Which Minerals Are Considered Vital?

The term "vital minerals" is more of a political expression than a scientific one. Different countries, depending on their domestic goals and geopolitical objectives, have compiled various lists of vital minerals.

In 2022, the U.S. Geological Survey published a list of 50 minerals, from aluminum to zirconium, that they consider to be crucial for national security, the economy, renewable energy development, and infrastructure.

What Vital Minerals Does Ukraine Have?

Hanna Lyontseva, the head of the Ukrainian Geological Association, claimed in a 2022 article that Ukraine possesses about 5% of the world's mineral resources, despite covering only 0.4% of the Earth's surface.

According to Ukrainian data, which Reuters referred to, the country holds reserves of 22 of the 34 minerals deemed vital by the European Union, including rare earth elements like lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, erbium, and yttrium.

Before the war with Russia, Ukraine was a key supplier of titanium, providing about 7% of the global production in 2019. Additionally, the country is home to 5,000 tons of lithium reserves and a fifth of the world’s graphite reserves, which are critical for nuclear power plants.

However, with around one-fifth of Ukraine’s territory now under Russian occupation, many of these resources have been lost. According to Ukrainian think tanks, approximately 40% of Ukraine's metal resources are located in Russian-occupied areas. Russian forces control at least two of Ukraine’s lithium mines, one in Donetsk and another in Zaporizhzhia.
