibouti, the nearest safe port of call.

The lives of seafarers and freedom on the high seas are nonnegotiable values and their protection is a key objective of EUNAVFOR ASPIDES.

Carrying 150.000 tonnes of crude oil, the MV SOUNION now represents a navigational and environmental hazard. It is essential that everyone in the area exercises caution and refrains from any actions that could lead to a deterioration of the current situation.

EUNAVFOR ASPIDES 🇪🇺with a defensive mandate acts as a credible EU maritime security provider, with the aim to contribute to the freedom of navigation in the area of operation and the safe passage of merchant vessels.

RT @mercoglianos: Video released by the #Houthis seems to show the setting of explosive charges on the deck of the tanker #Sounion off the coast of Yemen in the #RedSea.

At 150k tons, this tanker is almost twice the size of Exxon Valdez and the environmental damage to the region will be massive.

RT @mercoglianos: Latest satellite images from @MaxarSpace shows #Sounion with fires spreading and increasing intensity.

You can note that the fire apertures appear to be increasing and now several more of the tanks are involved.

There also appears to be a sheen coming from the engine compartment and some from up forward, indicating that fuel and oil may now be leaking into the #RedSea.

So far no movement for Hercules and Gladiator in the Gulf of Aden. The situation is deteriorating due to #Houthis actions.

1/The latest video release by the #Houthis is just amazing.

This was filmed after the large three explosions set off at night, as indicated by the fires on deck, and the recent photos by @EUNAVFORASPIDES as the bridge is still intact in this video.

RT @EUNAVFORASPIDES: The MV SOUNION, due to the large amount of crude oil it carries, presents a significant environmental threat. Private companies are involved in the salvage operation that is about to start. Upon their request, EUNAVFOR ASPIDES will provide protection to the tug boats, that will deal with the salvage operation and facilitate their efforts to prevent an environmental disaster.

Currently, several fires continue to burn on the vessel’s main deck. The vessel remains anchored without drifting, and there are no visible signs of an oil spill. @eu_eeas #MaritimeSecurity #RedSea #Sounion

RT @mercoglianos: The @EUNAVFORASPIDES has the tanker ##Sounion under tow.

They may be heading to a port in Saudi Arabia.

The salvage team was able to board the vessel and get power to the windlass to hoist the port anchor.

Fires still rage on board but they have remained confined.

Update on the MV SOUNION salvage status

The salvage of the MV SOUNION is a complex operation and consists of various phases.

The tug boats have successfully connected to the vessel and the towing of the MV SOUNION to a safe location is in progress.

By providing protection to this operation, EUNAVFOR ASPIDES contributes to maritime and environmental security.

Good report on the tempo of Houthi strikes against targets in Saudi Arabia and their implications from Martin Kelly of Orbital Risk Intelligence.

This week's Orbital Risk Intelligence Saudi Arabia Weekly Security Report is out, and the headline number tells only half the story.

#Houthi launches against the kingdom fell by about a third on the previous week: at least 30 missiles and drones intercepted, against at least 46 the week before. On the surface, that looks like easing pressure.

It isn't. The Houthis fired at #SaudiArabia every single day, and the ballistic missiles they did launch went at economic targets. One reached Ras Tanura. Satellite imagery shows fire damage at Saudi Arabia's largest refinery, beside one of its main crude export terminals, more than 1,200 km from Yemen. Fewer missiles, more serious damage.

From 30 October the pattern changed again, to one or two missiles a day at most and single drones over several regions. We assess that as deliberate conservation, not lost capability. The Houthis are holding missiles back, and the obvious trigger is a US or Israeli strike on Iran now that the US midterms are here.

That is what makes this week important for anyone with exposure to the kingdom. Saudi exports now face threats on both coasts at once: Houthi missiles at Ras Tanura, Abqaiq and Rabigh, Iranian attacks on shipping spreading into the northern Gulf off Ras Al Khafji, and a continuing threat to Saudi-linked vessels in the Red Sea.

This week's report adds a week-on-week tempo comparison, an escalation and de-escalation outlook, and a carrier-by-carrier list of airline suspensions, with some now running into 2027.
